๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Arthritis in cats and dogs ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

You may notice your pet slowing down and taking it easier when out on walks. You may also notice that they are reluctant to play, or going up and down the stairs become a bit of a struggle. As arthritis is a progressive joint disease, you will find that symptoms develop and worsen over time.

Cold weather can make the symptoms worse but it can also make those symptoms more obvious to us. If they appear stiff or slow or yelp out in pain during the winter months, this could be a sign of arthritis.

Early detection is key, so if you think your dog may be showing signs of arthritis, speak to your vet for a health check and for advice.

**Time limited offer**

Book an appointment before 30th September 2024 and if your pet is diagnosed or suspected to have arthritis, we will administer the first pain management dose completely free! Please note that only the pain management treatment is free, but the appointment is a payable appointment.

For more information about arthritis please visit our blog https://www.orchardhousevets.com/advice/arthritis/

๐Ÿ” Myth busting with Orchard House Vets ๐Ÿ”

Are cats are nocturnal?

Cats are not nocturnal, but they are naturally crepuscular, which means they're most active at dawn and dusk. This is when hunting opportunities are best and thereโ€™s enough light for them to see well.

Just because your cat is domesticated, it does not mean they will ignore this genetic predisposition. But they'll usually adapt to your routine.

Cats often sleep when the house is quiet and become more active when people arrive home. They may sleep at night, but they'll often still wake at least a couple of times.

If you want to help your cat adapt to your routine, you can try giving them a warm bed and playing with them in the evening before you go to bed.

The importance of neutering our feline friends cannot be understated. One cat can produce four kittens, who in turn can produce just 8 months later, and so on. Neutering is the best and most effective way to help keep the cat population, and in turn the numbers of cats in rescue centres down.

Oliver is a bit of an older boy, but still young at 13! He came in for his annual health check and booster vaccination and is as fit as a fiddle! Oliver first came to Orchard House Vets as an 8 week old kitten, so we know him well, and he knows us well! The continuity of vet care is important in gaining trust with your cat. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ” Myth busting with Orchard House Vets ๐Ÿ”

Do cats always land on their feet?

More often than not, cats will land on their feet when they fall a short distance. This is because they have a โ€˜righting reflexโ€™, where they are able to twist around very quickly in the air when falling. They also have very flexible backbones, which help them in doing this.

Sadly, cats do not always land on their feet. Every year our animal hospitals treat cats that have fallen from a height, often out of windows several storeys high.

Some cats make a recovery, but unfortunately, many suffer life changing injuries that can be expensive to treat for owners.

We recommend keeping windows closed or fixing mesh to windows and balconies during the summer to prevent cats from falling out.

Did you know that we offer daily and weekly specialist vet care and surgeries?

๐Ÿพ We have a weekly visit from North East Veterinary Imaging who performs specialist procedures such as ultrasound, endoscopy and echocardiograms.

๐Ÿพ We are one of the very few practices in the North East to offer laparoscopic surgery

๐Ÿพ We offer dental radiography and dental surgery, and have vets with a special interest in dental surgeries!

๐Ÿ’š We understand that specialist care can often be stressful and worrying, and that is why we strive to offer as many specialist services in our practices, so you see your familiar and friendly team!

Cheeky chappy 'Badger' was in the practice recently for his monthly Librela injection. Our team love seeing Badger, he is such a cheeky fella!

Librela is used in the treatment for Osteoarthritis, a condition that can affect dogs of all ages, but more commonly in older dogs. Badger is doing so well with treatment and pulls to get into the practice. (Nothing to do with reception waiting with treats and kisses!)

Myth-busting with Orchard House Vets

Our resident Sherlock Bones has donned the flat cap and asked our vets what common questions they are asked and whether they are the 'twoof' or a lie!

First up - 1. Dogs can only see in black and white

False โ€“ although they cannot see the world in full technicolour like we can, dogs can see some colours. Their eyes detect fewer colours than ours, so their perception is similar to humans with colour blindness.

They can tell the difference between blue and yellow, but see green and red as shades of grey.

Meet 10 week old Howl

We recently welcomed Howl to the surgery and the eagle eyed among you may notice he looks very similar to another dog we recently saw.

Well done if so - he is the brother of Quintin who we saw a few weeks back! They look so alike, and are both lovely dogs!

In July, we saw three adder bite cases. These were all in the North Tyne area, around Kielder forest and wark forest areas.

Please be vigilant between April and August as this is when adders are at their most active. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by an adder it is important to call us as soon as possible.

All of our surgeries are an anti-venom stockist!
