Which is the right dog for you?
Further to my previous post “Are you ready for a dog”, I wanted to post on what breed/type could be right for you?

Two breeds that are great for first time owners and which I believe are great family dogs are Greyhounds (or other sighthounds such as Whippets or Lurchers) and show line/pet labradors (not working lines!)

Sighthounds are usually the perfect mix of chilled at home and lots of fun out on walks. *Ensure you do early recall and impulse control training with Sighthounds as their prey drive is strong. Labradors are real foodies so are usually very easy to train and great with the family.

For more experienced owners it can be just as exciting to research our many UK charities and rehoming centres to find your furry partner. You will find mixed breeds and varying ages at affordable prices, plus knowing you are giving a loving home to a pup who needs it.

The British Kennel Club is a great place to start researching on breeds or the Dog’s Trust Charity

See my previous post “Are you ready for a dog?” for things to consider before getting a dog.

A visit to the vets, which for some of our pups can be a stressful event.
My boy Max isn’t a fan of these outings, so in this video you will see me doing positive association training around “look” and “down” commands, praised with a small treat. You can try similar exercises to help prevent negative associations or to help your dog re-build a positive association.

Are you ready for a dog?
Adding a 4 legged member to your family is a big decision to make. I wanted to share with you my main questions to consider before taking that step.
If you are in doubt with any of these questions perhaps you're not quite ready to commit to giving a dog a home and need to reconsider.
How much time can you give to exercising daily?
Will you invest in training at the beginning of the journey?
Will you continue with training?
How long each day will you need to leave them?
Who else is in the family and are they on board with the decision?
Do you have children in the home, this needs careful consideration?
Do you have other pets and will they need careful introduction?
What type of dog do you want? Breed, age, rescue?
What space at home and in the garden can you provide?
What weekly/monthly budget have you considered in keeping your pooch?(insurance, food, equipment, flea and wormer, vaccinations, training other vet bills)

Please do your research on the positives and negatives to owning a dog so you have a long and happy relationship.
