All About Second Chance Animal Rescue:

Hi my name is John, I am the founder member of Second Chance Animal Rescue in Crockenhill, or SCAR as it’s become known as by our volunteers & supporters. I have been caring and rescuing animals on a small scale for as long as I can remember, first at home with my parents, then from my own garden until finally in 2011 I was lucky enough to find a small plot

of land in Crockenhill. Wherever possible we do try and find a new forever home for the animals but if that is not possible then they are allowed to live out their life at the rescue. Our ethos “is live and let live”, these animals have suffered prior to reaching SCAR, so should be allowed to have a happy life enjoying freedom and enrichment that SCAR has to offer. SCAR is registered with the Charity Commission. We are always grateful of any support anyone can provide the rescue with. We always need sheds, building materials, animal bedding, and feed. If you think that you could possibly help in any way please get in touch either by telephone or email. Anyone wishing to come and see what we are doing and meet the animals is more than welcome, but this is by prior arrangement only. Many thanks for taking the time to read this and we hope to hear from you in the future. John and all at SCAR Crockenhill.

Before and after photos of Lou Lou . She has a lovely spa day today with lovely Lisa at the Dog Spa in Crayford . She has been pampered and is now looking so much better all clean , trimmed and blown dry . She was wary of the hairdryer but was a good girl and put up with it . She also played with Norman Lisa s little rescue ( will post a video on Friday ) so when we picked her up she was ready for a sleep as she was warm and tired from playing . Thanks to Lisa as always for a fabulous job and for being so kind . Lou Lou will feel so much better and will continue to improve . X

And today's good news is ..... The little kitten that had cat flu has recovered really well and is off to his new home this morning. We love a couple of days of really good news especially when you look out the window and know how cold it is ! X

An update for you all on Lou Lou. As you can see she has been eating well and is now strong enough to play . She has also found her voice and will occasionally give a bark which she didn't do beforehand . We took her to the vets today for a weigh in and check up and she has gone from 3.4 kg to her current weight of 4.9 kg .She has still a way to go but we have stopped her hourly small meals to every three hours now . Where she was gobbling it down she is now taking her time to eat . Lou Lou is so much stronger and now enjoys a little walk on a lead . She will stand and watch the world go by and loves to sniff everything so it's a very short long walk !!! She doesn't like being in the dark so her fosters have to leave a light on for her . She is back to the vets to be weighed again next week then a follow up for second vaccination . She is off for a spa on Tuesday but we are happy to report the fur is now growing back on her ears . She really is a sweetheart . It shows with food ,love and proper check ups they improve so much . Thank you all for your support and be assured we are doing our best for this little lady x

Bertie and George our newest donkeys have settled in very well . Bertie is quite compliant and will do what you ask however George the dark one is a pickle. He managed to get his waterproof rug off in the field and won't easily be caught ! He will happily follow Bertie wherever he goes so getting them in isn't too difficult. They have a farrier appointment on Monday which will be quite interesting to watch . Donkeys kick with both back legs and are very stubborn when they want to be . Both of them are real sweetheart though and love to be fussed . Donkeys certainly have a special place in all our hearts .x

Update on our little kitten who came in with Flu . Freddie has gone off to finish his treatment and be socialised with his foster mum. He was quite feral when he was bought in and with lots of cuddles , food and play will be a lovely lively boy. As he is so little he will do better in a warm house . All our animals at the rescue have more bedding and more food to see them through these very cold nights and days . We are certainly looking forward to lighter mornings and evenings and lots of sunshine ! Keep warm yourselves if you can .x

A huge thank you to the support yesterday for the little dog now called Lou Lou. She is having lots of chicken and rice, scrambled egg and high protein dog food in small meals every hour plus puppy biscuits left down for her to graze on. She isn't gobbling down the meals as much knowing she will get more ! We have had to find her a lightweight coat to wear as padding and for warmth . Her next vet appointment has been booked and she is also booked in for a pamper with Lisa at the Dog Spa who is so gentle and will treat her with absolute kindness. Anything she needs she is getting and through it all she is wagging her tail and licking our faces ! Thank you all for the support and messages and we will keep you updated on her progress. She was microchipped but it wasn't registered . We will do our best for this little girl . X

Over the weekend we had a dog left unwanted and very starved in our donation shed . She could have been left overnight or early morning. They hadn't even put a blanket in with her . Anderson's vets at Orpington saw her immediately and treated her for mites , fleas worms and started her vaccinations . She is severely underweight but is eating small hourly meals. It is so sad to see but she is such a happy dog who is so affectionate. If you can help us with her ongoing vet bills and food we would be so grateful. We hopefully have a home lined up in a couple of months when she has had a clean bill of health and is a better weight . As you know we don't take dogs but this is an exception and she is being fostered while so thin . If you can donate the links are below

Today is a day of reflection. The success and the losses of much loved animals . We have been fortunate to have rehomed so many of our rescued or surrendered pets . Very many kittens and their mum's have gone off to live a new life as well as rabbits and guinea pigs . We have had heartbreaking decisions to have made but very many happy memories. We would be happy to have no need for rescues but reality is it's getting so much busier. Space is a premium and so many times we have to say we are full and you know we have let the animals down. On the upside the photos of rehomed pets make it all worthwhile . We wish you all a very happy New Year from all of us . May 2025 be a good year for all of you and for us .xx

Yesterday we took in a 6 week old kitten from a vet practice we use that had been found . Unfortunately he has cat flu and is now in isolation . If anyone has any kitten food they no longer need we would be very grateful. . He is a feisty little thing which will be a challenge to medicated . Hopefully with a bit of handling he will learn to trust us and calm down as at the moment he is a ninja ! It's really the wrong time of year for kittens especially ones that are feral .Hopefully this is a one off . Thank you x

Christmas might be all done now and the New Year is just round the corner . We like to reflect on how many of the animals we have taken in and how many have new homes . Our wish for 2025 is that everyone keeps their pets and there are no strays but we know that is impossible. We understand people's circumstances change but please think carefully before you commit to any animals . We are lucky to have so many surrendered animals happily living in new families x

We would like to say a huge thank you for all your help and support over the last year . It means so much to us and we are so grateful to everyone . We couldn't do what we do without your donations . We would also like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers without who we couldn't look after so many animals . They come in regardless of of weather etc to make sure everyone is fed , watered , cleaned and most importantly a lot of love . Of course Christmas day ,Boxing day we can't stop and the animals will get a few extra treats ! We hope you all have a wonderful time . Happy Christmas ###

Our piggies love to snuffle through their beds in case they find a hidden snack or two . Mud is their second favorite thing especially to wallow in! The volunteers that work with the piggies adore them and know all their little foibles and they get a proper pamper at times . Pigs are very intelligent and know exactly what they can and can't get away with ! We love our pigs .x

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Earl of Warwick pub in Welling for all the goodies they bought up to us yesterday. We are so grateful for the support we get from local businesses which means so much to us . We give the animals more food during the winter months plus extra bedding to make sure they are lovely and warm inside and out ! The donation of both food , toys and blankets will certainly go down well . Thank you so much x
