LILLY HAS A RUPTURED CRUCIATE LIGAMENT - WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

If you, like Lily's pet parents, ever face the difficult decision of how to treat your dog for a cruciate ligament injury, here are some important points to consider:

Surgery, which is considered to be the gold standard treatment, with a reported success rate of 85-95%, can provide a quicker recovery time, and improved function, but does come with risks and higher costs.

Conservative treatment, combining rest, nutritional support and physical therapy on the other hand, is more affordable, less invasive, and has fewer potential complications - but may not as effective, especially in large dogs. A survey of 80 dogs by Vasseur however, reported that 85% of dogs under 15kg bodyweight manged this way, showed no sign of lameness after an average follow-up period of 3 years.

For small dogs like Lilly therefore, leash walks, ensuring a healthy weight, and natural support, is an option well worth considering, following cruciate ligament injury.

NOTE:

Joint degeneration will eventually occur in all affected dogs, whether operated on or not. To help maintain normal healthy joint function and mobility for as long as possible, it is best to start giving Joints and Joint Support as soon as possible after any cruciate ligament injury, or similar event.
