Dogs, much like humans, communicate through a range of signals. Often, we only realise something is wrong when our dogs start behaving in ways that are impossible to ignore. However, much like human communication, many messages are conveyed long before the situation escalates. Consider a conversatio...

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)
The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.
During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.
The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.
So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.
As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.
If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.
By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

Today my husband and I with our two guide dogs had another near miss with an electric car. We were crossing a side road and it came in off the main road and passed very close in front of us. If it’d been a petrol or diesel engine, or if it’d had a sound emitter fitted, we’d have heard it, but, apart from the sound of the tyres on the road, it was virtually silent.
I am a confident guide dog handler but I can honestly say that silent electric vehicles scare me. I fear that it will take serious injury to a blind person, or even worse, death, before any meaningful legislation is put into place. If it happens to me or someone that I care about, I’ll be in court and I won’t rest until we have justice.
So please, if you drive an electric vehicle, switch on your sound emitter. After all, you wouldn’t drive at night without your lights on, it’s the same thing.
Many people will like this post but please don’t. I ask anyone who would have hit the like button to please hit the share button instead and pass this far and wide. I fear for our lives and those of these two amazing dogs.❤️

Come and join us at Woofy’s Dog Field on Sunday for boundary training.
Boundary training helps with many real life situations.
It teaches your dog a default stay, without you becoming a nag…. “stay, stay, stay” while walking backwards very slowly!
🐾 It stops your dogs jumping out the car or running out the door until you say.
🐩 It helps with vets and grooming visits,
🦮 It helps with loose lead and recall!

Barney came for a 121 today. His guardians won a free lesson in a raffle.
Barney is 6 months old and hitting adolescence. We spoke about what this means and what to expect.
Relationship building is one of the most important concepts during this time as they like to push your buttons!
We looked at topping up loose lead, and playing proximity games, and generally having fun!

This is Pippin, we have had two sessions with him. He is reactive outside of the house.
So session one was calmness, we looked at, how much rest he was getting and the things that fill his emotional bucket throughout the day and made some changes 😊
Session two was building confidence & optimism with some novelty.
His guardians have got down to business and are working on the games. This is fun as well as working on pippins missing skills.

Just a dog.
From time to time people tell me “chill out, it’s just a dog” or “it’s a lot of money just for a dog.” They don't understand the distance traveled, the time invested, or the costs incurred by "just a dog".
Some of my proudest moments have occurred with “just a dog.”
Many hours have passed being my only company "just a dog", but not for one moment did I feel despised. Some of my saddest moments have been because of “just a dog,” and on those gray days, the gentle touch of “just a Dog” gave me comfort and the reason to get through the day.
If you also think “it’s just a dog”, then you’ll probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
For "just a dog" I will get up early, take long walks and look forward to the future. So for me and people like me, it’s not “just a dog,” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the memories of the past, and the absolute joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out the good in me and takes my thoughts away from myself and daily worries.
I hope one day they can understand that it’s not “just a dog”, but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a human.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog”, just smile because they “just don’t get it”.

Katherine and Candy have the best partnership. We don’t teach agility but we support and work on specific skills to enable Katherine teach Candy on polishing up her agility skills. “I just want to say a massive thank you for all your patience with us from a pup who a year ago couldn’t even handle training to this now is so unreal and I couldn’t of done it without both of you”
This is Wurzel, I like to describe him as horizontal 😂😂. Wurzel favourite thing to do is chill! Wurzel came to our 6 week foundation course, and it wasn’t until week 6 that we found something that Wurzel liked and we got him moving!! To the majority of people Wurzel is the perfect dog, and for the most part he is. But, he does struggle with disengagement! So the plan for them is to work on the concept of disengagement and to get Wurzel moving.
Lead work
Great lead work with Jax today. I have only ever trained loose lead with a 2 point harness and double ended lead. From this I have then, in some cases, moved to collar and lead, BUT only once they have a reliable loose lead. By using these tools, it gives you flexibility to extend lead, use in one hand, or clipped just to the back or front. Jax is only 6 months old, he is a collie x Labrador. Look at him and his owner working beautifully together. 🐾🐕🦮🐾
Fantastic session with Jax today. disengagement and proximity training, along with putting “sniffing” on command. 🐾🐕🦮

Retrieve
Goose gets very excited when we use an object to retrieve and struggles with the whole process. I’ve broken the behaviours down and start by using food. I start with where I want him to be, so in this case sat nicely by my left side. I then throw food out and on his return I want him in front of me in a sit position. I reward him with a high value reward. Charlie came to join us which I used to my advantage and continued my training with a distraction!
We restarted foundation levels of retrieve today. Part of our Gundog program. No we aren’t traditional gundog trainers we are game based trainers. 😊
Do your dogs know how to “switch off” are you able to have calmness in your home. Or do your dogs still demand walks, even when they are unable to, for the sake of their health?? I have a range of breeds here with 2 high energy dogs a 15 month working cocker spaniel and a 3 year old Cockapoo, my old boy is 11 years old and happy sleeping regardless and the other 2 are boarders. 4.5 year old lively cavachon and a 3 year old shih tzu. I get told all the time but my dog is high energy, mine “needs” to have a good run every single day! My dogs have been inside, since Sunday, they do have access to a shaded garden. No outside walks and even, have had no intense training! They aren’t bouncing off the walls and they aren’t “demanding” any walks!! So ask yourself “ are your dogs calm and chilled on this rather hot day 🐶 🥵 🐕🦺🥵🦮🥵” If the answer is no then get in touch today for us to help you 😊
A little video from our tricks class tonight. We are teaching the foundations of how to ride a skateboard 😊
Part 2, changed the picture for Billy, I asked for down when he was in middle, that he found hard, and to stay on boundary after a slightly high arousal game. Both dogs are panting after just 10 mins of low level games. Charlie currently is recovering from discomfort in his back so low level games as he has been on rest for a few days xx
Boundary training with multi dogs. Charlie has done very little boundary training, which is why I was feeding a lot more than Billy. I’m working on Billy staying on his boundary when it’s not his turn, and when we have finished a short session to stay in his bed. I am now at the stage where I put commands on to tell my dogs what want, but this only happens once the behaviour has been taught! This short session of just 10 mins has covered boundary/crate training, calmness, arousal up/down, are you listening, impulse control, proximity. 🐶❤️🐶❤️🐶❤️🐶
The beautiful Diesel doing some boundary training. Diesel has a brother Thor, we have had a few sessions, both boys are coming along nicely. Our main goals are, loose lead walking and walking together! Diesel has a little separation anxiety so we are working on that too. They are both 7/8 months old, and adolescence has kicked in. We had to make some drastic changes as the boys started to behave inappropriately with each other! A few changes to the set up in the house and the training regime and calmness has resumed! Don’t forget anything can be a boundary!
