How It All Began

Four years ago I decided to rescue a dog to rescue me. After having dogs and cats in my childhood, I decided it was time to get one. I like bull breeds and saw Alisa (my current dog), a cross between Staffordshire Terrier and Japanese Akita at my local Blue Cross animal shelter. She had been run over by a car at three months old and spent her puppy hood recovering from numerous complex surgeries within the kennel environment, at home and not socialising with other dogs. By the time she jumped to her full health she was over one year old. She was a highly energetic bundle of joy, unsuitable to socialise with other dogs and had developed a number of behavioural issues. These behavioural issues included ragging on the lead whilst spinning me round in circles, launching herself from sofa to sofa, mouthing and biting. Well the list goes on. I was given the heads up from the Animal shelter staff and also assistance with training. Nothing could stop me from getting this dog. I fell in love with her and there was nothing I could not do with a little bit of training. My boyfriend called her "the devil dog", with the cutest of faces. Little did I know what was coming my way. She also developed phobias of noises (cars, motorbikes, shooting), she was scared of approaching and going past road furniture and the biggest problem of all - going for other dogs. She would refuse to walk all together, just lay down on the ground refusing to move. Dragging a 25 kg dog on the ground or carrying her was not happening. Thankfully, we were saved by our dog trainer Joe. His reward tactics proved to be working a treat. But I noticed that she was not responding to shop bought treats as well as when I baked her a liver cake. She would get bored, distracted with other things going on around us and going back to be a mare. After all she was still exploring the world. With her muscular build and determination to do as she likes, chasing everything that moved, she was not very easy to manage. After doing some research I realised that shop bought treats are also full of salt and sugar, artificial colours and preservatives, making my dog hyperactive and putting on weight - last thing I needed! With my own baked treats, she was different. Her concentration improved, I could distract her from ragging, stalking other dogs and running circles around me. They helped me manage her excitement and aggression towards other dogs, and we managed to walk passed road signs. She would do what I asked in no time, just to get that treat. So I did some research into health and weight benefits and started baking some other treats. She developed arthritis at a very young age and I have to maintain her healthy body weight to ease pressure off her joints.

Don't get me wrong, my treats don't work miracles, but they played a huge part in managing my dog. She is not perfect, she still has the odd tantrum, is not dog friendly, but we can now cope with most situations. It's been a journey for both of us and is not over yet. Every year is different with Alisa, with new behavioural issues testing us. When Alisa sees a big red air balloon in the sky, no treat can rescue me from getting home, lets say, very quickly.

I have now been baking for a few years and my treats have helped other owners with their dog training issues. I work full time and bake on my rest days, so if you decide to try my treats I will be in touch regarding delivery, as you may have to wait a few days until such time when I bake full time, of course. For your patience I am grateful.
