‼️ FPV OUTBREAK (Feline Parvovirus/Panleukopenia) ‼️
We are urging owners to ensure their cats are up to date with their vaccinations due to severe outbreaks of FPV across England. This virus is quickly and easily spread via faeces, urine, saliva and vomitus of infected cats and is highly resistant to the environment. It attacks the guts and immune system and can cause serious illness and sometimes death, especially in kittens.
Charities in England have reported 3x as many cases this summer than last year. Charities are unable to help cats when their rescue centres are struck by outbreaks, which are increasing exponentially.
The symptoms include:
* Vomiting
* Diarrhoea
* Depression
* Pyrexia (fever)
* Foetal loss or kittens born with severe issues
* Sudden death
Unfortunately, there is no cure for FPV and we are only able to provide supportive care, which must be started as soon as possible for the best chance of recovery. If you notice any concerning symptoms please contact the practice.
The best way to prevent FPV is by having your cats and kittens vaccinated and keeping up to date with yearly boosters, as well as keeping your cats inside until they’re neutered. Please contact the practice if you need to have your cat vaccinated or are unsure when they were last given.
