Now the weather is turning wetter, colder and windier we wondered what most dog owners do with regards to walking their dogs.

Our dogs (and us) love routine, so we generally stick to the same time of day to walk. If it’s particularly cold and wet we might put a coat on them, especially if they have been clipped.

Then when we get home it’s a spray down of muddy feet and legs in the garden with a portable shower and a dry off in their Ruff & Tumble drying coats.

This means the dogs aren’t constantly being towel dryed when the wet weather is here which means their coats stay in great condition.

Ageing Dogs

Eventually you'll (hopefully) be asking yourself - how do I look after an ageing dog?

It's funny how you never see your dogs ageing until they can't keep up on a walk or are a bit stiff when they get up from a nap.

Ours are getting on a bit now and one especially - it's really noticeable. To keep them in good shape we do low impact daily exercise and give salmon oil in their food. Additionally they have YuMove in their meals as well as hydrotherapy when they seem a little slower, stiffer or flat in their demeanour. They also have continuous magnetic therapy to help with their circulation.

The combination of all of the above, as well as a good diet, seem to really work for our 2. It's always trial and error - always taking cues from your dog.

I have always been quite fussy with what I feed my dogs. Selecting a good quality dog food with no junk in it.

I found a great dry dog food called Skinners and was very happy with it. It was aimed at working dogs and I loved it as it was full of goodness and specific to my dogs breeds and needs.

One of my dogs is lazy, overweight and only has to look at food to put on weight, the other is a ball of energy and I find it tricky to keep weight on him. The dry food was precarious to balance for both requirements.

I decided to research a raw diet. I did this for about a year, finding out all the facts. When I started feeding raw it took a while to get into it (I’m a vegetarian). It requires effort and time to plan and lots of research to find a food and supplier that I was happy with and that ticked all the boxes that we needed.

Putting my dogs onto a raw diet is the best thing I have done for them. Their coats look amazing, they both love their food and most importantly I can now manage their weight so that they are healthy and happy. They both look amazing on it.

We buy our Natures Menu raw food from a family run local supplier called Hornsea Animal Feeds. Raw really works for us. Appreciate though that it isn’t suitable for everyone.

Grooming

How many people groom their dogs on a regular basis? Either you are doing the grooming yourself or taking your furry child to a trusted dog groomer.

I work with horses so know how beneficial grooming is for your pet, not only to keep them clean and mat free, but it also has lots of other brilliant benefits.

> great for bonding with your pet
> relaxing for both them and you

Most importantly for me though is you get to check your pet from top to toe on a regular basis. You get to know what’s “normal” for them and will pick up on any lumps, bumps, cuts or abnormalities quickly.

I have always groomed my dogs myself; brushing them, cleaning their ears & eyes as well as clipping their claws. As I clip the horses I am used to handling clippers so I have always clipped my dogs myself too. However last year I found a local dog groomer - Laura at Hawkes' Hounds, who is amazing.

I still do the daily groom myself so my furry children and I get all the benefits from daily grooming but my dog groomer now does the clipping for me. Laura is brilliant; my dogs always come home happy and relaxed. This for me is THE most important thing. They of course come back looking and smelling amazing . I have never been happy to leave them with anyone before but never ever worry when they are with Laura.

Dogs and our relationship with them.

I find it fascinating to see people with their dogs, what there relationship is like and how they find their place within the family unit.

I have grown up with dogs, my mum and dad had a dog before I was born. He was a Labrador called Ricky. I actually think that is where my love of dogs came from. Since then I have never been without a dog in my house, not as a child or an adult. I actually couldn’t imagine my home without one.

I call my dogs “the kids” rather “the dogs”. And while I love them like my children I do treat them as dogs, all be it spoilt ones. They are always with me, they follow me everywhere, come to work with me, they literally are always by my side.

They are my therapists, my best friends, my fun, my calm, my happiness. I mean is there actually anything better than having a dog? I think not.

Welcome!!

Louie and Rover is a small family business that came to life during lockdown 2020. The business has been bubbling away in the back of our minds for the last couple of years.

We needed to find the name that meant something to us, the products that we would happily purchase ourselves and everything needed to be right. And now that has all come together, we couldn’t be prouder of our new venture.

We are a husband and wife team with day jobs: Paul: a photographer and Nichola: a horse riding instructor. We have a lovely young daughter and 2 wonderful spaniels. We have always had dogs in our family together as well as growing up as children. We definitely feel that a house is not a home without a faithful friend by your side.

We wanted to build a brand that meant something, with products we were proud to put our name to and a make a family company that we were passionate about, and here it is.

Our dogs are an integral part of our family, and we know yours are too.
