Lyra the schnauzer puppy came to see us this week for flea and worming preventatives 🐕🐾

🪱 Tapeworm is one of the internal parasites that we aim to prevent with our flea and worming medications. It is relatively common in the UK 🪱

Tapeworms can be caught if your dog ingests infected fleas when grooming, and by eating raw meat or carcasses.

Dogs who have tapeworms may scoot, itch, and could show signs of weight loss.

Regular flea and worming preventatives protect you and your pet from these parasites 🐶🪱

Judy the pug puppy came to see us this week to collect flea and worming medications. We are in love! 🐶

🪱 There are many different endoparasites (or internal parasites) seen here in the UK. The most common are roundworm, tapeworm and lungworm 🪱

Roundworm can be caught by puppies in the womb, or passed through their mother's milk. They can also be transmitted if the dog eats soil, faeces, raw meat or animal carcasses, or by picking contaminated objects.

Roundworm can cause weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, and even life threatening intestinal blockages in some cases.

Regular worming prevents your pet from developing potentially fatal parasite infestations, and reduces the spread of endoparasites in our pets, and in people! 🐶🪱

Bringing your puppy in for their first healthcheck can be daunting, but it's an important time for your pet
As well as ensuring that your puppy is fit and healthy, and has had the vaccines they need to stay safe out in the big wide world, we are able to acclimatise them to the veterinary environment, helping to reduce stress when they come to see us as they get older! 🐕🐾

Sasha came to us for her final revisit this week 🐶

Sasha has been suffering with seborrhea, or overproduction of keratin, which causes a dry, lackluster coat. In some cases of sebrorrhea we can see dandruff, greasy or oily skin and itchiness.

There are two kinds of seborrhea:
Primary Seborrhea is a genetic, congenital disease passed on from parents, and is more common in certain breeds, such as westies and spaniels.

Secondary Seborrhea can be caused allergies, different diseases including cushings and diabetes, mites, lice, and autoimmune diseases.

Following treatment with oral medication and a special shampoo, Sasha is feeling much better and has a beautiful shiny coat. ✨️

Nellie the Belgian malinois puppy came to see us this week for her vaccines.

Belgian malinois are a type of shepherd dog with extremely high energy and intelligence levels! They are certainly not for the faint hearted.

That said, they are extremely loyal and devoted to their owners when trained efficiently. They were originally used for herding, but have since been employed by the police and the military, as well as search and rescue teams 🐶🚓

Archie came to see us today for his kennelcough vaccine! 💉

Kennelcough is a respiratory infection that can be caused by bacteria and viruses. It is highly contagious.

Most dogs who contract kennelcough will recover without treatment, but puppies, elderly dogs, and dogs that are immunocompromised may require treatment, and can even develop complications such as pneumonia.

Kennelcough vaccinations are often required when attending daycare or kennels, as disease can spread quickly whe dogs are in close quarters.

Despite the name, kennelcough can be caught anywhere where other dogs that could be infected have been - such as parks and common dog walking areas.

Kennel cough is usually characterised by a honking cough, gagging, and nasal or ocular discharge.

Pura the kitten came to see us for her vaccines 🐈‍⬛

Many people with indoor cats decline routine preventative healthcare such as vaccines, microchipping and flea or worming preventatives. 💉

According to Cats Protection's 2024 Statistics, only 62% of cat owners take their cats to the vets once a year! 🏨

Preventative healthcare is important even for indoor cats. Diseases and parasites can be brought into the house by people on clothing and shoes, or by other pets! 🐈

This is the very handsome Toffee, who came to see us this week to be castrated. He belongs to a local rescue, Kirkby Cats Home, who rescue and adopt out stray or unwanted felines 🐈

🐾🐶 PAWSOME PET OF THE MONTH 🐶🐾

Here is the very beautiful Mollie. After suffering with recurring infections, lethargy, and weight loss, we ran a blood test in-house, and found that her glucose was elevated. Further urine testing revealed that Mollie is diabetic.

In order to help manage her diabetes, we fitted a glucose monitor so her owners could keep track of her glucose levels at home using their mobile phones until she stabilises.

Mollie is now back to playing with her toys at home. What a brave girl she is! 🐾🐶

Coco came to see us for her first vaccination. Can anyone guess what two breeds she is? 🐶🐾
