📣EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT📣

Our vet, Richard, has won the Cats Protection Vet of the Year 2024 award!

We want to send a massive CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 to him on this fantastic achievement - we couldn’t be prouder!

This award is testament to the care that he provides to every pet he meets and treats and the dedication he has to his role. We believe that no one deserves this award more than him!

We are planning a surpise for Richard to celebrate, so would like to invite our clients and friends to the clinic for some tea and cake tomorrow (Thursday 19th September) between 12-2pm. As much as we’d love everyone to be able to join us, unfortunately we do have to limit numbers due to space constraints. If you’d like to join us, please call the surgery from 8.30am and we will allocate you an invite number.

These adorable kittens came in to us for their vaccinations 💉.

Vaccinations are vital in keeping your cat happy and healthy. There are lots of reasons to get your cat vaccinated, such as:

🐾 protecting them against deadly diseases
🐾 helping to prevent the spread of certain diseases among other felines
🐾 protecting vulnerable cats from becoming seriously ill
🐾 most insurers will require you to vaccinate your cat for your insurance to be valid against preventable diseases
🐾 if you use a cattery for holiday care, they will usually require you to vaccinate your cat

Kittens can be vaccinated from around eight weeks old. Two vaccines are usually needed – three to four weeks apart – to make sure kittens are well protected. A booster vaccine is then given yearly to keep immunity levels high.

Adult cats can be given their first vaccines at any age, so even if your cat is not currently vaccinated it's not too late to think about protecting them 😻

Dealing with hairballs? Here's what you need to know!

Around 10% of healthy cats will vomit hairballs. This happens as cats ingest fur while grooming. Normally fur will travel down the digestive tract and be passed out in faeces, however sometimes it can pack together into a 'hairball' and cannot be passed through the digestive tract, so it is vomited. If the hairball cannot be vomited, it might cause an obstruction of the digestive tract which is very serious and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Hairballs will occur more frequently in:

🐾 Long haired cats that are not groomed regularly
🐾 Older cats with slower gut motility
🐾 Cats that overgroom due to skin conditions, pain or stress

To help prevent hairballs, you can take these steps:

🐾 Increase water intake with wet diet or extra water bowls
🐾 Regular grooming, especially for long haired cats
🐾 Make an appointment with us to treat any underlying medical or behavioural causes
🐾 Chat with us about hairball specific diets with increased fiber and supplements to aid the passing of hairballs

If you have any concerns about your cat, please don't hesitate to give us a call 🐱

'No longer a stray' - by Carole Preble

When you look into my eyes,
I know what you will see.

There is only love and trust
Where fear once used to be.

For I was an abandoned cat,
A cold and hungry stray.

But you reached out your gentle hands
And took me home to stay.

I've eagerly accepted the compassion you have shown.
I soon forgot the times when I was frightened and alone.

You opened up your heart to me
And taught me how to trust.

You've given me a loving home
Where kindness is a must.

So when you gaze into my face I hope you'll realize,
That "love without condition" is reflected in my eyes.

Did you know that 90% of cats over 12 years of age are affected by osteoarthritis?
Some symptoms to look out for include:

🐈 Reluctance to jump up or down
🐈 Walking stiffly or limping
🐈 Laying down to play
🐈 Decreased grooming or matted fur
🐈 Hiding more than usual
🐈 Unexpected aggression

Osteoarthritis can be really painful for your cat, but there are treatments we can use to manage the pain. If you are worried your cat has any of these symptoms, please don't hesitate to book a consultation for further advice and treatment options.

Did you know it's crucial for your cat to fast before anesthesia? Starving your cat prior to their procedure helps prevent serious complications.

Cats with food in their stomach may vomit under anaesthesia or upon recovery. This can cause them to inhale their stomach contents and lead to aspiration pneumonia. By fasting your cat, this risk is greatly reduced.

To keep your pet safe, please follow these guidelines before any anaesthetic procedure:

✨ No food after 10pm the night before
✨ Ensure a bowl of water is available overnight
✨ Let us know if your cat is taking any medications
✨ Don't hesitate to discuss any concerns with us

Fasting may be inconvenient, but it's the best way to ensure a smooth, safe procedure for your cat. As soon as they recover from the anaesthesia we offer them food, and most cats accept with enthusiasm 😻 Pictured is Reggie enjoying his first meal after his castrate this week!

With the Olympics in full swing, we can't help but wonder how our feline friends would perform given the chance! 🐱

If there were Cat Olympics, what events do you think your kitty would dominate? Would they excel at the 100m zoomies, the fly catching high jump or even the garden fence balance beam?

We are well in to "kitten season" now.

It might seem like a lovely idea to let your cat have a litter of kittens. Cats are great, pretty easy going, no bother.

But what happens when your mother cat rejects her kittens? What happens if there are complications during birth and she is physically unable to nourish her babies?

The cold harsh reality is that you then become mum. Can you keep the babies warm? Are you prepared to get up every hour or two through the night to bottle feed them? Are you prepared to stimulate their bowel movements if needed? Can you afford the vet bills if they need medical help?

You could have 2, you could have 6. So by the time you've finished bottle feeding and sorting out number 6, you've got about 10 minutes before you need to go back to number 1.

Neutering your cat is VITAL in controlling the cat population. There are so many kittens left out to fend for themselves. A female cat can give birth and become pregnant again almost instantly!

From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites every day.
Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.
Parasites are very common in the UK and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:
🦟 Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.
🐛 Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.
🐛Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.
🕷️ Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' – tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

Be sure to get a good quality prescription treatment. Why not sign up to our health care plan and we'll keep your feline friend covered all year round 😻

Just like us, our pets can suffer from allergies. As a pet owner, it is important to be aware of the common allergies and their symptoms.
🐾 Flea Allergies:
Flea bites can trigger allergic reactions in pets, leading to excessive scratching, biting, redness, inflammation, and hair loss. Regular flea treatments are essential.
🍗 Food Allergies:
Common allergens include beef, chicken, dairy, and grains.
Symptoms may include itching, hives, vomiting, diarrhoea, and chronic ear infections. If you notice these signs, consult your vet.
🌸 Environmental Allergies:
Allergens such as pollen, dust, mould, and certain plants can cause itching, redness, inflammation, and respiratory issues like coughing and sneezing.
🧴 Contact Allergies:
Triggered by substances like carpet cleaners or grooming products, these allergies cause itching, redness, inflammation, and, in severe cases, blisters or lesions.
🌬️ Inhalant Allergies:
Breathing in allergens like pollen, dust, or mould can lead to sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
Keep an eye out for any of these symptoms and get in touch if you notice any in your pet.
