And just like that, summer is at an end, and what a summer it has been! 😁

Just a reminder, I'm not working next week as I take some time off for my birthday, and catch up with some friends.

I'll be returning to work on Saturday 7th September, ready to hit the ground running with autumn/winter training! πŸ‚

My page will still be very current and active. And I'll be setting time aside each day to read and reply to messages so I'm still contactable, but this will only be once a day so replies might be a little slower than usual.

Pop your favourite pic from the summer in the comments!

🌟 Autumn/Winter Training - 2025 Prep! 🌟

As the 2024 summer season starts to draw to a close, it's a perfect time to reflect and set preliminary goals for 2025!

This first targets are used to shape your autumn and winter training! πŸ’ͺ

I always use the start of September to symbolise the beginning of our Autumn training, even if the start of our training involves a "wind down" and a holiday for the horse in question!

For other horses, September might mean that a training break comes to an end and it's "back to school" for them!

Each horse is an individual!

It's time to start thinking about your 2025 goals!

I have limited availability from now, through the first half of September for anyone who would like help planning their Autumn/Winter Training and Competing!

🌟 August = Admin and Organising Month 🌟

For me the 1st of September is just as important, if not more important than New Years Day.

It marks the start of our Autumn/Winter Training, which is focused towards our goals for next season.

I like to spend a bit of time in the last two weeks of August reflecting on the the last 12 months, and setting my goals/targets/aims for the next 12.

I look at areas of weakness, and strengths, and make my plan accordingly. It might be that I want to work on a particular area before going on a winter break, and picking it up again in the new year. Or I might decide to spend the winter focusing on specific skill or strength work.

From a business POV I like to plan out my training clinics, and set my own professional goals; qualifications, and training.

If you've been following mine and Jaffa's story on Instagram, you'll have seen that we are taking a side step in direction so our Autumn training will look very different this year!

More on this to come once Jaffa is home from the Equine Clinic next week 🀞.

I'll post the link to our profile in the comments.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I also offer time in August and September for a chance for any of my coaching clients to sit down and plan out their goals for the next 12 months, and set out their winter plan so they hit the hard dark months full of motivation!

Send me a message if you'd like to organise a sit down over a coffee!

🧑 Let's Talk about the Horse on Box Rest 🧑

As much as I bang on about how correct training and conditioning as injury prevention, the freak incidents still happen!

If you've been following Jaffa's Instagram you'll know that Jaffa is now on sudden box rest after a field accident has left him with a fractured sesamoid bone and sprained suspensory branch 😭

In the space of a few hours his entire routine and management has had to change. He's gone from regular work, to no work what's so ever, and confined to his (luckily larger than average) stable 24hrs a day apart from some incredibly cautious hand grazing.

How do we manage the horse on box rest?

Jaffa has had diet changed from his higher protein mash to support his work, to a chaff and balancer to make sure all of his basic box's are ticked but isn't over loaded with energy.

Ideally we would be swapping from haylage to hay to further reduce his energy intake, however, our yard is fortunate to have absolutely amazing, non rocket fuel haylage, that Jaffa loves! Of course meaning that he didn't eat the hay when tried to switch, and as I am wanting to keep his risk of colic and stress to a minimum, he's staying on haylage. I have however introduced a very low calorie, grass substitute forage replacer so that I am able to reduce the amount of haylage he has, and has some variety and interest in his forage.

I am gutted, as Jaffa currently looks the best he's ever looked while he's been with me and I want to try and keep the amount of muscle loss to a minimum!
Jaffa will be having weekly Equine Sports Massage Treatments to help to keep his muscle tone as much as possible, and keep his circulation pumping while on reduced movement.
He will also be doing some stretches and mobilisation exercises, only the ones he can do that won't cause any extra stress through his injured leg.

Box rest tends to be the start of a very long road of rehabilitation. It can be physically hard, and emotionally draining for both us and our horses but there are ways we can reduce the impact as much as possible.

πŸ₯• Do you feed a Mix or a Cube πŸ₯•

Just for now, put chaffs to one side.

What are the differences/benefits of feeding a mash or a cube?

Consider this, a competition mix and competition cube from the same brand, that are nutritionally similar in terms of fibre, protein, starch, sugar etc, which one are you buying?

As humans, we tend to buy the aesthetically pleasing mix over the boring cube, when in reality our horses probably couldn't care less!

But there's more to it than this!

A bag of mix contains many components of different sizes! It is possibly for the small components to fall through between the bigger "flakes" to the bottom of the bag, meaning that the nutritional components, and therefore, provisions may not be the same throughout the bag!

In comparison, the manufacturing process of cubes ensures should mean that each cube of a feed contains the same amount of each ingredient, making the the feed nutritionally uniform throughout the bag!

Cubes also have the added benefit that they can be soaked into a mash if needed for a dentally challenged horse!

There are some feeds that have the same name that come in either a mix or a cube form, that are however nutritionally different (Baileys Ease and Excel mix and Ease and Excel cubes are not nutritionally identical!), so it's important to check before swapping!

31/07/2024

πŸ₯• Safe Weight Loss πŸ₯•

Being over weight (Body Condition score 4 or 5) has many risks for your horse! It makes them more susceptible to developing Metabolic conditions such as Laminitis, whilst also increases their risk of physical injury (tendon/suspensory), or developing arthritis.

Weight loss occurs when you use more energy than is consumed.

This can be achieved in two ways;
- increasing workload (gradually/appropriately)
- decreasing the amount of energy provided in the
diet

Sounds simple?

However, the horse needs to consume, as a minimum, 1.5% of their bodyweight (dry matter), spread out over a 24hr period to ensure maintenance of digestive health, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Ways to reduce energy intake;
- reduce grazing
- feed soaked hay
- reduce/ switch to low energy bucket feed

You could also use trickle nets or grazing muzzles (if appropriate) to make your horse's forage ration last longer. Remember, horses shouldn't be left without food for longer than four hours to minimise the risk of developing ulcers, or colic.

A safe rate of weight loss for your horse is 1% of their bodyweight per week.

As your horse's body weight reduces, their ration size also needs to be altered so that is continues to be 1.5%.

30/07/2024

πŸ₯• Do you need to feed a Balancer? πŸ₯•

Blancers are low calorie feeds/supplements that provide a high concentration of essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are often lacking in a purely forage based diet.

These vitamins, minerals and amino acids play important roles in all sorts of body functions and reactions in order to keep your horse healthy, whilst also playing an import role in muscle fuction, and coat and hoof condition!

Following on from yesterday's post about energy requirements, there are many many feeds on the market that state they are fully balanced with all of the vitamins and minerals your horse needs.

However, this is when they are fed at the recommended levels on the bag. More often than not, this results in many horses receiving too much energy when combined with their grass/hay/haylage supply!

In short, if you are feeding less than the recommended quantity of a feed by the feed bag, it would be a good idea to feed a balancer alongside!

There are many different balancers available on the market!

Some are tailored towards the leisure horse, while others have a higher protein content to support the competition horse, and others are specifically formulated to fed along soaked hay if your horse requires!

29/07/2024

πŸ₯• Energy Requirements, WorkLoad, Behaviour πŸ₯•

Kicking of Nutrition Focus Week with looking into your horse's energy requirements!

This is no easy task!

There are multiple factors that need to be taken into consideration;
- your horse's current weight and Body Condition
Score
- your horse's workload
- your horse's fitness, type, and personality.

It is also important to consider energy sources depending on your horse's breed/"type", personality, whether or not they have any sensitivities/allergies, and any health conditions your horse may have. But this is another post for another day!

Supplying your horse with too much energy can have many side effects!

πŸ”ΉοΈ Too much energy that is not used for maintenance and workload will result in weight gain.
Perfect if your horse is currently underweight, but potentially a danger to your horses health if they are currently a healthy weight, or are already overweight! (Metabolic and physical implications)

πŸ”ΉοΈ Too much energy can also lead to the expression of undesirable behaviours. Horses that are described as "fresh", "hot", "sharp", or "spooky", may sometimes be a case of the horse receiving too much energy from their diet, or from an inappropriate source for them.
This is not to say that every "hot" horse is simply overfed, they all have their own personality and character after all, but the nutrition should certainly be looked at if you're having trouble!

Typically, an over supply of energy can result from an overestimation of the horses workload.
I put a post out a few weeks ago showing a table of what is actually considered as light, medium and hard work. I'll pop a link to this post in the comments!

On the flip side, an under supply of energy potentially leaves Horses vulnerable to injury due to fatigue!

Working with an Independent Nutritionist can help to make sure your horse's nutritional requirements are accurately calculated, and diet adjusted accordingly.

πŸ”ΉοΈπŸ”ΉοΈπŸ”ΉοΈ

Tomorrow, we'll continue with this line of thinking, looking into the role of Balancers in the horses diet.

Lovely afternoon coaching around Eland Lodge XC!

Arrow and Lace have been around before, but it was there first time xc this year, and they just wanted to make sure we didn't have any problems before they look towards entering some Hunter Trials.
Arrow looked the most confident he's ever looked today!

Zeta had her first time ever xc schooling with her boy Sam. Bit of a tentative start, but had found their stride by fence five and then just grew in confidence as they went around!
