Kakapo are avid walkers, wandering on strong legs for miles at a time and hiking up mountains to find mates. But the world’s heaviest parrot is ground dwelling, which puts it at risk from introduced predators. But, conservationists are now embarking on a project to return the Kakapo back to one of New Zealand’s main islands into a purpose built predator free reserve.

Eb Cravens has long counselled prospective psittacine buyers to not become overly attached to the kind of parrot pet they decide to buy. Do your homework, but remain unbiased he says. With hurricanes, Helene and Milton, making landfall in Florida recently, we are reminded of the importance of having an evacuation plan in place for our feathered family members. In the UK, we are perhaps a little complacent in the knowledge that we are unlikely to experience a hurricane, tornado or other extreme weather event such as those we frequently see in other parts of the world. However, with changing weather patterns, flooding, fires and other potentially threatening disasters, it is a good idea to have in place an evacuation plan.
