We are urging clients to be vigilant 🧐Laminitis isn't just a spring issue; it can strike year-round. With the recent changeable weather it is important to keep an eye on horses at risk.
Winter grass can still be high in fructans and when excessive consumption is combined with less exercise and dietary changes vulnerable horses can be at risk.

You can manage this by monitoring grazing, regularly scoring body condition and providing a balanced, low-sugar hay diet.

We would also advise regular farrier visits. As they are crucial to maintain hoof structure and balance, easing pressure on the laminae. Implementing a exercise regime suitable to your horse's needs promotes circulation and hoof health.

Stay alert to keep your horse healthy and happy through winter.

Hands up 🙋‍♀️ who is feeling the sudden drop in temperature 🥶❄️🌬!!!!
I know we are, especially Alex👨🏻‍💻. Luckily we are keeping him busy in clinic with plenty MRI’s and lameness work-ups!!!

With the sudden drop in temperature 🌡 set to continue over into the weekend, it’s essential to take extra precautions to keep your horse healthy and colic-free this winter!
Here are some helpful tips to prevent colic during the colder months:
• Feed consistently 🌾 : Stick to a regular feeding schedule with quality forage to support digestion.
• Stay hydrated 💦 : Ensure access to fresh, unfrozen water and consider adding electrolytes to encourage drinking, or give a nice warm sloppy mash.
• Encourage movement 🐎💨: Provide turnout or exercise daily to promote healthy digestion.

If you notice any signs of colic: restlessness, pawing at the ground, rolling or thrashing, looking at the abdomen, loss of appetite, abnormal bowel movements, contact the clinic immediately on 🗣📞01661 842542.
Stay vigilant 👀 to keep your horses happy and healthy this winter😃!

As we approach the Christmas holidays, please ensure an adequate supply of medication for your horse. Please place your orders for any necessary repeat medications as soon as possible to ensure availability throughout the festive season.

To avoid any inconvenience, we advise collecting your medication directly from the practice. Postal services may experience delays and during this busy period, picking up in person will ensure you have what you need.

Please allow up to 48 hours for veterinary authorisation and processing of your prescription request. Thank you for your attention to this matter and we wish you and your horse a wonderful holiday season.

As the festive season approaches, many of us may be planning to travel and enjoy some well-deserved time off with family and friends. Prior to going away, please contact us to let us know who has authority to act on your behalf while you are away. This can save valuable time and could save your horse’s life in the case of a veterinary emergency.

Ensure that you nominate someone you can trust to make decisions about your horse while you are away and discuss with them your emergency plan options and insurance information etc, should the situation arise where this information is needed. This will give you peace of mind that your horse will be taken care of appropriately in the event that a veterinary call out is required.

Honey was a pleasure to have in clinic and we are so glad to hear she is well on the mend and back to her cheeky self.
Thank you equine practice for the referral.

This little cutie is Honey 😍. Honey showed signs of colic one morning last week, rolling, pawing and refusing to eat her breakfast, alongside there being very few piles of faeces in the stable she shares with her best friend Sorrel.

Honey was seen quickly and anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic medication was administered. Unfortunately colic symptoms resumed approximately 4 hours later and, after another examination revealed a raised heart rate and very few gut sounds, the decision was made to refer Honey to Bearl Equine Clinic for further monitoring overnight.

On arrival her heart rate had reduced significantly, however she was still lethargic and definitely not her usual cheeky self! An impaction can be very tricky to diagnose in such a little patient but, as this was a possible cause of her colic symptoms she received intravenous fluid therapy for the next 24 hours with lots of intensive nursing (regular cuddles always included!). She was discharged after 48 hours and has made a full recovery!

Here she is 7 days later during Kathryn's routine visit for her friends' annual vaccinations, all ready to go out and get super muddy!

Although Honey had no drastic dietary changes prior to this episode remember impaction colic is a common problem for us to encounter at this time of year due to lack of grass and increased feeding of dry roughage. Please try to make all dietary changes as slowly as possible and if the ground is frosty try to feed the forage your horses and ponies are most used to whether this be hay, soaked hay or haylage, as changes such as these can be enough to cause colic symptoms to arise. If you have any queries about feeding or any upcoming changes to diet or turnout please do not hesitate to contact us on 01916031122.
