Let’s talk about responsible breeding 🐶 🦴

Broadleys Veterinary Hospital take pride in the quality of services we offer to clients wishing to breed their dog responsibly. ⭐️

We have a dedicated Registered Veterinary Nurse, Ruth, who performs hip and elbow scoring to a high standard, following the British Veterinary Assosciation (BVA) protocols. 🩻

Ruth has taken her own experience from breeding labradors and her skills as an RVN to also develop a ‘ Breeders Education Clinic’ for clients to attend. This clinic aims to help educate owners to make correct, and responsible decisions for them, but most importantly for their dog. 👩🏻‍⚕️

The BVA have a free webinar that airs tonight at 7pm which aims to help owners and breeders to fully understand the causes and impacts of Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, and the importance of making informed breeding decisions that will benefit future generations of dogs to come. 🐾

Please see the link below if you would like to watch this free webinar;

☀️ When is it too hot to walk your pet? ☀️

As we approach a heatwave this weekend, we warn owners to make sure to take precautions in this hot weather to prevent there pet developing heat stroke! 🥵 🐾

Your pet can be as risk of developing heat stroke at temperatures above 20 degrees. Some breeds are more susceptible such as brachycephalic, flat faced animals, and animals that have a heavy coat as they may find it more difficult to regulate their own temperature. 🐶

We strongly recommmend all owners to avoid walking their dog during the day when the sun is at it’s strongest, and to instead walk first thing in the morning and last thing at night when it is cooler. 🌅🌃

Signs of heat stoke are:
🐾 Panting
🐾Restlessness and agitation
🐾Lethargy and weakness
🐾Excessive drooling
🐾Red gums and tongue
🐾Red, hot ears
🐾Vomiting and Diarrhoea

This can quickly lead to collapse or even seizures if the animal cannot regulate their temperature quickly. ‼️

Please seek advise from a vet immediately if you pet experiences any of these clinical signs. 🏥

We hope you have a safe weekend in the sun! Here are some photos below of pets enjoying the sun safely! ☀️

Not all heroes wear capes, some donate blood instead!! 🐾🩸

Everyone meet Teddy! 🐶

Teddy was extremely brave and donated his blood to help another patient that required a blood transfusion in the hospital. 🏥

We called upon Teddy as he met all of the blood donation criteria; vaccinated, under 8 years old, healthy, over 25kg and he has a wonderful temperament! ⭐️

There are eight different dog blood types but for blood transfusions we categorise this into two MAIN types: DEA positive and DEA negative. Teddy tested DEA negative - which is a safe ‘universal’ blood type to give to majority of dogs who are receiving their first blood transfusion, without typing the recipient. 🩸

Teddy will forever be a hero! 🦸 🐾 👏

✨ CAT FOUND- CLACKMANNAAN- Marr Terrace✨

Please share 📲

We have had a long-haired tabby entire male cat kindly handed in by a member of the public.

We suspect that the cat is quite young. He seems to be in good health and is very friendly so hopefully there is someone out there looking for him! 🐾

Sadly he does not have a microchip.

*Proof of ownership will be required*

Hedgehog Advice 🦔

When to rescue and when to leave alone! ✅ ❌

To Rescue;

🦔 ✅ If you see a hedgehog out during the day. Hedgehogs are nocturnal which means they sleep during the day 💤 and forage for food at night. 🕒

🦔✅ If the hedgehog appears injured. Hedgehogs may have wounds, lameness or sometimes can be found caught up in wire or netting which may require treatment. 🏥

🦔✅ A young hedgehog in distress. Baby and young hedgehogs live with their mum and siblings in a nest. If alone and in distress a baby hedgehog may make a loud, shrill noise. 💥

🦔✅ Underweight before hibernation. A hedgehog under 500g may struggle to survive winter. If you come across an underweight hedgehog they may need housed indoors and monitored closely by a rescue. 🥕🐣

🦔✅ If the hedgehog has a high parasite burden such as mites, ticks, and maggots it may require further treatment. Please always wear gloves when handling a hedgehog as they can often carry ringworm which can be contagious to humans. 🦟🪱🧤

When NOT to rescue;

🦔 ❌ A hedgehog in its nest. Please do not disturb a nesting hedgehog. 🪹

🦔 ❌ Do not feed a hedgehog milk/lactose based products. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and may become ill if fed these products. 🥛

🦔 ❌ If you accidentally disturb a hedgehog nest and there’s no sign of the mother, there’s no need to assume the hoglets have been abandoned. It’s normal for her to leave her babies alone whilst she rests or finds food. Cover the nest again and monitor from a distance to see if the mother reappears.

🦔 ❌ If the hedgehog appears well and meeting weight of over 600g in winter. As long as it isn’t out in daylight or ‘sun bathing’ on your lawn, leave it alone and it will hibernate once it is ready. ☀️

If you are worried about a hedgehog and need advice please contact your local vets or wildlife rescue centre.

One of our wonderful vets, Angela, has recently completed additional training to become a Canine Arthritis Management Veterinary Practitioner. 🎖️🧑🏼‍⚕️

Angela has a keen interest in chronic pain, in particular long term management of arthritic patients and helping owners to navigate the condition. She offers acupuncture for pain management and will be providing arthritis clinics soon. 🐾

This certification allows a veterinary professional to provide a multi-modal approach to canine and feline osteoarthritis and help formulate an individualised approach to manage the condition. 🦴 ❤️‍🩹

👏 Well done Angela 👏

🐾 IMPORTANT UPDATE 🐾

⚠️Transition from Leptospirosis 2 canine vaccination to Leptospirosis 4 from June 1st 2025 ⚠️

💉 Let’s talk about vaccinations!

Earlier this year, the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) Vaccination Guidelines were updated, and UK vets are now advised to use the Lepto 4 vaccine for dogs instead of the previous vaccine, Lepto 2.

What does this mean for you and your dog?

In simple terms, Lepto 4 provides broader coverage against more strains of leptospirosis.

💉 Lepto 2 vaccines are now being discontinued

💉 Any dogs that are currently vaccinated with Lepto 2 will need to restart with Lepto 4 when they are next due their vaccination

💉Two injections, exactly 4 weeks apart

💉 Your annual booster will be charged as normal, there will be no additional cost for the 2nd injection

💉Once you have restarted Lepto 4 it will go back to a single injection per year onwards.

For more information and to ensure your dog is fully protected, please see our FAQ’s on our website linked below.

We have had a large black unneutered male cat brought in to us this morning, sadly deceased upon arrival.

He was found at the side of the A907 road, near the roundabout. He is not microchipped. If you think he may be your cat, please call the team on 01786 445665

💙 Charley 💙

The lovely Charley was in this week to treat his lower lingually displaced canines. 🦷

This condition is often spotted at puppy checks or between 6-8 months of age as the permanent (adult) teeth erupt. 🐶

The deciduous teeth can often occlude into the roof of the mouth causing discomfort, and possibly, oral nasal fistulae.

The treatment for this condition is to remove the deciduous lower canines as soon as possible.

This was spotted quickly by our vet Rachel and was treated to prevent discomfort and ensure that Charley’s adult teeth grow in the correct position. 🐾

Charley recovered well from his procedure and was sent home the same day with some pain relief. 💊
