You can read advice on how to prevent colic in the latest issue of Pet Focus.

It is essential to seek timely treatment. If your horse is presenting with colic symptoms such as depression, anxious behaviour like pawing the ground, the horse looking at their side, lying down, getting up, rolling and sweating you should call your vet as soon as possible.

If you have any concerns, call us on 01728 685123

Colic is very uncomfortable for horses, and can even require surgery.

Registered equine veterinary nurse Marie Rippingale has some top tips for how to prevent your horse developing colic through diet, exercise and parasite control.

Hi everyone
Chris (my partner) and I have now completed our Pennine way challenge in aid of Cancer UK.

A walk which began in Edale in Derbyshire and finished in Kirk Yetholm in Scotland.
Two hundred and sixty eight miles over sixteen days and covering every type of terrain from pasture land , mountains , hills
riversides and moorland .

We walked through desolate farm yards , across boggy moors , alongside Hadrians Wall , scrambled up the side of waterfalls and negotiated the Cheviot Hills

It was an amazing trip where we met some wonderful people (and dogs) along the way
and have brought home so many fantastic memories .

So a huge" Thank you " to everyone who has supported us and sent us those special words of encouragement on those tough days !!
Without this we wouldn't have been able to raise the grand total of approx £1500 for Cancer UK .
Sending some photos
The very start ...the end and some bits inbetween !!

With very Best Wishes
Nicky ( Deben Valley Equine) and Chris x

They have only gone and done it!!! 🎉🎉🎉🥳🥳
Walked the whole of the Pennine Way. Many congratulations to Chris & Nicky. They wanted to raise £1000 for cancer research in honour of some very special people. Many thanks to everyone who has supported with a donation or vital moral support. Their just giving page says £925 so please dig as deep as they have to walk all that way and help them reach that very special total.
We are all so proud

Thank you for visiting our Fundraising Page. The money we raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Nicky and I are walking the Pennine way in memory of my mum Cecily Leggett. It was something she would often speak to me about and had hoped that I would walk it with her. Sadly mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and after several years of poor health, she lost her battle and passed away aged 48. The illness unfortunately made the dream of walking the Pennine way impossible. Now many years later we hope to complete the walk my mum was unable to do. In 2022 we completed the first 100 miles over 6 days walking from Edale in Derbyshire to Horton in Ribblesdale in the Yorkshire dales. This year we aim to complete the walk starting from where we finished in 2022. Walking from the Yorkshire dales to Scotland; another 168 miles! Although my mum couldn’t do the walk herself, her memory will be with us all the way. Chris and Nicky

Regulations for 6 monthly flu boosters are back.
And this is why - more outbreaks of flu.

As BEVA(British Equine Veterinary Association) and others have pointed out, the science is very clear that 6-monthly flu vaccination offers superior protection both for the individual and the population and should be something that horse owners should maintain if we want to continue exposing our horses to an increased risk of disease through competition/ horse movements and mixing.

6 monthly flu boosters are always recommended to provide best protection for your horse.

What is equine influenza?
Equine influenza (flu) is highly contagious so will spread rapidly through an unvaccinated population of horses. It does not usually cause long term or fatal illness, but can lead to horses having large amounts of time off work. It also has financial implications in terms of cancellation of events and the cost of treatment. It can also lead to serious complications in very young or old horses.

Lots of cases of equine flu popping up across the UK currently so practice your biosecurity! Check your horses vaccine status

Equine flu is highly contagious and is acquired mainly by the inhalation of the virus, via aerosols, from other infected horses or via virus-containing droplets in the horse’s environment. In short, affected horse’s coughing and spluttering will spread the virus.
Indirect spread is also possible via feed or water buckets, or grooms / handlers / nurses / vets or anyone who has contact with an affected horse. Unlike strangles and some other infections, the flu virus does not linger nor survive for long outside the horse.

The recent heavy rain seems to be a contributory factor so no apologies for simply repeating this information from a few months ago

Acorns warning as deaths reported in the UK this Autumn.

Bumper crop of acorns now

Acorn ingestion may be associated with typhylocolitis leading to diarrhoea, colic and acute renal tubular nephrosis. (colic, diarrhoea, collapse and kidney failure) Recovery is possible in mildly affected cases; more severe cases show hypovolaemia, intractable pain, renal dysfunction and cardiovascular failure, and often succumb to the disease process. Disease is only seen in a small proportion of the population exposed to acorns and there seems to be an increased occurrence in certain years. Further investigation into factors predisposing to disease is required, but limiting exposure to acorns in the autumn seems prudent.

Some horses appear to become addicted to acorns. But remember other parts of the oak tree carry toxic tannin too. Remember good grazing is not enough to prevent acorn ingestion. Best to fence off access.

Helping us stay safe around horses

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is pleased to support a new reporting system to
help monitor horse-related accidents to humans, and how safety equipment
impacts the outcome.
The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) launched an online form
(link below) in November 2021 and it is already generating important
safety data.
"We all accept that horse riding has real dangers attached," explains Dr
Diane Fisher, BETA's Chief Medical Officer. "However using the protection
available correctly can mitigate and minimise these risks."
BETA are asking anyone who is involved in a horse-related accident,
whether while riding or on the ground to use the form to share details of
the incident and any safety equipment being used at the time.
