Hypertension (high blood pressure) is common in older cats and dogs. Where symptoms are shown, they are more likely due to an underlying disease process such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or heart disease. For some patients, hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms until organ damage occurs. For this reason, we recommend annual routine blood pressure checks for cats and dogs over 7 years old. Find out more about hypertension at: vetcollection.co.uk/our-services/blood-pressure-checks

Good news, pets! Breakfast is coming early ⏰🐱🐶
The clocks spring forward this weekend, which means our furry friends get their breakfast an hour earlier (at least in their minds!) 🥓 While we might struggle with the lost hour of sleep, our pets will be thrilled with an unexpected early meal. Just be mindful that some pets have sensitive routines, so a gradual adjustment can help.

From midday on 18th January (Northern Ireland), 25th January (England and Scotland) and 30th January (Wales), it became a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu. Further details can be found here (England), here (Scotland), here (Northern Ireland) and here (Wales) Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) measures apply to all bird keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock and are essential to protecting flocks from avian influenza.

Occasionally, antibiotics are used to prevent infection, where an infection is considered very likely, or where infection could be catastrophic (such as after surgeries
like a hip replacement). However, bacteria can develop a resistance to antibiotics. As pet owners, you can help protect from antibiotic-resistant infections by giving all medications as prescribed, including finishing the course, and returning unused or leftover medication to the clinic for safe disposal. You can find out more about this here in our blog: https://www.vetcollection.co.uk/health/antibiotics-in-veterinary-practice/

With lambing season upon us, we kindly ask all dog owners to be vigilant and responsible. Sheep worrying can cause severe stress, injury or even loss of lambs and ewes.

🐾 Even the most well-behaved dogs can become excited or curious, leading to unintended harm
👁 Stay aware of your surroundings and keep dogs under close control

Every pet is different when it comes to taking flea and worm medication. Some will happily eat a ham wrapped pill only to spit the pill out at the last minute, others will run a mile when the spot on arrives and some pets get very anxious going to the vet for an injection. This is why not one treatment style fits all when it comes to parasite treatment. With a choice of tablets, spot on treatments and a long lasting injection your vet will be able to help you decided which is best for your pet. Speak to us today for further advice.

What else could pet insurance cover?

Many owners think that taking out pet insurance is just about covering the cost of veterinary care. While that is important, a good policy will also cover you for some of the other unexpected costs of being a pet owner. Remember not all pet insurance is the same so it is a good idea to check the cover provided and ask if you will be paying more for claiming.
