Its National Chocolate Day - a great for us humans with a sweet tooth, but not so good for your pets.
Enjoy your chocolate, but please keep the chocolates out of reach as they can be highly toxic for your cats and dogs.
Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, similar to caffeine, which is poisonous to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains.
The effect and signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs also depends on the amount eaten and the size of the breed.
What are the main signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs?
1. Vomit
2. Suffer diarrhoea
3. Display restlessness and hyperactivity
4. Have rapid breathing
5. Muscle tension, incoordination
6. Increased heart rate
7. Suffer seizures
Please note symptoms typically occur between four and 24 hours after your dog has eaten chocolate, though assessment and treatment may be required immediately.
If you think your dog has ingested any chocolate, please call us right away on 01786 815560.
