It's almost Hogmanay and there will be a lot of celebrations and firework displays around.
It doesn't have to be a lavish firework display like the one pictured, even small private displays can be very upsetting for your pets.
Here are some tips which may help them during this very stressful time.
• Make sure your pets microchip details are up to date in case they do run away or manage to escape.
• Provide a den or hiding place for your pets.
• Use a diffuser - Adaptil for dogs or Feliway for cats - as close to the den or hiding place as possible, or where your pets spend most of their time.
• Keep dogs and cats inside during fireworks and check that their microchip is up to date.
• Walk dogs early in the evening before fireworks start.
• Ensure windows, doors and cat flaps stay closed during the firework season to both prevent pets escaping and reduce the noise.
• Ensure your cats have access to enough litter trays during the firework season, especially if you’re keeping them inside.
• Provide distractions in the form of new toys and chews. Draw curtains and put the TV or music on to mask any noise.
• Stay calm yourself, keeping tone, mood and behaviour as normal as possible. If you are anxious or comfort your pet more than normal, they may find it unsettling.
• If they prefer to go away and hide, let them. Don’t try to pick them up or coax them out or comfort them. This is how they cope.
• Do not punish your pets! This will only make them more distressed.
• Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off.
Don’t forget the small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs!
• Move hutches into a car-free garage or shed on the nights with firework displays. If you don’t have a garage or shed, move the hutches indoors for the night, keeping them away from noisy areas such as tv’s etc.
• Cover the hutches with a thick blanket to make them ore sound proofed.
• Move smaller pets, such as hamsters and gerbils, cages away from any windows and doors and partly cover with a blanket or towel.
• Give them extra bedding – this helps keep the noise out and provides a hiding place.
