Meet Taylor! I recently met Taylor and have been treating her for some muscular discomfort likely relating to a previous injury when she was younger. Maintenance massage and laser treatment are a great idea to help keep dogs active into their teenage years (believe it or not Taylor just turned 12!). I may be slightly biased as she is a pug cross but this girl is really adorable and has a sweet nature to match- just look at that little face! πŸ₯°

Wow- time flies! This month marked a year since Bailey's knee surgery (11th Jan to be precise). As you can see there's no stopping this girl! Bailey enjoys life to the full with a little help from regular pain relief medication and some massage and laser therapy as needed to keep her comfortable. Bailey is a great example of how the right combination of careful management, meds and complementary therapies can mean dogs with arthritis can have great quality of life (and still act half their age!!). Go Bailey!!😍

Meet Dotty, this sweet girl sadly suffered an acute spinal episode early this year causing compromised nerve function to her right hind leg. Dotty showed signs of her right hind leg being unable to take her full weight and the foot knuckling under as her sensation and control of the leg was compromised. This can happen for a number of reasons and it is crucial if you notice any signs like these in your dog (or cat) to seek veterinary care without delay.
Having done just this Dotty was diagnosed with a suspected FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism)- this is where a fragment of fibrocartilage, associated with the intervertebral discs in the spine, breaks off and causes obstruction to the local blood supply, which in turn compromises nerve health and function. The causes of FCE are not fully understood but it is thought that minor trauma such as (overexertion, jumping, twisting etc) is often a factor. This can happen to any breed and age of dog. Prognosis for recovery is often good. Intensive physiotherapy and laser therapy as soon as possible are both recommended to improve return to function by reducing swelling and inflammation, promoting nerve healing and re-learning an appropriate gait pattern. With lots of hard work from her owners Dotty has made amazing progress in a short space of time and has now been signed off to gradually return to her normal, active lifestyle!

Looking forward to getting him up and running again soon 🐾

Sass- tick βœ…
Trying to kill me with clouds of fluff shedding- tick βœ…

Meet Willow, who has joined me recently for some massage and laser therapy to help with her mobility and comfort levels. Willow is a senior girl and has suspected arthritis and has developed some weakness in her back legs in recent months.

Arthritis and pain in general is very under-recognised in our small furry pets but luckily Willow's owners are very experienced and recognised the signs and sought treatment from their vet and then from me.

Willow has been super to work with and is very tolerant and seems to enjoy her treatment. After 3 sessions I can feel some improvement in her muscular and joint comfort and we can now work on some strength and stability exercises to help support her further🐰

Alongside laser therapy and land based physiotherapy at home another important part of Silky's rehab after her op is hydrotherapy. This allows for controlled exercise and gait adjustment with the benefit of the warmth, buoyancy and resistance of water (think aqua-aerobics!). Charlotte and Katherine at DogFish-Hydrotherapy have looked after my dogs for years so I know Silky is in the best hands for her water treadmill sessions. Shout out to -Cheese for making the perfect product to motivate pugs!! πŸ§€πŸΆ

Lovely Buster, who belongs to my colleague Canine Myotherapy by Tracey enjoying some laser therapy! Buster had a flare up of his arthritis recently so needed a little extra help to get comfortable again. Laser is such a useful tool for giving rapid pain relief and reducing inflammation- side effect free and drug free- compatible with other therapies- cuddles included! πŸ˜‰

Silky's story cont'd: after consulting with the orthopaedic team at the Royal Vet College we decided to go ahead with surgery for Silky- to remove the fractured part of the hip (essentially the ball of the 'ball and socket') and to create a clean cut at the top of the femur.
This surgery is called a 'femoral head and neck excision', or 'FHNE'. After removal of the broken bone segment rehabilitation is really important as essentially there is no longer a hip joint- we rely on scar tissue to create a false joint and so rehab is crucial to:
* ensure early use of the leg
* ensure muscles remain supple and do not shorten- restricting ability of the leg to move through it's full range of movement
* encourage healthy scar tissue to form
* reduce pain and prevent secondary issues developing

We concentrated on manual therapy such as massage and stretching, controlled exercises and lots of laser therapy to promote healing and reduce pain 😊

So some of you will be aware that one of my puggies had surgery recently- I haven't had time to post about it but now that things have calmed down a bit I thought it would be good to share her story!
Silky (Silky Nutmeg Ganache to use her full name) came to me just over a year ago after her previous owner sadly passed away. Silky has always had a bit of a hop to her back legs but appeared in no pain and so I decided to monitor her and focus on getting her down to a healthy weight before we investigated further.
So a year on and down from a very chunky 10.5kg to a slim 6.1kg (!) here is what we found when we took some Xrays at Henlow Vets !! Yes, that is a (very) old fracture to the top of her thigh bone, right where the hip joint starts- yikes...not what we were expecting!!
Next step was off to the specialist vets at the Royal Vet College to make a plan on surgery- as this was a very old fracture we decided a specialist referral was best as any surgery was likely to be complicated by lots of old scar tissue.
To be continued...(spoiler alert- she's OK)

Oh Louie! Who can resist that cheeky face πŸ₯°
I started seeing Louie in mid April after he had spinal surgery with Dick White Referrals
When I first met Louie he was unable to stand and had very limited use all four limbs due to loss of nerve function- this was a really scary time for Louie and his owners!
However, with lots of intensive laser therapy, massage and exercises (and loads of hard work from his lovely owners) I am so pleased to report Louie has made amazing progress and is getting stronger every week! In fact it's now hard to slow him down!! Go Louie!
With thanks to his GP vet North Weald Vets for the referral 🫢

Meet Millie, this gorgeous girl is such a sweetheart and seems to enjoy her treatments once she stops searching for where I've hidden the treats! Millie is recovering from a spinal disc issue and laser therapy is really useful for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Millie also has massage to support her recovery and help to keep her comfortable πŸ–€πŸ€
