At this time of year, I always hear the same question… “How can I help my dog stay calm with all the chaos of Christmas”there is loads going on at this time! Guests coming over, kids running around, and constant doorbells.

Find out what motivates your dog and use that to reinforce the behaviours you would like 😊 So often we hear ‘But my dog doesn’t like treats?’ Or ‘All they want to do is sniff every step of the walk’. So why don’t we use sniffing as a reward for walking nicely on the lead or playtime as a reward for recalling back to you? It doesn’t always have to be a food reward 🤩 Finding out what your dog enjoys and using it as a reward can help make them become more motivated and also makes training much easier and so much more fun for both of you 🐶 Here’s Hughie using the hose as a reward for Koda after he’s sent him round the different objects in the garden 😆 Koda is highly motivated by water (it’s his favourite thing in the world!) 🤩🐶❤️

Can you guarantee that your dog will recall mid chase? Whether that’s wildlife or another dog 🐶 And yes it can be achieved without the use of any fancy equipment and without using any harsh methods! Teaching your dog a solid emergency stop and recall are so important if you are allowing your dog off lead especially in places where there is a high amount of wildlife where the chances of them taking off in pursuit are likely! If they are to take chase and you are unable to get them back then their safety becomes a risk (and the risk is just not worth it so please ensure they are kept on a long lead until you are sure this will not be the case 😊) Mr Hare was able to safely hop away after being spotted and Trixie taking chase 🐇❤️
