This is going to be a long post but please read.
I always promised I would be a voice for dogs, to protect them and love all.
Just lately I'm hearing more and more shocking stories of dog walkers putting dogs in unnecessary danger.
I'm putting this out there for dog owners and walkers.
This is coming from me as a dog walker/trainer and home boarder with over 30 years experience and knowledge in the animal industry.
To owners, When choosing a dog walker, (not a sales pitch as I am full) it’s vital to consider a few things. Whom ever you entrust your dog to, remember that person or company has a ‘duty of care’ to your dog.
Ask about policies and procedures examples being, ‘if a dog is poorly, if a dog gets hurt, or if a dog runs away’. Ask what plans will be put in place to meet each dogs individual needs on a day to day basis and ensure that person understands your dog.
Does that person/company have experience, passion, knowledge and training?
Ask about insurance, is their vehicle covered to transport your dogs.
Do they know the area well where they will be walking.
Don't be afraid to ask questions as a reputable walker will happily answer and not be defensive.
In my eyes there is no such thing as a daft question where animals are concerned.

As dog walkers, we have a huge responsibility looking after people's family pets.
It's our responsibility to have all the correct paperwork on hand for potential clients to complete.
We need to match dogs correctly for group walks by taking the time to get to know them, otherwise we set them up to fail.
We need to be able to read body language as this can help stop a potential escalation before it happens and much more. Dogs talk with their body.
We need to take responsibility for that dog the minute we enter a clients home to collect, right through to dropping them off. During that time, we have a duty of care to the dog and the public, whatever happens, it is our responsibility not the owners.
We need to make sure we have all dogs under control at all times, whether on or off lead.

Dog walking isn't a case of collecting dogs, walk some, leave some in the van. It's not about making easy money. If you do and think that then you really have got it wrong.

It's about knowing what you are doing, passion, love, care and honesty.
It's about training and educating yourself for years, it's about continuing your personal development and learning everyday.
It's about taking responsibility for our mistakes and owning up to them, learning from them.
