🎼 On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me - a top anaesthesia team! 🎼
We're so proud of our five-strong Anaesthesia team, made up of three Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) Specialist vets, one ECVAA Residency-trained vet and one VTS Specialist Anaesthesia RVN.
Led by head of service Felipe Marquez Grados, our amazing team provides individually tailored anaesthetic and analgesic plans for all patients to ensure optimal comfort and pain relief, while keeping patient safety paramount.

🌍💊 Antibiotic resistance is a global health challenge, and we need your help to keep antibiotics effective. That’s why we are proudly participating in Antibiotic Amnesty 2024!
Antibiotics are vital for treating many conditions in both animals and humans, but bacteria are becoming resistant to these medications. This resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences against antibiotics, making treatments less effective. Overusing antibiotics can increase this risk, leading to side effects and delaying accurate diagnoses.
Additionally, improper disposal of unused antibiotics can contribute to antimicrobial resistance and harm the environment by contaminating water systems and affecting wildlife. 🌊🐾
Throughout November, we invite pet owners to return any unused or expired antibiotics to us for safe disposal. Whether they’re from a recent prescription, antibiotics you didn’t need, or out-of-date medications, simply hand them to any member of our team.
Together, let’s ensure antibiotics remain effective! Please help us to spread awareness, by sharing this post.

Introducing Rudy! 👋
Little six-and-a-half-year-old Bull Terrier Rudy was referred to our Oncology team in April after a devastating diagnosis of high-grade lymphoma from his primary care vets.
Rudy’s owners found large lumps in his neck and in the front of his shoulders. This prompted their visit to their local vets, who took a small needle sample, which confirmed his diagnosis.
After his referral to our Specialist Oncology team, we carried out further tests, which confirmed B cell lymphoma.
We began Rudy on a 19-week CHOP chemotherapy protocol which was completed at the end of August. While chemotherapy treatment can often be associated with significant side-effects, Rudy tolerated all his treatments like a champ and was not affected at all. In fact, it’s safe to say he enjoyed his visits to our Oncology team and his weekly cuddles and treats!
We’re all so pleased with his response to the treatment and that he now has quality time with his loving and devoted family. ❤️

Day four
#WalkingWednesday
🥾🥾 Today, our Hospital Director, Darren Stubbs, brings you the fourth and final instalment of his epic walking adventure.
"Being almost at sea level all of the way, the terrain on day four was relatively flat, but we definitely felt the impact of walking against a strong prevailing wind! However, with only an occasional shower and with sun and dry weather across the week, we didn't complain about the breeze!
"The path entered Carlisle across Rickerby Park, then picked up the River Eden to take us to the Solway Firth with great views of the estuary and across into Dumfries and Galloway, and on to our final destination of Bowness On Solway, just over 22.5 miles from our starting point on the day, and 88.5 miles West of Wallsend.
"Our purpose for this walk was for four great friends to spend some quality time together doing an activity that is brilliant for both our physical and mental wellbeing, in a great location, and indulging in a passion we all have for hiking. A wonderful trip and I'm delighted to have been able to share it with you."

Pretty Polly! 🐶
🧠 To mark #Rare Disease Day, we'd like to introduce Polly, whose journey led her to Wear after she experienced severe cramping, collapsing into agonising tetanic spasms.
Polly's owners noticed her painful tail muscle cramps, which worsened over six weeks, leaving her unable to walk without collapsing.
These frightening episodes intensified during moments of anxiety or excitement. Eventually diagnosed with Stiff Dog Syndrome, akin to the rare autoimmune neurological disorder in humans known as Stiff Person Syndrome, Polly's story mirrors that of singer Celine Dion, who also battles this condition.
Clare Rusbridge, Senior Neurologist and Professor in Veterinary Neurology, European and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Neurology, introduced a regimen of immune-suppressing drugs, antiepileptic medication, promoting muscle relaxation, and a magnesium-rich diet to treat Polly, whose clinical signs are now controlled.
She is happily back to living her best life with Lucy and Mark. 💪
