It's almost Hogmanay and there will be a lot of celebrations and firework displays around.
It doesn't have to be a lavish firework display like the one pictured, even small private displays can be very upsetting for your pets.

Here are some tips which may help them during this very stressful time.
• Make sure your pets microchip details are up to date in case they do run away or manage to escape.
• Provide a den or hiding place for your pets.
• Use a diffuser - Adaptil for dogs or Feliway for cats - as close to the den or hiding place as possible, or where your pets spend most of their time.
• Keep dogs and cats inside during fireworks and check that their microchip is up to date.
• Walk dogs early in the evening before fireworks start.
• Ensure windows, doors and cat flaps stay closed during the firework season to both prevent pets escaping and reduce the noise.
• Ensure your cats have access to enough litter trays during the firework season, especially if you’re keeping them inside.
• Provide distractions in the form of new toys and chews. Draw curtains and put the TV or music on to mask any noise.
• Stay calm yourself, keeping tone, mood and behaviour as normal as possible. If you are anxious or comfort your pet more than normal, they may find it unsettling.
• If they prefer to go away and hide, let them. Don’t try to pick them up or coax them out or comfort them. This is how they cope.
• Do not punish your pets! This will only make them more distressed.
• Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off.

Don’t forget the small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs!
• Move hutches into a car-free garage or shed on the nights with firework displays. If you don’t have a garage or shed, move the hutches indoors for the night, keeping them away from noisy areas such as tv’s etc.
• Cover the hutches with a thick blanket to make them ore sound proofed.
• Move smaller pets, such as hamsters and gerbils, cages away from any windows and doors and partly cover with a blanket or towel.
• Give them extra bedding – this helps keep the noise out and provides a hiding place.

If you need any help or advice for your pets during the fireworks, please let us know.

Here's something a bit off the festive topic but you may find this interesting.

One of our clients brought their cat into see us with these symptoms -

Lip smacking, drooling, crying out loud and not eating,
The cat was also losing weight and was just miserable.

We knew that these were signs of discomfort in a pets mouth so we decided the best course of action would be to take a look under anaesthetic.

We found this!!!

The X-rays are spectacular and show tooth resorption. This is an all too common and painful condition in cats.

After his surgery he was much happier and gained almost a kilogram in weight!

Surgery was performed by our advanced practitioner in dentistry, Rory.

All the visitors and noise over the festive period can be stressful for your dogs and cats.

Make an easily accessible den for your dog and provide plenty of hiding places for you cats - this will help to comfort and relax your pet when it needs a break.

This cute wee dram is Whisky!

Whisky is a Dachshund puppy with a big personality who came in to visit us with a bad case of vomiting. We performed blood tests, X-rays and gut biopsies to try and identify the cause of his vomiting. The biopsies showed that he had severe inflammation throughout his gastrointestinal tract. Despite everything he has been through, he has remained cheerful and is healing well from his biopsies.

We are so glad he is doing better since we started treating his gut inflammation and, although he became a firm favourite with the team, we are happy he is back home for Christmas!
