‘Tis the season .... of chocolate gifts.
Many of you will be aware of the dangers of pets consuming chocolate. Chocolate is toxic for pets. Unlike us humans, pets cannot break down the caffeine and theobromine chocolate contains. Chocolate can cause diarrhoea, increased heart rate and panting, and in severe cases seizures and cardiac problems. If your pet has consumed chocolate seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Depending on your pet plus the type of chocolate and how much chocolate they have consumed, veterinary intervention may be necessary, each pet is assessed individually.
Last week Coco helped himself to a chocolate cookie topped with a chocolate & hazelnut hippo that wasn’t quite out of his reach. His owners caught him in the act & contacted us immediately. Because of what Coco had eaten plus his health condition, we induced vomiting to remove the toxins. As his owners acted so quickly Coco was on his way back home within an hour of stealing this festive treat. Some pets, again depending on an individual’s case, may require further treatment.
Don’t leave chocolate under the Christmas tree or in easy reach of your pets. Whilst dogs seem the obvious culprits to help themselves, eating chocolate can have similar effects for cats and rabbits too.
Should you have any concerns about your pet during the festive period and we are closed, call our number 01789 299455 and you will be transferred to the caring team at The Willows. The link below is for our opening hours.
