Tico and Charlotte went on a surprise therapy visit today. The lady and gentleman were told to be in their garden at 3pm and we arrived and they were overjoyed by the goaty surprise.
Paul had been unwell recently and is a big fan of Cannon Hall Farm especially the goats. We certainly weren't Rob and Dave but the animals were certainly a big hit and both Tico and Charlotte got lots of fuss and cuddles

Memory from 5th April 2021

A real success story this week to really lift us for this Easter weekend. 🌼🌼 and one of my Hensell Boreray ewes became the star of the show.
A Boreray lamb 🐑 born weighing 2.1kg unfortunately couldn’t be reared by its mum after 24 hours; gained a new Foster mum yesterday. 💖💖
The fostering has been a triumph.
They have named her 💕Kylie 💕and she is doing so well.
Some photos of Kylie before modelling a knitted little number. Then with her new mum. ❤️❤️

I am so thrilled as the new foster mum is one of my Hensell rare breed Boreray ewes, who I sold to Babylun Sheep a couple of years ago.
Its always so lovely to hear about how my stock and this has made my Easter and great feel good story for Hensell Native & Rare Breeds.

The Pygmy Goat Gang!
The Pygmy is a British breed of dwarf goat. It is small, compact and generally stockily built. It was established in the 1980s by fusion of the various miniature goat populations of the United Kingdom into a single breed. These were of two principal types: a stocky achondroplastic type derived from the West African Dwarf group of breeds of West Africa; and a small but well-proportioned type derived from the Southern Sudan goat. They are kept mainly for enjoyment, interest and companionship and are generally quiet and docile.

TICO - our very own Hensell Superstar, everyone's favourite cheeky boy.
DOLLY - Tico's Mummy who after many years of breeding was due to be culled as she had Mastitis but after a few visits from our brilliant vet. Dolly is now on top form and loving life.
CHARLOTTE- Her Mummy couldn't feed her and we fostered her for the first 3 weeks to give her a chance of life and then after a busy summer on another farm we bought her in October and she is so loving and always looking for cuddles.
FREDDIE - When Charlotte first arrived she was the only baby and getting bullied by the big guys so Freddie was kindly donated to the farm by David Wright and Charmain Wright and since ganging up with Charlotte they are proper little monkeys and always up to mischief together.
PASHA - The shy one, she is longing to be as brave as her sister Lily but always keeps her distance. She joins in with all the goaty games but is a little shy of human touch at the moment.
LILY - Half sister to Tico and has his comical ways. She is always looking for a Hobnob biscuit treat or begging for a slice of apple, Lily always has to es**rt me to the gate when I leave, just in case there is a spare treat in my pocket

Meet the Golden Guernsey Goats... Tasy, Amy, Albi, Gordy and Georgie...
These are rare breed goats and are on the "At Risk" endangered list with the RBST (Rare Breeds Survival Trust). There are said to be between 500-1000 left in the world. The numbers have improved slightly since I began keeping them. They had been on the "Priority" list but numbers are growing slowly.
The breed is adaptable to free range or stall feeding and has an affectionate and docile nature making it a good household goat.

Tasy (on the left) and her mum Amy - the sweetest girls on the yard and never any trouble.
Albi - Mr Self Important, always wanting to be the centre of attention. Albi is the first goat to greet you when you arrive on the yard and follows you around tirelessly in the hope of a good neck scratch. When he talks its sounds like "Me, me, me" !
Gordy and Georgie - born the same week as Amy and Albi but these are the shy boys. Gordy is Amy's true love and they are often found cuddled together in the straw. Georgie is quite happy if left to his own devices pottering around the yard

Key Characteristics The breed is adaptable to free range or stall feeding and has an affectionate and docile nature making it a good household goat.  The breed is generally smaller than other milking breeds and fine-boned. The head should have no tassels The ears are erect with a slight upturn....

Why buy from abroad when there is good cows milk available at Farmer Brown's Huttoft and we will soon have goats milk

Almond milk and avocados are disastrous for the environment, vegans who buy them instead of 🇬🇧 meat and dairy should consider impact of diets says Adam Hensons Cotswold Farm Park

Those who attack livestock farmers for climate change while buying imported products with high environmental footprint are inconsistent.

One almond nut produced in California requires 12 litres of water and some farmers in the 🇺🇸 state are ripping out almond trees because of drought. Almond production in the 🇺🇸 has been criticised for harming bees because it involves pesticides.

Avocados are water-intensive and rural communities in Chile have accused growers of illegally diverting rivers leaving them without water to serve demand in 🇬🇧 and elsewhere for a crop known as “green gold”. Avocado production in Mexico has been linked to illegal logging and land clearances

Henson’s partner and daughter are vegetarian and they all discussed choosing the right products. “If you’re drinking soya milk that might have come from S America and caused deforestation, the destruction of species, the displacement of indigenous people You’re better off drinking milk from a local dairy farm that’s been bottled there and delivered to your doorstep, where cattle are wonderfully looked after and the family contribute to the local society and economy.”

“Avocado and almond milk are disastrous for the environment. Beef, sheep and dairy farmers are having fingers pointed at them quite a lot about health and climate change, but the industries are doing a huge amount about that.”

“So I would urge people to eat 🇬🇧 food and don’t buy cheap food from abroad. It’s about understanding where your food comes from and making informed choices, not having a kneejerk reaction because you’ve read something on social media.”

Henson said that he believed some arguments used by vegans/vegetarians to justify their diet were misplaced. “Some individuals haven’t done enough research into what they are eating and the impact that they are having on the world”

Henson said farmers were focusing more on the environment because NFU Online had set a target of net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions for farmers in England and Wales by 2040, a decade ahead of the U.K. legally binding target for achieving overall carbon neutrality.

Bagot Goat

Breed of the Week
The Bagot is a striking parkland breed with the ability to forage in rough scrubland. It is a popular addition to Farm Parks and country estates with a growing reputation for usefulness in conservation grazing schemes. For example, the RBST herd of Bagots at Shugborough Park Farm are used to maintain the fragile archeology and habitats of a former walled garden.
The first account of the breed is of a herd at the Blithfield Estate in Staffordshire owned by Sir John Bagot in 1389.
The exact origin of the breed is unknown.Bagots are mainly used for conservation grazing, or more accurately conservation browsing. Their primitive nature means they are hardy and low input. Goats are good at clearing scrub and will usually choose to browse hedges over grazing grass.

Hello Hensell Gordon, called "Gordy" in the yard. He is a very shy Golden Guernsey wether (castrated male goat) and was born in March 2018. Recently he has taken to living in the Pygmies stable as the other Golden Guernseys tended to bully him. Gordy loves spending time with Dolly and the Diddy goats and his confidence is growing
