Want to help the wildlife this winter? A lot of wild animals struggle throughout winter without our help - here's some ways you can help them get by this winter ❄️
🍂 Water - when the temperatures drop, finding clean, fresh water to drink can be difficult for wildlife but you can help by leaving some out for them, whether in a bird bath or just leaving a shallow bowl of water outside for them - just ensure you change the water everyday so it doesn't freeze and keeps it nice and fresh for them!
🍂 Leaves - instead of throwing away all the fallen leaves in your garden leave undisturbed piles as these make perfect nests in which animals can hide, rest and hibernate
🍂 Feed Them - it becomes very difficult for wildlife to find natural food such as berries, insects, worms and seeds during the winter, so by providing them with a range of seeds, mealworms, peanuts, suet and fatballs it really helps them get by
🍂 Frozen Ponds - if you have a pond it is important to check it everyday for ice. Toxic gases can build up in frozen ponds, killing fish or frogs that may be hiding at the bottom - but never tip boiling water onto it as this may harm the animals inside.
🍂 Hibernating Animals - before lighting any bonfires, ensure you check all wood or leaf piles carefully because animals such as hedgehogs, frogs and mice often hibernate in these cosy spots. Remember, if you find any wild animals in hibernation, be sure to leave them be.
🍂 Shelters - winter is the perfect time to put up a bird box, insect hotel or hedgehog house, these help to keep them safe, cosy and warm and it will often encourage them to come back to nest during spring
