The Paw Club

The Paw Club We offer home boarding for small and medium dogs. We also run puppy classes in Curdworth. We are your local pet sitting service!

A cosy alternative to boarding kennels. We offer one to one care for your dog for the duration of your holiday. We have host families who are happy to look after your dog in the comfort of their own home. Your dog will be happy and relaxed, curled up on the hosts sofa while you enjoy your holiday. If you are interested in becoming a dog sitter, please contact me for an informal chat. It is such a

rewarding experience, you get to enjoy the company of a dog without the responsibility of owning one and paying for the vet bills, food etc. You work at times that suit you or if you own your own dog then you are providing a playmate and this can be beneficial to you, your dog and the dog you are boarding.

My heart breaks.

We are reeling here at Spaniel Aid HQ. We expected January to be busy, but no one predicted 197 requests to surrender a dog to us, including 11 pairs. After follow up calls, 109 of those requests resulted in us agreeing to accept the dog. This doesnā€™t include strays or returning dogs.

By the time Spaniel Aid turns 10 on the 1st March, we will be very close to reaching 5,000 dogs taken in for rehoming. But they have never come in at the rate they are now.

Speak to any other rescue and they will tell you the same: owner surrenders are at an all time high. The waiting list for dogs to go into the major charities is months long. For dogs with issues, demand for rehoming is outstripping the available supply of homes. We have never been more needed, but we take no joy in it.

Why is it so bad? The cost of living crisis continues to hit hard, making it difficult for people to afford the time and money to care for a dog. Indiscriminate breeding, especially during lockdown, is still having an impact: dogs aged between four and five are still arriving in disproportionately high numbers. It remains too easy to acquire a dog without being fully prepared for the commitment. Too many people fail to do their research about the breed characteristics. And dogs are increasing treated as commodities, a new lifestyle accessory to be given to charity when it no longer suits.

At Spaniel Aid we have always taken a non-judgemental approach to owner surrenders. We know that life sometimes brings surprises that no one anticipated, and we are here to help you find the right home for your dog, if yours is no longer the best place for them.

But if you are thinking of getting a dog, remember, dog ownership is hard. You have to go out in all weathers, training is time consuming and demanding, dogs bark, get sick, chew stuff, and yes, they sometimes bite the hand that feeds them. You have to change your life to accommodate a dog, different holidays, days out, nightlife, even jobs. You have to accept that bringing a baby into a home with a dog carries the risk that the dog will not be able to cope.

Is it worth it? Of course it is. Dogs give back so much more than they take. We are all dog lovers or we wouldnā€™t be here. We will continue to work silly hours, unpaid, to find these dogs the very best homes. And there are thousands of great homes out there. And we will continue to shed tears for the ones to whom we have to say no, sorry, we have no room.

Why do dogs eat grass ?

Many dog owners worry that their pet eats grass to make themselves sick to get rid of something theyā€™ve eaten, or because theyā€™re feeling under the weather.

Others think that eating grass is a sign that their dog is lacking in some nutrients. But studies have shown that none of these longstanding beliefs can be proven.

In fact, itā€™s far more likely that dogs eat grass because it tastes nice, particularly in the spring and summer months when itā€™s green and fresh.

There shouldnā€™t be any need to worry about this if the habit doesnā€™t become excessive.

Dog owners commonly think that grass eating in their pets is a sign of illness, this is often not the case. However, if your dog is repeatedly vomiting up grass and/or not eating their normal food, then do consult your vet.

But itā€™s more than likely to be because it is tasty for them and is, therefore, no cause for concern.

Be sure that the grass theyā€™re munching on isnā€™t sprayed with any harmful chemicals.

In some cases, grass-eating might be linked to boredom so make sure your pet has plenty of enrichment through exercise and play.

If a dog is hungry, they will eat grass to fill themselves up, give your dog lots of vegetables to bulk out their food, if they like eating grass, then they will love chomping on a whole carrot.

Ensure your dog has a high protein diet.

Introduce eggs to your dogs diet, dogs who regularly eat eggs ā€“ either raw, boiled hard and serve in the shell, or in the form of a poached egg or scrambled eggs ā€“ these dogs have lovely shiny coats and a waggy tail !

Mascara warning............

Just saw this on another post - it melts my heart ā¤

Yesterday, I adopted the oldest, sickest, and most broken dog at the shelter. Iā€™ll never forget the look in his eyes. When I stepped into his cage, he didnā€™t even glance upā€”he was so used to being overlooked. Curled up in the corner, he had already accepted his fate.

The volunteer kept asking me, ā€œAre you sure about this one? Are you sure?ā€

Without hesitation, I said, ā€œYES! This is my dog.ā€ As the cage opened, three other animals tumbled out, but I went straight to him. Suddenly, he looked up at me as if he were seeing an angel. I wrapped him in my arms and whispered, ā€œYouā€™re going to be happy again.ā€

He fell asleep in my lapā€”probably the first peaceful sleep heā€™d ever known.

Give them a chance. Give them love. They need us.

From a dad who saved a soul.

THE PAW CLUB IS NINE YEARS OLD TODAY !!

Wow !! In the blink of an eye we are nine years old........

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers past and present - we couldn't have done it without you.

Puppy Club was seven years old last November - and many of the pups from my puppy classes or puppy 121's are now regular furry house guests at The Paw Club when their owners go on holiday.

Thank you to everyone for telling people all about me and my little business and for following my page, for laughing along with me, laughing at me.......and also crying with me too - we lost so many wonderful dogs last year.........there are no words to convey the true pain and grief of losing a dog - but as fellow dog owners and dog lovers I know you know.......and I know you get it and feel it too.

I started my little business nine years ago - I never in my wildest dreams thought that nine years later I would still be here, or that I would meet the most amazing people, make lifelong friends, meet such lovely dog owners with awesome pups and dogs.

Your dogs are my dogs......ā¤ā¤

At fifty seven years of age - I am not quite in my prime, but I plan to be around for some time to come.

Thank you for sharing my posts - without you gorgeous people there wouldn't be a Paw Club.

Thank you for booking with The Paw Club and for supporting our little business over the last nine years - we really, really value your custom.

All my love from the bottom of my heart .....

Puppy Socialisation.

Thereā€™s so much confusion around what true socialisation really means for your pup!

šŸ˜ÆSocialisation is NOT:

ā€¢ Throwing your pup into chaotic situations like doggie day care or taking them to your local park and letting them run off lead with all the other dogs.
ā€¢ Letting them greet every single dog or person on walks.
ā€¢ Allowing strangers to invade their space with unwanted pats or kisses.
ā€¢ Forcing your untrained pup into noisy, overwhelming environments and hoping for the best, like taking them to the pub on a Saturday night !!

āœ… Socialisation IS about:

ā€¢ Teaching your dog to interact calmly and appropriately in controlled settings.
ā€¢ Showing them that ignoring other dogs on walks is perfectly fine (and actually better!).
ā€¢ Advocating for your pup by telling strangers when itā€™s not okay to approach.
ā€¢ Gently guiding them towards healthy behaviours instead of reacting with fear, aggression, or over-arousal.
ā€¢ Building their focus on you - so that you are the fun factory and the source of everything important.

True socialisation is about teaching your puppy how to exist calmly in the worldā€”not pulling, panicking, barking, or lunging at every distraction.

Exposure alone isnā€™t the magic keyā€”guidance is everything!

Over exposure and the wrong exposure will cause your puppy to be reactive in the future.

Your objective is for a dog that stays calm, confident and focused on you, no matter what the environment throws their way.

I have a complaint about the programme.......Pete Wickes : For Dogs Sake !

Only four episodes......!! We have been robbed.

I will miss the cute nose, the glossy locks, the bright shiny eyes and that cheeky personality - and I will miss the dogs too.....šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

A great series - lets hope they make another series or ten.....and shed more light on the pressure that all rescue centres up and and down the country are under right now.

The volunteers and the staff are unsung heroes !

Keep the faith.
