Hello everyone, just to let you know there’s a doggy bug going around. Symptoms include diarrhoea, sickness and fatigue. Local vets are aware of this bug. Plain boiled rice and chicken and slow/quiet walks is the way to go. If when out with your dog they have the runs and you can’t clean it all up PLEASE go back and wash it away, this will help stop the spread amongst dogs. And let people know so they can keep their dog back from yours. Fingers crossed this bug doesn’t last long!

Hi everyone, I’d like to share some valuable information with you. It could save your dogs life! I was recently told about a dog which had been bitten by an Adder. The owner called ahead to her vets to prepare them for his arrival but due to road works it would take longer than normal to get there. The vet asked the owner if she had any antihistamines on her, thankfully she did! The vet said to give him 1 4mg tablet. The antihistamine (Piriton) allowed her the extra time to get her dog to the vets and receive the anti-venom treatment needed to save his life.

1/2 a 4mg tablet for dogs under 10kg
1 x 4mg tablet for dogs over 10kg
Giant breeds 2 x 4mg tablets

***Please note this is not the 10mg once a day tablets!***

So as part of your doggy first aid box make sure you have antihistamine tablets! This is just an aid to give you more time to get help for your dog, this doesn’t fix the problem!

When out walking keep some antihistamines on you…

*Parvovirus Alert*

Cases of Canine Parvovirus have been confirmed by several veterinary practices across South Cumbria and North Lancashire.

Parvovirus is a horrible, high contagious, viral disease causing severe vomiting and diarrhoea which can be fatal.

All of the cases we have confirmed have been in dogs under 12 months old. They have had different brands of vaccination courses, so we suspect it is not related to a particular vaccine breakdown.

The reason we think we are seeing this is due to two factors:
-The level of virus in the environment is much increasing due to an influx of puppies from all over the country and abroad.
-The effect of MDA (maternally derived antibodies) on a puppies immune response:
When a puppy sucks the first milk (colostrum) from its mother it gets some temporary antibodies which protects it from disease for the first few weeks of life. Unfortunately the level of these antibodies also can affect how well the puppy responds to its first vaccinations. The vaccine manufacturer advises us that there is sufficient level of cover for most puppies when we give the pup its second vaccination at 10 weeks old, which is what we have been advising for many years. A small proportion of puppies will not be sufficiently protected due to high levels of maternally derived antibodies (MDA) from the mothers milk affecting the immune response. In past years, when the level of the virus in the environment was low, these puppies didn’t come across the virus and were then fully protected at their first year booster (when their mothers antibodies had long worn off) but now there is a lot more virus circulating these poor dogs are catching the disease.

We are advising all puppies that have not had their first year booster yet either bring the booster forward (if they are due it in the next 2-3 months) or have a parvo top up vaccination if they are 16 weeks old or older.

If your dog is an ADULT and is up to date with their vaccinations then having a Parvo top up is not going to make any difference to their immune system so a Parvo top up is not recommended.
If your dog is NOT up to date with their vaccinations then we recommend restarting the course ASAP.

For our HEALTHCARE PLAN MEMBERS we are offering a FREE Parvo top up if they are under 12 months old.

For new pups coming to us for their vaccination course we will be recommending a third Parvo vaccination at 16 weeks old for a discounted price of £20, this will also be available for an adult dogs under 12 months old not on the healthcare plan.

Hello everyone, I hope you’re surviving lockdown 3?! I’d like to introduce you to an Italian Spinone puppy in need of some help. Say hello to Frankie...

Poor Frankie hasn’t had it easy so far in life, and he’s only 6 months old! After having x-rays and being referred for a second opinion to a Orthopaedic Specialist Surgeon Frankie has unfortunately been diagnosed with Osteo Dystrophy of the right shoulder as well as Proximal Humeral Dystrophy of the right leg, on top of all this his leg is a cm or so shorter.
So what does this mean for Frankie..A long road ahead !
The plan for Frankie now is to build up his muscle as much as possible before any surgery. He’s having hydrotherapy 3 times a week, seeing a physio every two weeks and he’s got a set of exercises to do at home 2-3 times a day. Ideally surgery would be best when he’s fully grown but it all depends on how thing develop, the longer surgery can be put back the better.
As you can imagine this isn’t going to be cheap, in order to get Frankie back on his feet the surgery is going to cost somewhere in the region of £10k+
If you can spare anything to help Frankie with his surgery his family would be truly grateful. Sharing this post would also be a massive help.
