Keep your small furry friends cool in the heat! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿน๐Ÿฆ Rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds can struggle with high temperatures. Bring them indoors, ensure they're out of direct sunlight, and provide a cool surface like tiles for them to walk on. Wet towels over their cage and a wrapped frozen water bottle can make a big difference. Help your cat beat the heat with these easy tips! ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ˜บ Freeze a water bottle wrapped in a towel for their bed, ensure they have shade, especially during peak hours, and keep the air circulating with a fan. Extra water bowls around the house are a must, and wide-brimmed metal, ceramic, or glass bowls are ideal. Some cats even enjoy a water fountain! ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿก

Routine vaccinations will prevent your pet becoming infected by common infectious diseases. For all species, Rabies vaccines are only required for travel abroad as the UK is Rabies free.

Dogs are routinely vaccinated against:

- Parvovirus
- Distemper
- Leptospirosis
Infectious canine hepatitis
Puppies require two injections 4 weeks apart ideally at 8 and 12 weeks of age, although they can be
vaccinated from 6 weeks of age.

Your dog should then receive an annual booster vaccination. This is also a good opportunity for us to give your dog a thorough health check.

If your dog has not received a vaccination for over 15 months, then we advise your dog has a repeat course of two vaccinations given four weeks apart.

Kennel cough is an additional vaccination that covers against Bordetella and Parainfluenza which is often advised should your dog have regular contact with others. Many boarding kennels will insist that your dog has received the vaccination before boarding. This vaccine should be given 3 weeks before the expected exposure to kennel cough.

Cats are vaccinated against:

- Feline flu
- Feline enteritis

We can also vaccinate against feline leukaemia virus. This is particularly recommended if you live in a built up area where your cat may be in contact with lots of other cats.

Kittens are vaccinated at 9 and 12 weeks, followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter.

If your cat hasnโ€™t received a vaccination for over 18 months we would advise giving a course of two vaccinations, three weeks apart.

Rabbits can be vaccinated against two diseases:

- Myxomatosis
- Viral Haemorrhagic Disease

The vaccine we routinely use will provide immunity against both diseases for one year. Young rabbits require just one vaccination, with an annual booster to maintain protection.

If you have any concerns with preventative health for your rabbit, or with VHD then please call the clinic on 01258 472314.

Please be prepared for this bridge closure on Friday 31st May, if you have an appointment at Sturminster Newton on this day please plan a different route into town.

Sturminster Bridge will be closed on Friday 31st May.
Those driving over the bridge in/out of the Town will see some white road markings of defects that need to be fixed. To minimise disruption the team will repair these on the 31st of May which falls in Half Term. The road will close from about 9.30am and it is hoped the work will only take half a day, but to be safe - allow for the road to be closed until later in the afternoon. It's a nuisance - but it needs to happen.

โญ Join us to celebrate !

Every year during the month of May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), proudly spearheaded by the BVNA.

In 2024, we celebrate 20 years since the campaign began โ€“ from its early beginnings as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Day from 2004, and since 2012 weโ€™ve been campaigning for the whole month.

This year, the campaign theme is โ€˜Progressionโ€™ โ€“ with the aim of highlighting the diverse range of skills, abilities and career pathways of veterinary nurses. Weโ€™ll also be raising awareness amongst the public about why protecting the โ€˜veterinary nurseโ€™ title is so crucial.

To find out how you can get involved follow this link -https://bvna.org.uk/project/vnam-2024/

As part of our Thriving in Practice and Sustainability projects we wanted to show staff that commuting to work was possible and incredibly good for our wellbeing!
Last Saturday 20 of the Friars Moor team cycled and walked from our branch in Sturminster to our branch in Blandford.
The weather was truly with us and we made our way along the trailway to Bere Marsh farm for coffee and cakes at the Buzz cafe (Black Cat Catering), and then continued on to the Yellow Bus Project (The Big Yellow Bus Garden Project) where we could marvel at the beauty of the gardens and well-being areas, also to thank Paul for allowing us to borrow some bikes for our ride! From here we continued to the The White Horse Inn, Stourpaine for a quick beverage and a spot of respite, and then did the final push over to Blandford ending up at our practice for end-of-day coffee and some cake.

(Yes we had double coffee and cake, we deserved it).

It was a wonderful afternoon and great team effort!

09/04/2024

Handling and grooming your puppy regularly is essential for their well-being and your bond with them. Here's why:

Monitoring Health: By running your hands over your puppy's body regularly, you can detect any unusual lumps or bumps that may indicate health issues. Early detection can lead to timely veterinary intervention, which is crucial for their health and well-being.

Foot Handling: Many dogs are sensitive about having their feet touched. By getting your puppy accustomed to having their feet handled from an early age, you reduce their stress and make it easier to examine their feet in situations such as injuries, thorns, or when clipping their claws.

Daily Grooming: Introducing your puppy to daily grooming routines early on helps them become accustomed to it as a normal part of their life. Initially, keep grooming sessions short and use positive reinforcement, like treats, to make it a positive experience. Over time, grooming becomes a bonding activity that also allows you to assert gentle authority over your pet.

Bonding Opportunity: Grooming and handling provide an excellent opportunity to bond with your puppy. It allows you to spend quality time together while also reinforcing your position as a caregiver and leader in their eyes.

Preventative Care: Regular grooming not only keeps your puppy's coat clean and healthy but also helps prevent issues like matting and skin infections. It's an essential aspect of their overall care routine.

By incorporating these practices into your puppy's daily routine, you not only ensure their physical well-being but also strengthen the bond between you and your furry friend. Remember to approach grooming and handling with patience, consistency, and plenty of positive reinforcement to make it an enjoyable experience for both of you.
