Did you know we have a vaccination amnesty in place for any horse starting a course in March and April 2025 👏. Raising awareness of the importance of routine vaccination. We will be posting regular posts full of information on safe guarding your horse.

Ready… Set…Vaccinate! - Protect Your Horse Against Equine Influenza

Equine influenza as a disease is often underestimated because we expect horses to be vaccinated. However, unvaccinated horses risk severe illness during outbreaks and vaccinated ones can still be affected.
The virus, which targets the respiratory system, spreads quickly through the air, contact and contaminated equipment. Though rarely fatal, it can seriously affect a horse's health and performance.

Clinical signs to look out for;

High temperature: Typically reaches 102–106°F (38.9–41.1°C)

Persistent cough: Lasting weeks beyond other symptoms

Nasal discharge: Starts clear, becomes thicker

Lethargy: Horses reluctant to move or exercise

Loss of appetite: Reduced eating due to discomfort

Swollen lymph nodes: Tender submandibular nodes

Increased respiratory rate: Rapid breathing from infection

Muscle soreness: Some horses experience stiffness

Initial recovery usually takes a few weeks: more severe symptoms often affect young, old, or weak horses.

Early detection and care are crucial to manage and prevent spread.

Please give the clinical a call if you wish to book your horse in 01661 842542.

We have another excellent case to share with you all, a case Alex has been working closely with in clinic.

The puzzling presentation 🤔

Barbie is a sassy 💁‍♀️🐴 chestnut mare with a delightful pique for drama. She has spent so much time with us lately that she deserves a treatment room named in her honour 🤣!

Barbie came to us with complex lameness issues and so far, she has made use of nearly every lameness diagnostic tool in our armoury and has caused a fair amount of frustrated head scratching from the team.

In addition to fore and hind limb lameness Barbie has an unusual horizontal head carriage with an erratic head and neck movement. As part of the diagnostic process a scintigraphy investigation was performed, and despite the multiple areas of interest highlighted, the neck area showed no significant inflammation, which was puzzling considering her posture. Extensive positive nerve blocks to her limbs produced improved lameness but made no change to the head tilt. Alex was sure there was something amiss and initiated radiographs of Barbie’s neck, which revealed a 3mm x 6mm bone fragment at insertion of nuchal ligament on the poll, just below the most proximal aspect of poll.

Ultrasound helped establish a treatment protocol and shockwave treatment was performed on Barbies Nuchal ligament to stimulate healing. For those who haven’t seen or experienced shockwave treatment previously here’s a little bit of information on what it is - shockwave therapy produces waves of sound energy, which when applied to the surface of the skin, can target the underlying tissues. These shockwaves produce a focal area of high pressure in the tissue which promotes blood flow, enhancing the delivery of nutrients and oxygen, which are essential for tissue repair. It is also believed to reduce pain by over-stimulating pain receptors, which can decrease their sensitivity. This treatment is accompanied by a loud clacking sound (listen to video), and it is necessary to sedate the horse during the procedure for comfort and safety.

We can honestly say we were not sure how Barbie would react to this treatment to her head. As always, a chestnut mare contrary nature prevailed and she surprised us all, with minimal sedation Barbie seemed to quite enjoy the session, like she was having a massage at a spa ☺️.

We are all very fond of Barbie 🩷 and her resilient owner Ellen, who has had her fair share of drama from this loveable mare. We look forward to seeing Barbie move with more ease and comfort as treatment progresses.

🗣 Is your horse up to date with vaccinations? 🤷‍♀️

We understand that life can get busy, and appointments can sometimes be overlooked 🤦‍♀️.
We want to emphasise the importance of timely vaccinations in preventing potential health issues. Maintaining a current and up-to-date vaccination schedule is crucial for preventing the spread of diseases and safeguarding the health of your horse.

Has your horse missed annual vaccination?

Do you have a horse starting a vaccination course?

Don’t worry we can get them back on track with a new course 💪.

As part of our equine flu initiative, MSD and Boehringer are holding a vaccine amnesty and offering the third vaccination free of charge, for all horses, ponies and donkeys beginning their equine influenza course during March and April 2025.

Please call the clinic on 01661 842542 to get your 1st and 2nd appointments booked in.

**Vaccine cost only, visit fees still apply. The offer is only open to horses that are over 9 months of age and have not yet been vaccinated against equine influenza or are overdue an annual booster. First vaccination to take place in March or April 2025.The free vaccination is only for the third vaccination of the course.

Patience is Rewarded!!!
Our vet Nicola was called out of hours to an intrepid equine who had a sudden desire to jump out of his stable and make for the hills. The effort to clear the stable door was easily a ten out of ten but the ex*****on was a decided zero.
Bailey came off worse than the door with a hock wound and after examination was prescribed a course of anti-inflammatory and antibiotics, alongside cold hosing and restricted paddock rest. Fortunately, he was sound.
At follow up visit’s Bailey presented with recurrent swelling and purulent discharge in the hock area but remained weight bearing and sound. Jumping out of his stable was well out of Bailey’s usual behaviour had everyone on the yard puzzled, so Nicola ran blood tests to investigate a possible cause, while further diagnostics of the hock wound showed thickening over the dorsal medial pouch of Tibo tarsal joint. Ultrasound was performed and low and behold a foreign body was revealed lurking under the skin.
Because of the sensitive surrounding structures, it was decided to encourage the foreign body out with hot poulticing and gentle hand walking, to ensure further damage was kept to a minimum. At re-examinations the vets removed crusting and re-opened the wounds to allow drainage and encourage the foreign body towards the surface.
Finally, the wait was over!!!
Weeks later an urgent call came from Bailey’s owner advising that the foreign body could be seen peeking out of the wound.
Alex was free and set off to attend and the eagerly anticipated foreign body was swiftly removed with local anesthetic infiltration. A piece of wood, which measured in at a whooping 5cm in length by 1cm wide, along with some other wood splinters, was removed with forceps. The cavity was carefully curetted and flushed out with saline. Ultrasound revealed no further visible foreign bodies, and everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Thank you to Bailey’s owners for allowing us to share his story, their perseverance in waiting and being diligent with management changes and care. It was discovered that Bailey’s behavioural changes had been a result of getting to much protein in his diet, some feed changes restored the balance, and we are happy to report that Bailey is doing really well. Bailey’s owner is thrilled to have him back in to his usual placid self and is enjoying his ridden work again, without any further attempts to plot an escape.

Introducing ‘What’s your worm risk’
A free, easy-to-use online tool that allows owners to calculate their horse’s worm risk.
Use the QR code visit the website whatsyourwormrisk.com

The What’s Your Worm Risk calculator uses published expert information on equine worm infections to estimate the level of worm infection risk for horses, using questions that relate to transmission and control. Wormer resistance is an increasing threat to equine health and welfare, and we need to reduce unnecessary worming treatments that increase the risk of resistance occurring. The online tool categorises horses as low, moderate or high risk of infection. For each category, information is provided on the steps to take to improve worm control which should be discussed with your veterinary surgeon, Suitably Qualified Person or veterinary pharmacist.
