❤️ ❤️ ❤️ A BEAUTIFUL BOX OF BABIES ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Yesterday this beautiful litter of British Blue kittens came to visit us for the second time, to have their last kitten vaccines.

As you can imagine, they absolutely stole the show in the waiting room. Just look at them working the camera out there!

They were all beautiful, brave babies and had lots of cuddles from all of the team during their visit.

We really do have the best jobs!

Today is 🐈‍⬛️ NATIONAL BLACK CAT APPRECIATION DAY 🐈‍⬛️

Did you know that statistically, black cats and kittens are the most difficult coloured cats to rehome and often spend the longest in shelters?

The exact reason why isn't known, but many people expect this is due to an age old myth that black cats are unlucky. Of course, there are absolutely no grounds to this myth, and it is nothing more than an old wives tale, but sadly lots of black cats still end up on the streets or sat in shelters waiting the longest times for a new home.

Well, National Black Cat Appreciation Day is here to put those rumours to bed and remind everyone just how fabulous these felines are!

Our staff have A LOT of cats. Between our 28 staff, we actually have 22 cats! And of those 22 cats are 10 black/black and white cats!

So you see, we really do believe that black cats are the best!

In honour of such a wonderful day, instead of sharing our own black cats with you, we thought we would share an old picture of a familiar face to a lot of you, Sir Bruce, King's Road Vets former practice cat-ager.
This Halloween will mark 8 years since we lost our handsome front of house resident, and we still miss his cheeky face every single day.

So, why not share with us below your own handsome black felines and tell us what makes them so great!

Never leave your dog in a parked car on a warm day. Dogs mainly control their body temperature by panting. When a dog is very hot, panting isn't enough to stop them from overheating. In warm weather, the temperature inside a parked car even with windows left open can climb rapidly and will be much higher than outside of the vehicle.

🌟 🌟 🌟 BEST PATIENT NAME (MAYBE EVER!) 🌟 🌟 🌟

Last week, we were joined by the beautiful girl for a routine procedure. She had the sweetest nature, and of course, we were all smitten!

However, she had one extra trick up her sleeve to make sure she really won us all over, and that was her name!

So, we thought we would challenge you all to see if you can guess this fabulous little girl's name?

This is a bit of a tough challenge, as unless you know the beautiful pooch in question, it's very unlikely anyone will guess this!

But in the name of good fun, on your marks, get set, go!

JUST A REMINDER, TO ALL DOG OWNERS.

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the UK die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

It seems summer is finally starting to arrive in the UK!

Make sure to take extra care with all of your pets in the heat. Make sure they've always got fresh water access at all times.

Aim to walk dogs first thing in the morning and last thing at night, avoiding the hottest times of the day!

Remember, no dog has ever died from missing a walk. Plenty of dogs have died from a walk in the heat, though!

Well thats over for 2024!

❤️ We hope you enjoyed hearing a little about what our nurses get up to behind the scenes. We've really only scratched the surface of a day in the life of a vet nurse, and it's hard to cover everything because every day in Veterinary practice is so different we can never predict what we will be doing next!

🤗 One job that is a constant with Vet Nurses around the world, especially here at King's Road, and is even a clichè for nurses, is to give our patients cuddles.

❤️ Of course, there are more exciting jobs, some maybe more skilled jobs, some more time consuming jobs, some dirtier jobs and even some more dangerous jobs!
But giving our patients love and comfort when they are unwell, or even just in for routine procedures, is by far one of the most important jobs of Nurses. It is important because if patients feel calm in practice, they actually don't mind visiting us! If the feel loved, they can even start to feel better even quicker! At times when they are sadly coming to the end of their lives, it can provide them with comfort. It also helps put your minds, our wonderful patients owners, at rest, knowing we love your pets just like our own and we look after them for you when you aren't there.

🥰 So we just want to say thank you once again yo our wonderful team of nurses and hope that you can see a bit of what they get up to each day for your pets!

Thank you to our team, (from top left to right) Natalie L, Natalie E, Alex, Amy, Marty, Emily, Rhianne, Emma, Claire and Sophie 😊

More on what Vet Nurses do for

🔬 LABORATORY 🔬

Did you know, when you drop off a urine sample, bring your pet for a blood sample, have a swab taken from your pet and so on, it is quite often a nurse who actually prepares and analyses the sample?

Veterinary Nurses run our in house laboratory, and they also are in charge of our external laboratory samples that get packaged and sent for further testing.

Their role in our in house laboratory includes, but is not limited to:

🩸 Running blood samples on our in-house machines, to include taking blood samples, preparing samples appropriately, making blood smears, maintaining the laboratory machines and ordering all necessary laboratory equipment etc.

🚽 Taking urine samples, preparing samples for analysis, evaluating urine samples and reporting results to the Veterinary Surgeon.

🦠 Taking skin and fur samples to evaluate for ectoparasites such as demodex, fleas, chyletiella, scabies etc. This includes taking samples from the patient, preparing the slides, examining the slides under a microscope and reporting results to the Veterinary Surgeon.

💩 Preparing and examining faecal samples to test for worms and giardia on our in-house laboratory equipment. Further testing is provided by our external laboratory for further diseases. It's a really glamorous side to the job!

🥼 Preparing biopsy samples taken from the skin, lympnodes etc, such as "fine needle aspirates" taken by the Veterinary Surgeon. These samples are usually prepared on a microscope slide, stained using special stain to highlight specific cells in order to make accurate diagnoses.

Our Nurses also maintain our lab equipment by running regular quality checks, cleaning the equipment regularly and ordering equipment to keep our machines running.

Running an in-house laboratory is not easy work. It involves skill, a good level of understanding of the requirements and workings of your practice, teamed with a technical skill of how to prepare and analyse laboratory samples.

Again, these are behind-the-scenes tasks that go unnoticed by most, but ones that are noticed and appreciated by the rest of our staff.

Below, our wonderful RVN Sophie prepares to run a urine sample for one of our patients 😊

So, what else do Veterinary Nurses do behind the scenes?

💉🩸 PHLEBOTOMY 🩸💉

Did you know that when your pet is taken "through the back" for a blood sample, a Veterinary Nurse is almost always involved?

Sometimes this can be to hold your pet and "raise the vein", but just as often it can be to actually take the sample themselves.

Under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons act, our Surgeons are able to delegate tasks such as taking intravenous blood samples. This means this task is only able to be carried out by an RVN (registered veterinary nurse) or SVN (student veterinary nurse) under the direction of a veterinary surgeon.

The procedure includes:

🩸 Preparing the area the sample will be taken from aseptically, most commonly the front leg (cephalic vein) or neck (jugular vein). This includes removing the hair from the area and cleaning the skin with antimicrobial solution to reduce risk of introducing infection into the vein.

💉 Preparing appropriate syringes and needles for the sample aseptically.

🧪 Preparing appropriate tubes for the sample. All tests require samples to be stored in different tubes that contain varying anticoagulants that prevent the blood from clotting. Some tests also require samples to be put in plain tubes that allow the blood to clot.

🩸 Next, the nurse would ask their assistant to "raise the vein", making it often visible and palpable under the skin to achieve safe and successful venepuncture. They would feel the area to locate the vein under the skin and insert the needle. The needle usually runs almost directly under the surface of the skin into the vein. Next, they would draw the syringe back to fill with sufficient sample.

🧪 The sample would then be dispensed into the appropriate tubes ready to be run either in our internal laboratory or to be packaged and sent to our external laboratory for further testing. The assistance helping hold your pet would apply pressure to the site of venepuncture to prevent any haemorrhage or subsequent bruising.

Below, RVN Amy taking a larger volume of blood from one of our lovely patient's jugular veins. His blood was used to create his own eye drops to help heal his eye ulcer!
Ringo has had this procedure done several times so is wonderfully well behaved for his sampling!
