World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

This week, we're proud to join the global movement to combat antimicrobial resistance. The theme for this year is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.”

Educate: Understanding antimicrobial resistance is crucial for protecting our horses. By educating ourselves and horse owners, we can make informed decisions about medication use.

Advocate: Let’s champion responsible antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine. It’s our duty to promote practices that safeguard the effectiveness of these vital medications.

Act Now: Every action counts! Whether it’s proper dosing, avoiding unnecessary prescriptions, or regular consultations, your choices play a key role in fighting resistance.

As the leaves change and autumn sets in, it’s important to remember that laminitis doesn’t take a season off. Even though the weather is cooler, horses are still at risk ☢️.

Laminitis can be triggered by factors such as changes in diet and rich pastures. In addition, horses with uncontrolled PPID (Cushings) are at even greater risk of laminitis in the autumn. Stay vigilant and keep an eye out for any signs of discomfort in your horses.

What to watch for 👀:
Lameness
Heat in the hooves
Changes in behaviour

Prevention tips 🤓
Be mindful of rich pasture and sudden changes in diet
Keep up with regular trims and hoof health checks
Keep your horse’s weight in check to avoid additional stress on their hooves

Keeping your horse healthy through every season is key to preventing laminitis 🍂🌧❄️☀️👍

Treating equine asthma effectively involves a comprehensive approach that combines environmental management with medicine intervention.

The environment is crucial factor in triggering and worsening symptoms. Severe cases require medication to reduce inflammation and bronchoconstriction. This typically involves corticosteroids or bronchodilators administered orally, by inhalation, or intravenously.
It’s crucial to understand that while medicines can help control symptoms, they do not cure equine asthma. Instead, they manage inflammation and improve breathing. Therefore, a tailored treatment approach is vital, wherein both environmental modifications and medicine therapy are customized to suit the individual horse’s needs.

Diagnostics are crucial for monitoring the effectiveness of treatments on inflammation and airway constriction. Vets use these insights to adjust treatment plans, whether by changing medication dosages, modifying environmental conditions, or maintaining the current regime.

Equine asthma can be prevented and managed with proper stable and environmental care. This includes ensuring good ventilation, using dust-free bedding, and providing high-quality, low-dust hay. Regular turnout and minimizing exposure to irritants such as mould and pollen can prevent flare-ups.

Collaborating with your vet for a personalized management plan is crucial for effectively addressing equine asthma and improving the wellbeing of affected horses.

Regular veterinary check-ups are required to monitor the response to treatment and management.

Let out on good behaviour 😇 we sent Morne, Michelle and Alex to attend the annual BEVA congress held in Liverpool, which runs over 4 days.
The BEVA congress hosts CPD sessions covering a vast amount of different equine medicine and surgery topics, the vets spent their time in lectures hosted by international speakers, practical sessions and a chance to meet companies within the equine industry.
It wasn't all learning though they were also allowed out to socialise at the BEVA ball held on the Friday evening which welcomed the new president of BEVA, as you can see Morne and Michelle were all smiles in the photo booth. 📸😁

Ever wonder why your horse might be spooking at things that seem perfectly normal? Here’s a quick rundown on why your horse might be jumping at shadows:

Health issues: If spooking seems sudden or severe, it's worth checking in with your vet. Discomfort, pain or eye issues can make a horse more jumpy

Heightened senses: Horses have incredibly sharp senses and are naturally wired to be alert to potential threats

New environments: Moving to a new place or changing their routine can make your horse feel uneasy. Any new sight or sound can be a source of anxiety

Past experiences: Sometimes, past traumas or negative experiences can cause a horse to be more reactive to certain stimuli.

Lack of confidence: Horses with less training or confidence might spook more easily

If you are worried about your horse’s spooking, drop us a message or give us a call 01661 842542

Last week our lovely Maddy started her journey to become a qualified RVN.
A two year course at the vet partners nursing school which is based at Liphook equine hospital. The course will prepare her for a career in specialist equine nursing, regulated by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. You may see Maddy out and about with the vets developing her skills or greeting you in clinic and assisting the vets with various procedures.
Good luck Maddy - You will do great 😀👍

🔍 Understanding the 2 and 5 Stage Vetting Process 🐴

When buying a horse, a 2-stage vetting is a practical option, especially if you're looking for a basic health check.

Here’s what this streamlined process includes:

1️⃣ Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

The vet conducts a thorough physical examination while the horse is at rest. This includes checking vital signs, conformation, eyes, teeth, and palpating limbs for any signs of swelling or abnormalities.

2️⃣ Stage 2: Walk and Trot in Hand
The horse is walked and trotted in hand on a hard, flat surface. The vet observes for any signs of lameness or irregular gait, and checks the horse's movement for balance and symmetry.

✨ When to Choose a 2-Stage Vetting:
Ideal for young, unridden horses or horses with a known health history. A cost-effective option if you’re purchasing a horse for light work or as a companion.

💡 Remember:
While a 2-stage vetting offers a good overview, it doesn’t include the exercise phase or post-exercise evaluation, which are covered in the 5-stage vetting.

🔍 The 5 Stages of a Pre-Purchase Examination 🐴
Here's what to expect:
Stage 1 and 2 as above with the 2 stage with the addition of the following stages.

3️⃣ Stage 3: Exercise Phase
The horse is exercised to assess respiratory and cardiovascular health. The vet looks for signs of distress, unevenness, or other issues that may only appear under physical exertion.

4️⃣ Stage 4: Period of Rest
After exercise, the horse is allowed to rest. The vet checks recovery, including heart and respiratory rates, and examines the horse again for any post-exercise lameness.

5️⃣ Stage 5: Final Examination
Flexion tests are performed to assess joint health, and the vet may recommend additional tests such as X-rays or ultrasound based on the findings.

💡 Why Go Through All Five Stages?
Each stage gives a deeper insight into the horse’s health, helping you make the best decision for your investment.

Buying a new horse should be an exciting experience and we are here to help you make an informed choice about your new purchase by providing experienced veterinarians to perform 5 stage and 2 stage pre-purchase vetting's 🔍 🐴

Are you thinking about buying a horse?

A pre-purchase examination (PPE) is a vital step to ensure your new equine partner is healthy and fit for the purpose required.

👨‍⚕️ What Is a Pre-purchase examination?

A Pre-purchase examination is a thorough vet check-up that assesses the overall health, soundness, and suitability of the horse for your intended purpose. It includes a physical exam, lameness evaluation, and may involve diagnostic imaging like X-rays if they are requested.

✨ Why It’s Important:

Prevent Surprises: Identify potential health issues before you buy.
Ensure Suitability: Make sure the horse is a good match for your needs, whether for sport, pleasure, or breeding.
Invest Wisely: A pre-purchase exam helps you make an informed decision, potentially saving you from costly medical bills down the line.

📋 What to Expect:

Physical examination
Flexion tests
Heart and lung evaluation
Hoof and leg assessment
Exercise tolerance and recovery
Optional X-rays and blood tests

💡 Tip: Always choose a vet who is independent of the seller to ensure an unbiased evaluation.
