We have a volunteer day coming up this Saturday - come along and see what’s happening on the farm.

We plan to cut back some hedges, tidy up the bee garden, feed our new hive of bees with some biodynamic feed, measure up our garden zone to get some designs made, and general maintenance of the farm.

We look forward to seeing you. Please message me if you have any questions.

Find out why we’re planting fruit trees, hedges, shelterbelts, coppices and more on the farm. The tour will focus on Oakbrook Orchard, but also take in other new plantings across the farm, including trees planted in the last two years for woodchip, forage, basketry and shelter. Learn about the benefits of trees to the cattle, the vegetables, the soil and wildlife. Hear about some of the challenges we’ve encountered and see some of the solutions we’re working on.

This is a free tour offered as part of the national Agroforestry Open Weekend. Check out the wider event and the other 40-plus farms taking part here.

Everyone welcome. You’ll need to be able to manage farm tracks, grassy fields and some steep slopes. Kids are welcome to play in our Haven Field, with adult supervision.

Please book a free place via our eventbrite page here.

Our friends and neighbours at Good Small Farms, literally just over the road, are also taking part in the event and are holding an open day on the same Sunday with food, kids’ activities, and a farm tour. Make a day of it!

Last Wednesday we had a visioning day at the farm with all of the tenants. It was a very positive meeting recognising how far the farm has come over the last few years and sharing our collective visions for the future of the farm.

THE TWENTY TREES CHALLENGE 🌳🌳🌳

This Sunday 11 am - 3 pm Jessie from Oakbrook Orchard is planting 20 trees. Everyone is welcome. If you want to come please contact Jessie, to give her an idea of numbers.

Email Jessie at: [email protected]

Below is more information about the event:

Oakbrook Orchard

We are very grateful to have funding from the Tree Council to plant and guard another 20 trees in the orchard this spring. Now we need to get those trees planted… so, here’s the Twenty Trees Challenge!

With enough hands on deck I reckon we can plant, guard and even mulch all 20 new trees in one short volunteer day. In the past we’ve only managed maximum 15 trees in a day. But the new system of flying cactus guards is much quicker to install than the double guards, and this year all our trees are only one year old, so they have smaller roots, meaning smaller holes to dig.

I already have the markers in place to show where the trees need to go, and the trees are, of course, already on site in our little nursery. Before the day of the challenge, I’ll lay out guards and stakes next to each tree planting spot. So all we have to do on the grand day is crack on with the planting.

Are you up for the challenge?

Everyone is welcome – no experience necessary. Please come and join for as long or as little as you like, and take it at any pace that works for you. Kids are welcome, but you must take full responsibility for any children you bring with you.

Do wrap up warm, bring snacks, picnic and drinks if you think you’ll need them, and bear in mind that the orchard site is pretty exposed. I’ll do my best to provide some flapjacks to keep us fuelled up.

We generally have all the tools we need on site, but you might want to bring your own work gloves.

It’s helpful if you can text or email to let me know you’re coming so I have a rough idea of numbers. If you need directions, have any questions, or want to check we’re there on the day if the weather is dodgy, please do get in touch.

17/01/2024

Starting 3nd Feb we will be commencing a series of monthly workshops designed by our resident apiarist Christian Gruetzmacher who has 18 years experience in holistic bee keeping. He facilitates individuals and groups in developing their own genuine relationship to the insect world and honey bees.

During these 6 initial sessions we will cover wholistic bee biology, allowing us to understand honey bee colonies as a whole, their connection with the rest of the environment as well as their yearly cycles and internal organisation.

We will look at 25,000 years of documented apiculture and the spiritual, cultural and practical traditions of how people around the world relate to the honey bee. Comparing the various modern conventional and alternative hive designs in relation to our local environment and our individual aims participants will be enabled to make an informed choice about their own way of relating to and working with bees.

This course is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. It is open to anyone with an interest with bees whether you are looking for artistic inspiration, environmental activism, sustainable bee keeping or simply wanting to learn about bees.
Suggested donation of £10-£15 per session but please attend for free if finances are a barrier.

Sessions will be held in the Oakbrook Barn Garden room close by our Bee Observatory where we can observe undisturbed honey bee colonies throughout the season with out any need for protective clothing
The dates are Saturdays 3rd Feb, 2nd March, 6th April, 4th May, 1st June and 6th July from 2-3pm.

Those wishing to volunteer practically on our bee garden are welcome to join the earlier volunteering sessions from 11am-2pm on the same dates before joining the workshop.

Oakbrook Community Farm

This 41-acre (17- hectare) farm, just outside Stroud, was purchased by the community through the Biodynamic Land Trust in November 2015. Previously known as Lot 3, Hammonds Farm, the community renamed it Oakbrook Farm, inspired by the land’s beautiful spring-sourced, oak-lined brook. The farm is Demeter certified organic and in conversion to biodynamic.

The farm is currently home to a cluster of farm enterprises:

STROUD MICRO DAIRY

Stroud Micro Dairy, run by farmer, Kees Frederiks, produces raw milk, kefir, yogurt and cheese for the people of Stroud thanks to its Holstein-Jersey cows. Following its establishment in March 2017, Stroud Micro Dairy now farms 36 hectares with Oakbrook Farm’s 13 hectares at its core.
