Meet the Client…✨

Dudley!

Dudley joined us following surgical intervention of IVDD. Intervertebral Disc Disease is the bulging or extrusion of discs in the back, which can apply pressure onto the spinal cord. Though often associated with dacshunds, it can occur in any breed and the effects can vary significantly.

Unfortunately, Dudley was badly affected - his surgeon gave him a 50/50 chance. Dudley had no feeling past the surgical site, couldn’t move his back legs, couldn’t urinate unassisted, and couldn’t wag his tail.

Soon after surgery, Dudley had regular at-home visits from our vet physio until he was ready to begin hydro-physio.

Dudley had his 9th session at AquaPaws this week! He has regained hindlimb motor function (ability to walk), and walked himself out of the door wagging his tail (albeit a little wobbly!).

We are so proud of his progress and the dedication from his owners with his at-home exercises is clear to see!

Keep going Dudley! 🌟

Meet The Client…✨

Name: Judy (10 months old)

Judy came to us for rehabilitation following the removal of the top of her thigh bone (femoral excision arthroplasty). The surgery was performed due to significant degradation in one of Judy’s hips, causing severe pain and lameness.

With specific hydrotherapy exercises, physio techniques and home exercise/advice, Judy is improving week on week! Well done to her owners for all their hard work.

Unfortunately for us, but fantastic news for her and her owners, it wont be long until Judy won’t need our help anymore! 🥹

4 Things All Dog Owners Should Know…

1️⃣ Bin your Ball Thrower! - Additional height, speed and repetitions achieved with ball throwers, mean our pets have to jump/twist for their ball. The increased stress and torsion on joints causes tissue micro-damage, which can result in catastrophic injuries. Stick to hand throwing/rolling balls.

2️⃣ Feed for activity, not breed or size - obesity is a major problem amongst domestic dogs. If your pets exercise levels change, for example crate rest post surgery, make sure you reduce their calorific intake. Dogs undergoing rehabilitation will benefit being on the lighter side - less compressive weight through their limbs.

3️⃣ Limit uncontrolled stairs and jumping - whizzing up/down stairs and on/off furniture can increase the risk of soft tissue injuries. Limiting or controlling these movements could save you thousands of pounds and weeks of rehabilitation in the future.

4️⃣ Check your harness design - some fashionable harness designs poorly consider pet anatomy and biomechanics. Straps horizontally across the chest restrict shoulder range of movement and can cause pressure related tissue damage beneath, particularly in dogs who pull. Try a Y shape harness or alternative walking apparatus’ for better freedom of movement for your dog.

Name: Saffron

Saffron is an elderly Labrador who suffers with hip dysplasia and hindlimb muscular atrophy (wastage). She visits us regularly to maintain joint mobility and hindlimb strength in a reduced weight bearing environment (the water!). These are key to keeping her comfortable and mobile in her senior years.

This week, Saffron tackled her first incline on our water treadmill, and she absolutely smashed it! 👏🏻
