Happy 🐕 🐶 🐾 NATIONAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER DAY 🐾 🐶 🐕

Here at King's Road, we've had many beautiful Goldie's coming trotting through our doors. We've given them their puppy courses of vaccinations, we've treated their ailments, we've delivered their litters of puppies, we've nursed them back to health and sadly, we've helped them over the rainbow bridge when they've needed it the most.

Below is Ellie, our wonderful owner Wendy's three year old Retriever. Ellie came to us with her breeder when she was mere weeks old as she was regurgitating all of her food and sadly wasn't growing as well as her siblings. After a few x-rays and tests, it was confirmed Ellie had a condition known as megaesophagus.

Normally when a dog swallows, a muscular tube called the oesophagus moves the food from their mouth to their stomach to be digested. In megaesophagus, dogs are unable to swallow food normally because their oesophagus lacks the muscular tone and motility needed to move food and water. Instead, their oesophagus dilates and food backs up, causing them to regurgitate the meal.

Wendy offered to take Ellie on and perform tube feeds directly into her stomach bypassing her oesophagus. After weeks of night feeds by Wendy and her family, and even a Christmas party team effort where Ellie joined us, Ellie!began to catch up to her siblings and it was decided she would become a full time member of the Rowntree family!

So, there's just one short story on why we love our golden retrievers.

Why not share a photo of your own retrievers and tell us what makes them so special to you?

❄️ 🌨️ ☃️ OH BABY, ITS COLD OUTSIDE ☃️ ❄️ 🌨️ ❄️

With the icey weather we've had this week, and temperatures set to stay cold over the weekend, we wanted to give you some top tips for your pooch's paws!

Did you know that the salt and grit used for de-icing roads can pose risks to a dog’s paws? It can irritate their paw pads and cause sore paws, redness, peeling and cracking 🥶.

If dogs try and lick their paws after being outside, they can invest the nasty chemicals in the grit which can cause an upset stomach, or even be toxic 🤢

Grit found on the roads cause abrasions on paws which increasing the chance of infection.

👂 SO HOW CAN YOU PREVENT ANY HARM TO YOUR DOG? 👂

❄️ Inspect your dogs paws after every trip outside, look for any snow/ice between the paw pads, any cuts, redness or sores.

❄️ Use doggy boots to protect paws from the salt and grit on the roads and paths.

❄️ Apply a paw wax or balm before walks to create a protective barrier which can then be wiped off as soon as you get home.

❄️ Rinse and wipe your dog’s paws with warm water and a soft cloth after walks to remove any grit or salt.

❄️ Check paws regularly for cuts or signs of irritation, if you have any concerns, contact us for advice!

❄️ Trim fur between paw pads to prevent ice and grit accumulation 🐾

❄️ 🌨 ☃️ DID SOME BUNNY ORDER SOME SNOW? ☃️ 🌨 ❄️

We are sure we don't need to point out that the temperatures have really dropped this week!

Of course, we have felt the difference ourselves and I'm sure we have all turned the heating up, put our dressing gowns on, even had ourselves one extra cuppa to compensate!

But what about some of our outdoor pets, are there any extra precautions we need to take to ensure they keep nice and warm?

❄️ Shelter their houses away from the elements, such as tucking them in corners, behind walls etc to avoid harsh winds.

🌨 Add lots of extra bedding to keep them warm!

☃️ Regularly check their water to ensure that it hasn’t frozen, if it is, replace it with fresh water.

❄️ Feed rabbits and guinea pigs extra good quality hay, extra calories in board will help to keep them nice and toasty!

🌨 Keep rabbits and guinea pigs together witb their companions. Firstly, they do need companions to keep them company, but in cold weather they also have an added benefit by helping to keep each other warm by huddling up!

☃️ If you are considering bringing your small furry pets inside for winter, this needs to be done gradually. The change in temperature can be difficult for small furries to adjust to and the cause more harm than good if done too suddenly. Extra caution should also be taken as the new environment, smells, sounds can also cause extra stress. Minimising stress during a transition like this is vital.

💔💔💔 ANNIE 💔💔💔

Sadly, a few weeks ago we had to make the very difficult decision to let the princess of the practice go to sleep for the final time. Annie had been facing some health issues throughout this year and eventually the time came that we had to make the call to let her go.

Annie has been with us since almost the very start! She arrived at the practice in 2012 shortly after we opened, and after an unsuccessful search for her owners, it was decided that she would stay. We then learned that she wasn't alone, but with a litter of kittens on the way! (Scroll to see the picture of her beautiful babies).

Over the years Annie has become a celebrity at Kings Road. We have had warning signs on reception to tell clients to beware of the feisty ginger cat, she has had special signs in our cat waiting room to let everyone know she has her own seat reserved, should she wish to sleep there! She has kept staff and clients in check, even having quite a few people scared of her over the years for her uncanny ability to lure you to a false sense of security with allowing a chin scratch, only to turn around and swipe you a second later!

Nevertheless, she was an absolute sweetheart. She would sit and cry at your feet to be picked up for a cuddle, she would have our reception staff wrapped round her little finger ready for a handful of dreamies at any given opportunity and would know how to work a staff room full of people at lunch time hoping for a share of someone's tuna!

She really was the most wonderful cat, and we all miss her so deeply already. Kings Road Vets really isn't the same without her 💔

Please be careful with Christmas cake around dogs because it can be dangerous for them to eat:
Raisins and sultanas: Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, and mince pies often contain raisins and sultanas, which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Even a small amount can make a dog very sick. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and drinking more. If you think your dog has eaten raisins or sultanas, you should seek prompt treatment from a vet.
