Crate training should be "Crate AND" training. As in your dog has separation anxiety so you're crate training AND speaking to a vet about medication. Or you're crate training AND using a dog walker to break up the home alone time.

Your dog destroys things when left alone so you're crate training AND upping his enrichment.

Crate training isn't a quick fix. It's very quickly recommended in this group as if it's a magical solve all your issues solution. Crate training should be beneficial for your dog. If your dog hates it then it's aversive.

My husband's disabilities have kept him unable to find fulfilling work for a long time. In the last couple years he's been unable to work at all.

This course is something he'd really love to do, but as I'm the only earner we don't have the funds to allow him to do it. It would really help to get him back into work and into a career he'd enjoy.

I wouldn't normally post something like this but he's so close to his goal! Even liking the post would help immensely.

I'm often asked why I called my business Omega. I named it as a little tongue in cheek nod to the outdated Alpha theory.

Alpha is the first. Omega is the last.

In Alpha theory the idea is that you become the dominant party in your relationship. You put yourself first.

Here at Omega Dog Training? You put your ego last.

In 1968 David Mech wrote about dominance theory and "alpha wolves" in relation to studying captive wolves that weren't from the same family. The hierarchy observed in that study was described as being similar to what you see in prisons when people are forced to interact with each other.

Do you have a prison-like hierarchy in your home? With your friends? Probably not.

Dogs do not harbour notions of wanting to dominate you or wanting to be an alpha. There's nothing wrong with them being on the furniture or sleeping in your bed. They don't need to walk in step or slightly behind you. Them leaving through a door before you do means nothing to them other than "I'm done being in this space and want to be in that space."

And, please I beg you, stop shoving your hands in your dog's food bowl.

Judging by the texts I got, quite a few of you saw me with this lovely lady, Midge, on last night's episode of The Dog House. Apologies to any of my clients whose dogs heard my voice and thought they were about to get sausages!

Lurchers like Midge are why I started my business with the training ethos I have. She was an amazing example of how effective positive reinforcement training is.

Woodgreen Pets Charity will sadly always have lurchers needing homes due to the location of the centre but they're wonderful dogs. Midge is the reason I've got my own rescue lurcher now and Five Mile Films has really captured reality of what it's like for them to go from rescue to rescued.

Making dog training more accessible.

This email landed in my inbox today. And quite frankly, I was taken aback. I make sure to only work with companies I've been confident align with my values. I believe vibrate and sound collars to be aversive tools. But they're also physically dangerous.

I will discuss why I don't like vibrate collars in another post (if it only vibrates why does it need 2 prongs in contact with the dog's skin, and what sound does it make and why). But I want to discuss the safety of such products.

These products are not regulated.

So you're putting a battery onto your dog's throat. Does your dog go swimming? Does your dog go out in the rain? Is the battery made to withstand constant heat from your dog's body? Does your dog play with other dogs where the battery could get knocked and damaged? Sometimes do batteries just fail?

A £25 battery with a cheap plastic casing with no certificates of regulation, no proof of testing and no guarantee that it is waterproof is not something to stick around your dog's throat. Even if it "only" vibrates.

Let’s debunk the dominance myth! 🐾

The idea that dogs try to ‘dominate’ us is outdated and disproven. We already control every aspect of their lives—from their food to where they sleep. Dogs don’t need to 'challenge' us for control. Instead, they thrive with clear guidance, trust, and positive reinforcement. Let’s lead with kindness, not outdated theories. 💙

This is a post from a dog trainer in a dog training group. This person is not replying to me, I just came across it through my scrolling. I have kept them anonymous and do not even indicate their gender in this post.

This is why the UK needs to pull their finger out and ban these disgusting "training" tools.

For context this person is saying that their dog is scared to go out in the rain and their dog is trained to "obey" their commands to go outside in the rain. So they puts the shock collar on the dog and the dog "listens".

That is abuse. If your dog is scared of something and you shock them in to "obeying" you've lost the battle. You've told your dog that you don't give a damn about their mental state and they exist to solely obey you. If I'm faced with this I get an umbrella and go out with the dog to let him know that hey, I know this is unpleasant but I'm here with you in this.

If you need a sentient being to be that subservient to you, you are the one who needs help. People certainly shouldn't be paying you for yours.
