How is everyone with a kitten or cheeky pet getting on with having a Christmas tree? 😅 Luckily for us we have lots of soft felt decorations so we’ve just skipped the breakables this year 🫣. Our older and much more sensible cat Gwen was watching our naughty toddler kitten very disapprovingly. The tree is also weighed down to try and stop it falling over 😂

Last few days with my pals and what a rollercoaster! Icy cold and many of the pups were not feeling it, myself included as I had tonsillitis, we had quick walks for those who don’t like the cold. When the dogs are happy and safe to walk though, we walk 👍 I brought my beautiful tea flask with me and Maisie and I had a relax together after her morning adventures tuckered her out. Everyone was much happier today in the sunshine, especially me after magic antibiotics 🙌 ❄️ ☀️

Beautiful, fresh and snowy couple of days. All the pups seem to be loving the snow and looking very fashionable in their coats. Maisie and I saved a little fledgling bird today, it was on the ground near the road but seemed unscathed, I wouldn’t have noticed it if Maisie hadn’t taken a curious sniff. We put the little one in a bush for safety. Mickleton and Meon Hill was looking beautiful in the sunshine, I love snow in the sun! ❄️ ☀️

When considering walking your dog in cold weather, there’s a pretty simple rule to live by – if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your dog.

But like humans, every dog is different. Where some dogs seem to be made for snow and wet weather, others can struggle in even the slightest of chills. The vet experts at Joii have given some guidelines to help you decide if you should brave the elements or stay in the warmth.

Just looking at the temperature on the thermometer (or if you’re like us, on your phone’s weather app) isn’t enough, you also need to take into account wind chill, wet conditions (rain or damp ground) and how sunny the day is. If in doubt, keep your walk short or skip it all together if your dog can toilet in the garden instead.

Does your pet’s fur protect them from the cold? ❄️

In most cases, yes! But in really wet and cold weather, if your pet isn't able to keep active or get themselves somewhere warm, their fur coat may not be enough. Like us humans, our pets, though thankfully rarely, can develop a dangerous and potentially deadly condition called hypothermia.

Any pet can become seriously ill if the temperature of their body drops too low, and acting quickly and doing the right thing could save your pet’s life.

Here are some key symptoms to look out for during the winter months! And if you suspect your pet may have hypothermia, it’s important to call your vet straight away and follow their advice ⚠️

[Visual description: Infographic about hypothermia in pets. Signs and symptoms include; shivering, drowsiness, confusion, clumsiness, pale gums and loss of consciousness/collapse. What you should do; 1. Call your vet straight away and follow their advice. 2. Get your pet out of the cold. Take them somewhere warm (not hot) and sheltered. 3. If your pet is awake, try to get them to drink some lukewarm (not hot) water. 4. If your pet is wet, use towels to dry them by rubbing them over. Change the towels when they become damp. 5. Be careful not to heat your pet up too quickly, this can be dangerous. Use blankets and towels under and over them to keep them warm. Using hot water bottles and heat pads will heat them too quickly and may cause burns.]

There are several things to consider when walking dogs in cold weather, so how can you keep your best four legged friend happy this winter?

🔸BEWARE OF POTENTIAL DANGERS ON WALKS🔸

A thick blanket of snow can hide a lot of potentially dangerous areas which may cause harm to your dog if they are off lead.

Ponds, lakes, and streams could also freeze over and may look solid, but the thin ice layer can cover deep and potentially fatal freezing water

For both of these reasons it is a good idea to keep your dog on the lead while out on walks in the freezing weather.

🔹CLEAN UP AND WARM UP WHEN YOU GET HOME🔹

If your usual walking route involves walking on roads, pavements, or paths, then there is a good chance that salt has been spread on them to melt any ice and reduce the risk of anyone slipping and hurting themselves. If your walk involves any of these surfaces then you should rinse your dog’s paws with warm water when you get home, as the salt can cause skin irritation.

Some dogs with longer coats may collect snowballs on their fur as they play and roll in the snow. If this happens to your dog, try your best to dust them off as they collect on your walk, but failing that rinse them off with warm water when you get home to melt them away

🔸CONSIDER INVESTING IN WINTER CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES🔸

Some smaller or short coated dogs feel cold in the winter nip, so it may be a good idea to buy a well fitting coat that will help keep them warm and dry on walks.

Road traffic accidents are common in the winter and there are a number of steps to be safe. Check to make sure that your dog is microchipped and that they are wearing ID tags incase they get lost after dark.

Reflective collars and jackets are a good idea, and there are even some bright LED collars and tags available to help make your dog easier to see by other walkers and road users.

Make sure your dog has a cosy dry space to stay warm when they get home, and if they are damp or wet check to make sure they aren’t getting too chilled as they dry off.

Darker nights mean cats are more at risk of being involved in a road traffic accident during autumn and winter. Here are five tips from our vets to help your cat to stay safe 🐱

[Visual description: Infographic detailing five dark evening safety tips for cats. 1. Be prepared - make sure your cat is microchipped and is covered by pet insurance should anything happen. 2 - Neuter - By neutering your cat they’ll be much less likely to roam in search of a mate or get into fights. 3. Daylight - Keep your cat indoors at night and let them out during daylight hours. To help with this, you can try feeding your cat when it starts to get dark so they’ll come back for the night. 4. The secure outdoors - If you live in a busy area with lots of traffic, consider only letting your cat out into a secure garden or safe outdoor area. 5. Visibility - Reflective collars can help drivers see cats in the dark or in poor light. Choose a break-away style collar which will open if your cat catches it on a fence, branch or other object while they’re out exploring.]

Busy couple of days with these beauties. And I’m still so happy that I’ve gained the trust of a few of my most nervous little friends. Can’t explain how proud it makes me to know they feel safe with me. I feel like telling everyone!! “Guess what, Chelsea came out of hiding for me today!” “How am I? Well Minnie trusted me to but the harness on and have her first walk with me today, so I’m absolutely buzzing!”

Most people would think that’s strange but I think you guys get it 😉 💓💞🌟

Can you spot Choco actually smiling for the photo? She’s so funny. Here are this week’s pup pals so far. We’ve been lucky with the pretty dry weather but somehow it’s still so muddy…?! The dogs have loved sniffing around in the leaves. A few new friends this week to join the crew 💞

Lucky for some, certain dog breeds have naturally long and well insulated coats that help keep them warm when the weather gets tough. Unfortunately, lots of other types of dog are more vulnerable. During winter, small breeds with short coats and toy breeds will struggle to keep warm. However, larger breeds can also get chilly despite their size due to their thin coats.

🐾 Small and short coated dog breeds 🐾
Jack Russels
Poodles
Whippets
Dachshunds
Chihuahuas
Basset Hounds
Yorkshire Terriers

🐾 Large and short coated dog breeds 🐾
Dalmations
Staffies
Greyhounds
Doberman Pinschers

All these breeds are more susceptible to the cold however, any dog will get cold if left in the cold or wet for too long
