As we continue to celebrate our brilliant nurse team members as part of , our Student Veterinary Nurse Lauren Cook-Stevens tells us about her journey so far.

🗣 Lauren says: "I started my time at Wear as a client care team member. Having previously worked in hospitality and with a true love of all animals, working within a veterinary hospital really did seem like a dream come true.

"I absolutely loved being part of our client care team. I found the day-to-day role exciting and got a real sense of job satisfaction when organising emergency referrals. Helping owners and pets who really felt like they had exhausted all other options was so rewarding, especially when they went home!

"I never envisioned becoming a nurse as I was very happy in my job. However, if you had asked me when I was younger what I wanted to be when I grew up, it would most definitely have been a veterinary nurse! I was not the most academic throughout school, and after I left, I went straight into employment.

"Throughout my four years with client care, I made some brilliant friendships, not only within my immediate team but also with the nursing team. These friendships are what sparked me to believe in myself enough to pursue a career change. I moved over to the nursing team in September 2021 as a patient care assistant in the Orthopaedic team. But I still never really believed I could train as a veterinary nurse.

"However, surrounded by the most amazing team, my skills and love for nursing evolved, and I knew I could become a brilliant nurse if I had the opportunity. The first step to this was to resit my GCSE maths - which was probably the hardest thing I've had to do, but it was part of the criteria I needed to meet before I could be accepted onto the nursing course.

"Then, in September 2022, I secured a place at The College of Animal Welfare to complete an apprenticeship in veterinary nursing. I have loved the whole experience and didn't know it would be possible to learn so much with a combination of on-the-job learning, online lectures and the support of the nurses who are always available for demonstrations and professional discussions.

"I am coming towards the end of my apprenticeship, and I am due to qualify in the summer. I'll always be grateful for this opportunity and so proud of myself for working so hard to make my hopes of being a Registered Veterinary Nurse a reality!"

👋 In continued celebration of Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, today we would like to introduce you to Sharon Dobson, our fantastic Cardiology Registered Veterinary Nurse.

With a career spanning nearly 30 years, Sharon brings a wealth of experience to her role as a Registered Veterinary Nurse. Throughout her career, she has witnessed significant changes in veterinary medicine, including the emergence of specialist referral hospitals.

In 2015, Sharon became a member of our Cardiology team and enjoys varied days with patients ranging from six-week-old puppies and kittens to 20+ year-old patients, all requiring calm, compassionate and gentle handling.

In addition to regular nursing duties, Sharon's day can involve performing basic heart scans (echocardiograms), recording, printing, and assessing heart rhythms (electrocardiograms), programming and fitting 24-hour wearable heart monitors (Holters), and obtaining both Doppler and Oscillometric blood pressures.

Sharon is a reliable and skilled team member in urgent cardiac cases. She is adept at assisting with procedures such as thoracocentesis and pericardiocentesis and plays a crucial role in stabilising patients suffering from acute congestive heart failure with breathing difficulties.

Sharon enjoys taking time to get to know each of her patients and clients, ensuring their comfort and happiness. Her conversations with owners are not just about medical updates but also about ensuring they have no concerns and are managing to medicate and nurse their pets at home. Most importantly, she can make a significant difference in the lives of her patients, helping to improve their quality of life.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to Wear Referrals, Sharon; we are lucky to have you on our team! 🧡

In continued celebration of Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, today we want to introduce you to Nick Mann.

Nick embarked on his professional journey as a Patient Care Assistant in a primary care practice, then transitioned to nursing at another practice. His dedication and commitment to his profession led him to join our team during his second training year, where he has spent nine years diligently honing his skills.

👨‍⚕️To become a Registered Veterinary Nurse, Nick demonstrated his versatility and adaptability by completing 12 exams, 12 practical exams, a nursing portfolio, and four assignments.

He initially focused on setting up our laboratory department, then diversified into neurology, orthopaedics, and ICU before returning to our Laboratory and excelling in pathology, leading him to his current role as Lead Nurse.

Nick's daily responsibilities include:
🧡Ensuring accurate results for patient diagnoses
🧡Developing his team of Student and Registered Veterinary Nurses
🧡Supporting other Hospitals within the Linnaeus Group

He has enhanced our Internal Laboratory services, enabling faster diagnostics in-house, and contributed to scientific publications and new testing methods with manufacturers.

Looking ahead, Nick is driven by a strong vision to enhance our Laboratory service further. His goal is to facilitate quicker diagnoses and reunite more pets with their families quickly.

Thank you for your commitment and the support you provide to our hospital all year round.

Deazel's back up and running! 🐶

Hungarian Vizsla, Deazel, had been incredibly fit and active throughout his life but started having problems a couple of years ago, which culminated more recently in a major medical incident that left him with a deviated tongue, along with severe neck and head pain.

When he was referred to us, Clare Rusbridge, senior neurologist and professor in veterinary neurology, suspected Deazel was suffering from an incredibly rare disease only previously seen in humans.

Our team carried out advanced imaging to rule out structural causes and Clare soon concluded the beloved 13-year-old was indeed suffering from the condition 'neck tongue syndrome'.

It was decided to block the C1 and C2 nerve roots to see if this improved the clinical signs. Five months later, Deazel continues to go from strength to strength, enjoying walks and sleeping comfortably once again.

This month is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), a time dedicated to celebrating the amazing, diverse and vital roles our nursing team members play in the successful running of our hospital.

Today, we'd like to introduce Gemma Clarkson! 👋

Gemma has worked at Wear Referrals for more than seven years. Her role is mainly within our ICU department looking after critical patients but she is also heavily involved in the management of our blood and plasma stocks within the hospital.

Blood and plasma transfusions are key components in the stabilisation and treatment of patients with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) and Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP), and can also be used to help excessive blood loss in complex soft tissue surgeries among other conditions.

Every day, Gemma helps to check our blood and plasma stocks for their viability and their quantity recorded, liaising with Pet Blood Bank UK if we require any emergency supplies. Gemma also leads with our maintaining an up to date list of canine blood donors that can attend the hospital when additional blood is required, as well as supporting blood collection for our feline patients.

Blood and plasma management is often a challenging role due to stock and donor issues, but these stocks have such a huge impact in helping patients in a variety of situations.

Thank you, Gemma, for your vital work!

Pretty Polly's case certainly made our leading Neurology team Think Twice!

Sharing similar symptoms as world-famous singer Celine Dion, who is suffering from Stiff Person Syndrome, Polly was diagnosed with Stiff Dog Syndrome, a rare and agonising autoimmune disorder.

Three-year-old Polly presented to us after her symptoms had worsened over a period of time, with owner Lucy saying: “She couldn’t eat, drink or walk without it happening, and the stiffness was spreading over her body. She would go rigid for minutes at a time.”

Thankfully, Professor Clare Rusbridge, RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology here at Wear, was able to successfully diagnose Polly and map out a treatment plan, which now has her symptoms under control.

You can read the full story of Polly's rare condition here >>> https://yhoo.it/3TFEcMh

We're absolutely buzzing with the result of this case! 👌

Meet Buzz, a seven-year-old Collie who recently had a thoracotomy procedure with us. 🐶

His very generous owners were absolutely delighted with what our Soft Tissue team had done and how well Buzz was doing, so they brought some lovely gifts for them.

As well as his Soft Tissue treatment with the team here at Wear, Buzz also underwent three Orthopaedic procedures at our Cumbrian sister hospital Kentdale Referrals , so he really is the bionic collie!

🎉 Our Oncology Service is now three years old!

Aaron, our Head of Oncology, founded the service back in April 2021, and it has flourished since. 🧡

In 2022, Slavka joined and achieved her own milestone by becoming a Veterinary Oncology Specialist last year.

Later in the year, we initiated our residency training program and welcomed Katerina as our first oncology resident in the autumn.

Supported by an exceptional nursing team, our clinicians offer outstanding care to all of our patients and clients.

Over the past three years, we have treated over 1000 cats and dogs living in the north east of England with specialised cancer treatment.

DID YOU KNOW? 🧐

We are the first specialist referral centre in the UK to be able to offer the latest generation of an American canine elbow replacement system – the BioMedtrix TATE elbow.

The third generation of this elbow replacement system offers the most up-to-date instrumentation and implants designed for replacing the elbow joint in dogs to remove pain caused by severe osteoarthritis.

We received approval via independent ethical review by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to undertake this surgery, satisfying that experience and standards of care are appropriate for offering this advanced procedure.

Dogs with severe elbow osteoarthritis who are eligible for this surgery will be enrolled on a Phase II clinical trial of the system, where their outcome will be carefully monitored postoperatively.

We are now seeing cases for preliminary assessment for this surgery. Further details relating to the surgery, aftercare, and trial commitments will be provided to clients at the time of their initial consultation.

Introducing Jack! 👋 Jack was transferred to our emergency night team after eating a large quantity of baclofen tablets. 💊

Baclofen is a skeletal muscle relaxant used to treat muscle spasticity in people. It is highly toxic to dogs as it prevents all the muscles of the body from contracting, including those used for breathing, swallowing, and walking.

Jack's primary care practice had started treatment and washed out his stomach to remove what drug they could before he arrived at our intensive care unit.

He was in a coma when he arrived and was occasionally having seizure-like episodes. There was also concern he may have aspiration pneumonia because he could not swallow properly. He was given intralipid emulsion therapy to try and remove any remaining baclofen from his circulation and medication to control his neurological signs, as well as antibiotics for his pneumonia.

Jack spent 36 hours in a coma in our ICU under the care of Emergency and Critical Care Advanced Practitioner, ICU Veterinary Surgeon - Georgina Marshall and Registered Veterinary Nurse Karen Batey, our Lead Out-of-Hours Nurse, along with the whole team of dedicated emergency and critical care nurses from both the day and night teams ensuring he got the best ICU nursing care.

Although the initial concern was whether Jack would need to be placed on a mechanical ventilator to help his breathing, he made an amazing recovery and, as you can see, was discharged to his very happy family after 48 hours in our ICU. A phenomenal team effort! ❤️

We want to introduce you to Kev, our own superhero! 💪🐱

Kev was seen by our Internal Medicine team as an emergency after being unable to urinate and suffering from a bladder rupture. Kev was collapsed on arrival and in a critical condition. He had urine in his abdomen, severe kidney injury and also free fluid in his chest secondary to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart disease that causes the walls to be thicker than usual), which was diagnosed during the stabilisation process.

Following round-the-clock care in our dedicated Intensive Care Unit, Kev slowly recovered his kidney function and his bladder healed.

Now, Kev is enjoying his life back at home, and thanks to medical management and diet, his urinary problems have resolved!

🤔 Is Wear Emergencies – Veterinary Out-of-Hours Service the same as Wear Referrals?

Wear Emergency Out-of-Hours service is an emergency service that can be used when your usual vets are closed.

Vet practices can sign up to use us as their out-of-hours provider for pet emergencies – similar to a human Accident and Emergency Service.

We see all different types of animals using our emergency out-of-hours service – from dogs and cats through to rabbits, birds and even the occasional owl!

Wear Referrals is our main hospital, which is open during the daytime, and pets are referred here by your usual vet if they have conditions or need treatment your usual vet can’t provide.

Super Cooper! ❤️

Lovely five-year-old French Bulldog Cooper was seen by our Internal Medicine team as an emergency after a few days of bleeding from the gums and passing black stools. Cooper's condition was particularly concerning as he suddenly developed neurological signs, including a head tilt (dropping the head to one side), horizontal nystagmus (continuous movement of the eyes from side to side) and ataxia (difficulty walking).

After thorough investigations, Cooper was diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. Patients who suffer from this condition create antibodies that destroy their own platelets (blood clotting cells), causing them to bleed spontaneously anywhere in the body. As well as the bleeding in his mouth and intestines, Cooper had a bleed in his brain, which caused the neurological signs.

Cooper was started on immunosuppressive medication to stop the immune system from destroying the platelets, and we are delighted to say he has made an amazing recovery! 🐶

Well done, Super Cooper!
