It can be tricky when trying to help a rescue if their history is unknown and we can’t understand the root cause of their behaviour - you’re flying blind. Though his trust might have been broken before, I’m so pleased that Ole hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for learning along the way, and he has a forever home where he can be his best self. 💗🐾

I was fortunate enough to take part in Craig Ogilvie’s Interactive Play Instructors Course over at Off Leash yesterday. Very interesting to see how play, and finite differences in play styles, can positively impact behaviour. Can’t wait to start implementing these ideas into my coaching. 🐾

Lovely update from Russell’s owners today. Here he is chillin’ on his holibobs, which doesn’t sound like much, but with children running all around the camp site this is actually quite a task for our little Russell and many other dogs that come to us for help. He’s smashing it! Their hard work is really starting to show 🌟🐾

Owners of fearful dogs, or dogs lacking in confidence, my heart goes out to you. Truly. It’s so hard to watch a dog struggling and not be able to explain “Hey, you’re gonna be fine. No harm will come to you, I promise” And even if we could, is that really a promise we can even keep? You can never predict what the world will throw at you. It takes such patience, the ability to understand your dog on a much deeper level, patience, knowing when to pick your battles, did I mention patience?

Hats off to both my lovely clients here, you’re all kinds of awesome! 💗🐾

Socialisation isn’t about exposing your dog to every signal dog breed, age and size, or every electrical appliance ever invented, or even every “uniquely dressed” individual you might pass on the street. It’s impossible to expose your puppy to every possible object, environment or scenario they may come across in their adult years. I mean literally impossible. In fact, attempting to do so could potentially cause more harm than good.

Socialisation is about exposing your dog to small, manageable amounts of stress, and teaching them how to cope with, and recover from, that stress. Knowing your dogs limits so you can step in if it’s too much and striving to make each novel experience a positive one.

When Barkley was a puppy, would it have occurred to me that one day I would take him across a lake on a paddle boat shaped like a giant swan 🦢, surrounded by dozens of (extremely bold!) geese? No. No, I think it’s safe to say, I would not. “Goose crowded swan boat” definitely hasn’t shown up on any socialisation tick list I’ve ever seen! 😂 But he was able to cope with this very novel experience because of how I socialised him as a puppy, an adolescent, and continue to do through his adult years. He knew I had his back and all the cues we practice (leave it, sit/stay, settle, etc) came into their own.

It’s a marathon guys, not a tennis ball sprint 🐾

Our clients come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they all have in common…. they have owners that really show up for them. They put in the time, they do the work and they see the results. There’s no short cuts here or quick fixes, and sadly I do not own a magic wand 🪄 We do work at it together during our scheduled sessions, of course, but most of the practicing is done “behind the scenes”. That’s where the real magic happens. Changing behaviour can be difficult and draining, but it can also be fun and hugely rewarding. Keep on pushing you lovely lot, I’m so proud of the work you put in each and every day. 🐾💗

Most dogs don’t like to be pet on their head by strangers. Instead, if you want to say hello and you’ve asked their guardian, say hello verbally and allow the dog to choose if they want to be pet. If they come closer for a sniff, leave your hand at your side. Allow them to sniff and initiate a pet, then pet their side behind their shoulders and stop. If they want more, they’ll let you know. Consent is important for dogs, too.

His owners live on quite a busy road with a bit of a blind bend, so this is essential training to keep everyone safe. Notice we’re using a (loose) lead here as a safety net until the behaviour is more solid. Spoiler alert 🚨 he didn’t budge 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩
