Pretty Polly! 🐶
🧠 To mark #Rare Disease Day, we'd like to introduce Polly, whose journey led her to Wear after she experienced severe cramping, collapsing into agonising tetanic spasms.
Polly's owners noticed her painful tail muscle cramps, which worsened over six weeks, leaving her unable to walk without collapsing.
These frightening episodes intensified during moments of anxiety or excitement. Eventually diagnosed with Stiff Dog Syndrome, akin to the rare autoimmune neurological disorder in humans known as Stiff Person Syndrome, Polly's story mirrors that of singer Celine Dion, who also battles this condition.
Clare Rusbridge, Senior Neurologist and Professor in Veterinary Neurology, European and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Neurology, introduced a regimen of immune-suppressing drugs, antiepileptic medication, promoting muscle relaxation, and a magnesium-rich diet to treat Polly, whose clinical signs are now controlled.
She is happily back to living her best life with Lucy and Mark. 💪

World AMR Awareness Week
This week is World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), a global campaign that is celebrated annually to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance and the dangers it poses to both human and animal health.
It's critical that we preserve the effectiveness of our antibiotics for as long as possible, which can be achieved by only using them when necessary. The battle against antibiotic resistance is a collective effort, and we all have a role to play.
We’re going blue to raise awareness. Are you ready to do your part?

Sherpa - Wear Referrals
Sherpa, the beloved guide dog of Paralympic champion Denise Ross, recently went through a harrowing ordeal that tested both his and Denise's strength and resilience.
After being diagnosed with cancer in one of his hind legs, Sherpa underwent a series of treatments and surgeries that lasted over a year.
Denise, who went blind at the age of 18 and has relied on Sherpa for her independence and companionship ever since, was devastated when she discovered the lump on Sherpa's leg while grooming him in October 2021. She immediately took him to her local vet, who referred her to us for specialist care.
Sherpa was referred to our oncology service and, following a CT scan, our team found that he had a malignant, soft tissue sarcoma.
Anna Cronin, a Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, operated on him successfully, but Sherpa had to stay at the hospital for a month before he was allowed to go home.
Unfortunately, Sherpa managed to get at the wound and damage it, which led to another five-week stay with us. Despite this setback, Anna and the team were able to repair the damage and bring Sherpa back to full health.
Sherpa's story is a testament to the incredible bond between guide dogs and their owners and the courage and resilience these animals show in the face of adversity.
Despite his ordeal, Sherpa is returning to his normal self and eager to resume his duties as Denise's guide and companion.
