Two adorable patients hopped in last week:
β€’ Duck came in for castration πŸ‡βœ‚οΈ
β€’ Lark came in for spaying πŸ‡πŸ’‰

Both were absolute sweethearts and were so well
behaved. Both bunnies are currently in the care of Burrowed Hearts Animal Rescue and will be available for rehoming once they are full healed.

🌟 STAR PATIENT - MILO 🌟

We would like to introduce little Milo to you. Milo is just 24 weeks old and he came to see us this week suffering from a really severe life-threatening anaemia. A normal kitten's red blood cell count is approximately 25-37% and this is a measure of the number of red blood cells they are carrying in their blood. One of the main jobs of red blood cells is to carry oxygen around the body. Without them, cells die, organs die and ultimately animals can die. A poorly cat's red blood cell level is often 20-25%, a really sick is often 15-20% but Milo's count was at just 6%!!!! 😡😡😡 This meant that he had a severe risk to life...

Milo was hospitalised in order to be stabilised. He was placed onto intravenous fluids, had full blood testing performed to check for any underlying issues and to confirm his anaemia, he was tested for cat aids (FIV) and leukaemia (FeLV) and was clear of those and he had some other tests sent off to the external lab.

Anaemia can occur for many reasons in cats and whilst Milo's test results are still pending, the most likely cause for Milo's anaemia is a bacterial infection called Mycoplasma. This specific type of Mycoplasma infects red blood cells causing them to become damaged and the cells then burst. We are awaiting his test results to hopefully confirm this infection but thankfully it can be treated with very specific antibiotics and he was started on these straight away.

Red blood cells can take weeks to be regenerated and replaced so in order to bide Milo some time, it was essential that he reveived a blood transfusion. This however is not a straight forwards procedure... firstly there isn't a blood store available for cat blood like there is for dogs and humans. Cat blood doesn't store very well and also there are big ethical considerations to be taken when considering whether a cat should donate blood. Dog donations are done conscious as they are excellent patients. Cats however have to be sedated so this poses the first risk to the donor cat. Secondly a very specific volume of blood must be taken from the donor cat in order to fill the collection bag as it cannot be partly filled. For cats, even the smallest collection bag requires the average cat to have 5 times the amount of blood taken that is considered safe to be removed. This then ends up making a previously healthy donor cat extremely anaemic and then poses a risk to their own life... This is why blood transfusions are generally not performed often in cats.

Thankfully however, a cat can receive dog blood as a one off treatment. Whilst this isn't an ideal scenario as clearly blood from the same species of animal would be the best case scenario, this was the best way of getting red blood cells into Milo quickly as a matter of life or death. Blood transfusions, even with blood of the same species, carries a risk of a transfusion reaction which in itself can be life threatening and this risk increases when using blood from another species. The team ordered Milo's blood products from the fantastic Pet Blood Bank located in Loughborough so that Milo could start his transfusion as soon as possible.

Milo required continual intensive care monitoring during his transfusion by our amazing team of vet nurses. They monitored his vital signs as blood went in drop by drop so that if there were to be any problems, then they could alert to vets immediately and his transfusion would be stopped.

Thankfully we are pleased to say that Milo's transfusion was a success!! πŸ’ͺ His red blood cell count increased from 6% before his transfusion up to 24% after his transfusion. He also became much more lively to the point where he even pulled his IV catheter out. πŸ™ˆ He still has a long way to go so we're keeping all fingers and toes crossed for this handsome boy.

Get well soon Milo!! πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€
