All About Second Chance Animal Rescue:

Hi my name is John, I am the founder member of Second Chance Animal Rescue in Crockenhill, or SCAR as it’s become known as by our volunteers & supporters. I have been caring and rescuing animals on a small scale for as long as I can remember, first at home with my parents, then from my own garden until finally in 2011 I was lucky enough to find a small plot

of land in Crockenhill. Wherever possible we do try and find a new forever home for the animals but if that is not possible then they are allowed to live out their life at the rescue. Our ethos “is live and let live”, these animals have suffered prior to reaching SCAR, so should be allowed to have a happy life enjoying freedom and enrichment that SCAR has to offer. SCAR is registered with the Charity Commission. We are always grateful of any support anyone can provide the rescue with. We always need sheds, building materials, animal bedding, and feed. If you think that you could possibly help in any way please get in touch either by telephone or email. Anyone wishing to come and see what we are doing and meet the animals is more than welcome, but this is by prior arrangement only. Many thanks for taking the time to read this and we hope to hear from you in the future. John and all at SCAR Crockenhill.

This little one has come home as she has a bit of a sore eye and needs a bit of TLC . She is a little bit fiesty but is gradually enjoying a cuddle and is now looking round the house . Her two siblings have been reserved so this time at home will give her a chance to see us humans are OK! Star the dog can't understand why she doesn't want to snuggle up with her yet but give it time . Once she has recovered she is looking for her forever home which hopefully will be soon . If you think she is the kitten for you please email

Sunday was a bigger kitten that came to us as a lost boy that wasn't microchipped . He was found on a Sunday hence his name and we kept that . He was the most handsome and lovable boy you could imagine . He was a bundle of fun but was so affectionate and we all became very fond of him . Luckily a lovely lady came to see our cats and fell in love with him . He was microchipped and neutered and off he went . As you can see he has well and truly found his forever home and doesn't he look happy . He has a playmate and is so content . We love having updates on our rescues . X

Noodles our ferret has decided she doesn't want to face the day today and is going to snooze all day ! We can't say we blame her now that autumn seems to be quietly creeping in . Around the rescue the leaves have started to show off their changing colours and the blackberries are dying off . All the animals will soon get their winter coats and the sun will start to lose its strength. Hopefully we will get another month of summer but we still think she has the right idea today ! X

Dobby our roving goat is still practicing escapology and happily getting into mischief around the rescue . He pops up everywhere but especially where there is food . . He loves a quick cuddle in passing but his daily routine mustn't be changed ! We don't know how he manages to get himself in and out but he does it very quickly and quietly. He certainty has become one of our characters at the rescue and it does make us chuckle which will brighten up this wet day . Enjoy x

Just a selection of our exotic animals we look after . They are all getting old now as we have had them for many years now . They all have huge enclosures to live in as one of our volunteers works very hard to enrich their lives and environment for them . We think they are certainly calendar boys and are so photogenic. Hope you love them too .x

Can you please help us to help these Mums. We already have very many kittens and these two decided to both give birth over the weekend . We also took in a cat with kittens as well and she is pregnant again . Our maternity ward is full and we are running out of food for both Mums and kittens . We have to feed the Mums more times a day to support them to feed their kittens and also to help with pregnancy so they have healthy babies . This year we have all been inundated with pregnant cats and kittens and they do eat a lot ! Anything thing you can donate we will be very grateful as will the Mums . You can also drop off at the rescue x Thank you again .x

Jasper is still looking for a forever home. He can be a bit of a pickle and needs space to just be himself . He wants to find a home where he can decompress and take things at his pace . He is 10 years old and needs to be with someone without any others cats or dogs and no children . He would prefer a really quiet home with someone who can take him at his own pace and not rush him . If you think you could love an old man please email on

On 7th September we will be at the Heavy Horse Show in Shoreham Kent for the 4th time . It's an amazing show with so much to do and see especially if you love all things to do with the countryside. Paddy our miniature Shetland will be with us alongside various other of our animals . You can see how tiny he looks alongside one of the beautiful horses in the show ! We love meeting everyone and showing people what the rescue is about . Hopefully the weather will be kind and the sun shines all day . Please come and visit us on our stand right by the show ring and play our tombola which raises funds for the winter months ahead . We look forward to seeing you all . X

We know !!! Yes it's only August but it's not long till the Christmas mayhem starts and we don't want you to miss out . We at the rescue are proud of our Christmas grotto and we try to make it an individual fun time for the children , parents ,grandparents and friends . The ethos of our Christmas event is to make it a relaxed ,different , less corporate but affordable Santa visit . Some of you know we have a Santa that welcomes doggie visits too. There are games for the children and lots to buy . Our grotto will stay at the same price of £6 again with a lovely present . We will be releasing the dates to start booking very soon . We look forward to seeing you all . X

We have a colony of feral cats that are not suitable for homes but are very happy to live outside and generally will come for a fuss on their terms . They are fed everyday and have plenty of places in the dry to sleep . As you can see two of them have made themselves at home in our bunny barn and they enjoy using the beds made up for them when they want . During the winter the cats love being in the barn so it gets quite full ! Lots of people don't understand that as long as they have food and a dry, warm place to sleep cats are happy to be outside . All our cats are neutered before going outside so we are sure they won't breed . Most of the time they all live in harmony with each other and with us humans which must be a lesson for us all !

Just a short video of our very naughty boy Dobby . We think he has an invisibility cloak and manages to get out of the large enclosure and go where he chooses . He can often be found round the pig area clearly enjoying a snack or two ! He is so funny and a proper character and when you go to find him he is back with the other goats with that innocent expression on his face . He has certainly one of our well known favorite boys and certainly a character !
