🐾 Pain Awareness Month 🐾

Pets can’t tell us when they hurt — but their bodies can. 🐶🐱 At Broadleys Veterinary Hospital, we use pain scoring systems to carefully observe posture, movement, facial expressions, and responses to handling. This helps us measure pain levels and tailor the right treatment plan.

Our highly-trained staff pain score animals after surgical procedures, or if they are in for medical management to make sure they are able to make a pain-free recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Every pet deserves to live pain-free.

Not sure if your pet may be in pain? Book a wellness exam with one of our vet’s and let us help!

👁️ BVA Eye Testing Clinic 👁️
SUNDAY 2nd NOVEMBER 2025, from 10am.

Broadleys Veterinary Hospital is pleased to announce that we will be providing the BVA Eye Testing Clinic for a seventh year. 🏥

The BVA Canine Health Scheme, International Sheepdog Society and the Kennel Club operate an eye screening program that helps to identify evidence of hereditary, and non-hereditary eye disease in certain dog breeds. The results can be used to make decisions about breeding with your dog. 🐾

Ben Blacklock - BVSc (Hons), DipECVO MRCVS EBVS is an RCVS and EBVS recognised specialist in veterinary opthalmology. Ben is a senior lecturer, and head of veterinary opthalmology at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. 👨‍⚕️

Ben will be running an eye testing clinic with one of our senior nurses, Ruth, on Sunday 2nd November 2025, from 10am. 🕙

The cost for the eye clinic is is £65* for one dog and then £60 each for any additional dogs you may have.

If this clinic is something you would be interested in attending with your dog(s), please contact the reception team on 01786 445665 to secure your place. ☎️

Ben is also happy to perform Gonioscopy / Glaucoma testing, which may be relevant to your breed of dog. These spaces are very limited, so please let our reception team know when booking if you would also like this test.
The cost for this test is £65. If you would like both tests done the cost would be £60 on top of the routine test.

*Due to this Specialist clinic taking place on a Sunday, outwith our regular practice hours, we would ask that payment is made in cash.

🐾Pain Awareness Month 🐾

🐰 Understanding Pain Scoring in Rabbits 🩺

At Broadleys we want to make sure every patient is comfortable and pain-free during their stay in hospital- this extends to small furries! 🐰

Rabbits are prey animals, which means they instinctively hide signs of pain or illness—making pain detection challenging, but not impossible.

Veterinary professionals use validated pain scoring systems to assess and monitor discomfort in rabbits. One commonly used tool is the “Rabbit Grimace Scale (RbtGS).”

🔍 What is the Rabbit Grimace Scale?

The Rabbit Grimace Scale evaluates facial expressions to detect pain. It focuses on five facial action units (FAUs):
1. Orbital tightening (squinting eyes)
2. Cheek flattening
3. Nostril shape change
4. Whisker position (downward/forward)
5. Ear position (drooping or pulled back)

Each FAU is scored:
• 0 = Not present
• 1 = Moderately present
• 2 = Obviously present

The scores are added up to determine the overall pain level.

Why Pain Scoring Matters 🏥

• Pain delays healing
• Subtle signs of pain in rabbits include:
• Reduced appetite
• Lethargy
• Tooth grinding
• Hiding
• Changes in posture or grooming

Accurate pain scoring = better care and faster recovery! ❤️‍🩹

🐾 September is Pain Awareness Month – Recognizing Pain in Animals 🐾

Animals experience pain just as humans do—but they often express it in subtle ways. As caregivers, pet owners, and veterinary professionals, it is our responsibility to recognize the signs and ensure they receive proper care.

Throughout the month of September, we will encourage a greater understanding and vigilance when it comes to animal pain management. Whether acute or chronic, untreated pain can significantly affect an animal’s quality of life and overall health.

🩺 Common indicators of pain in animals may include:
❤️‍🩹Changes in mobility or posture
❤️‍🩹Decreased appetite or activity
❤️‍🩹Uncharacteristic aggression or withdrawal
❤️‍🩹Vocalizations such as whining or growling
❤️‍🩹Excessive grooming or licking of a specific area

Early identification and treatment are key to improving outcomes. If you suspect your pet or an animal in your care may be in pain, consult a vet so this can be investigated promptly.

Let’s use this month to promote awareness, encourage regular health assessments, and advocate for compassionate, evidence-based pain management for all animals.

✨ CAT FOUND- CUMBERNAULD area✨

We have had a short -haired black female cat kindly handed in by a member of the public after they thought she may have been involved in a RTA.

We suspect that the cat is quite young.
She seems to be in good health, with just a few broken teeth and is very friendly! Hopefully there is someone out there looking for her! 🐾

Sadly she does not have a microchip.

She was found in Cumbernauld, but has been handed in to our Stirling hospital so please share far and wide to try and get her reunited with her owner.

🐾 Today is…NATIONAL DOG DAY! 🐾

National dog day is held on the 26th of August every year and helps celebrate the bond between dogs and humans, whilst also spotlighting the many dogs in rescue centres that are still in need of a home. 🏘️

Dogs do so much for us all - they offer companionship, help to reduce stress, assist people with disabilities, help to detect health issues, and also serve in many important industries such as the army and police! 🚔🏥🐾

The day also calls attention to the many dogs that are still waiting to be rescued/rehomed all over the country. National dog day helps to educate people about responsible dog ownership, and promotes adoption where possible. 🦮🐕‍🦺🐩

We would like to hear any stories if you have adopted/rescued a dog! 🐶

UPDATE 29/8 CROCKET HAS BEEN FOUND

⚠️⚠️ MISSING AND URGENT! - Dunmar Drive area of Alloa ⚠️⚠️

Crocket has been missing from his home since around 8:45pm last night (Monday). He is a house cat and has never gone out before. He is 17 years old and almost blind. He is also DIABETIC and will require treatment urgently if his blood sugar falls.

He may show symptoms of being unwell if he has not eaten, such as lethargy, confusion, unsteadiness, etc. He is usually scared of people so may not come if called, but his owner is hoping someone may have seen him in the surrounding area. He is unfortunately not microchipped, due to being a house cat.

If you see him, or think you may have seen him, please call his owner Graeme Johnson on 07961 095784

We would appreciate as many shares of this post as possible, due to his medical issues. Thank you in advance

🐾 Meet the team Monday 🐾

Introducing…Nikki Forsyth SVN (2nd year nursing student).

Nikki is one of our 6 lovely vet nurse students that we currently have in practice.

She began her time at Broadleys as an animal care assistant (ACA) and after two years applied to do her nursing training.

Her favourite roles with the nursing rotation are consults and working in the wards. “My favourite thing is being able to nurse animals back to health and seeing them get better. ”

In her spare time Nikki loves the outdoors-hillwalking, paddleboarding and exploring Scottish islands with her wee dog.

Nikki has a gorgeous 2yo cocker spaniel named Belle who was recently a patient at Broadleys! She discovered the hard way that Belle is allergic to bee stings and had a close call when she went into anaphylactic shock and required emergency treatment at the hospital. We are happy to repost that Belle is on the mend now and ready for more adventures! ☺️
