Feeding straw can be very beneficial particularly for horses and ponies that are naturally good doers. Recent studies have shown that using straw as part of your horse's ration - up to 50% - does not increase the risk of gastric ulcers and provides a valuable source of low calorie fibre.

Although straw has very little buffering capability feeding it is still beneficial for gastric health. Straw increases chew time and therefore greater saliva production. This is important as saliva contains bicarbonate which naturally helps buffer acidity in the horse's digestive tract. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘄𝘀 = 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗮 = 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵!

Our research has shown that horse owners of good doers are increasingly worried about feeding a sufficient amount of fibre to promote gut health, without resulting in weight gain. Our two newest products Ulser Lite and Meadow Lite with Herbs are perfect for this scenario, Ulser Lite also contains alfalfa pellets for increased buffering!
