The Problem Paws Company

The Problem Paws Company I advise owners whose dogs have developed problematic behaviour - like aggression, jumping up, guarding food, separation anxiety and destructiveness.

At this moment, I am not taking on any new dogs with problem behaviour Resolving your dog’s problem will not happen overnight. Your dog’s behaviour issues have probably taken a while to develop and so may take quite a while to be improved or made better. I will assess your dog and develop a treatment programme based on the reason behind your dog's behaviour. I only use gentle, reward based techniques.

She was constantly staying near the fish market and watching people come to buy fish. She took a leaf that fell from the tree and came to the owner. On the first day, surprised, he took her "money" and gave her a fish. From that day on, every morning she comes with a leaf to "buy" fish.

Canine Behavioural Counselling
Initial Home Visit Consultation = £100

This includes:
• A written plan which you will receive shortly after the initial home visit.
• A behavioural treatment session at your home

There is no fixed time per session as every dog and their human is individual.
Follow Up Sessions = £25 per session

Follow up sessions happen where the treatment plan has to be delivered in stages or where the owner is concerned about several problem behaviours. There is no fixed time per session – usually these can average between 1.5h and 2h depending on the issue, treatment session required and owner availability.

During the first home visit I carry out a full assessment of your dog by asking you lots of questions about your dog and observe any problem behaviours where possible. This lets me to think about all aspects of the dog’s health, lifestyle, home and family environment. The information you give me allows me to analyze the possible underlying reasons for your dog’s issues or behaviours.
I then develop a training plan for you follow, which is unique to you and your dog.
As a canine behaviour counsellor I can assist and guide you to address the problem with your dog. For the treatment to be successful your commitment is essential. Together we can address the issues with your dog.
All the techniques I use and recommend are reward based and do not involve punishment.
Positive Reinforcement rewards good behaviour. A food treat, play, cuddle or any related stimuli the dog considers a treat allows us to change and correct a pattern of behaviour.

Dogs who suffer from separation anxiety can be helped through a variety of means. In the long term it is best to help your dog learn how to relax without you being at home and learn how to deal with periods of being alone and a dog behaviour counsellor can help you set up a programme that works for you. In the mean time, you can also use a plug-in diffuser that emits a synthetic pheromone that mimics the scent a pup's mother gives off when nursing her pups. This can help to relax your dog when you are away. You might also try diverting your dog by hiding treats around the home, filling a Kong with food, using a Lickmat (which you spread with yoghurt, cream cheese or meat pate). A snuffle mat is also a great way to help a stressed dog. You hide dry treats in the mat and your dog uses his nose to find the treats buried in the mat!
Here's Misha who suffers from separation anxiety. She normally starts howling as soon as she is left alone but she is now on a programme to help her and a snuffle mat can help in the mean time!

"I've worked with dogs for the past eight years and a year ago, I had to move away. The realisation of not being around a dog certainly became very difficult. So after some thought I signed up to BorrowMyDoggy as having my own dog wasn't a possibility due to work. Luckily we found the perfect dog!! Her name is "Bella" and she's a Miniature Dachshund. We have only known the family less than a month but she has already become a great part of our lives. Thank you for making my dream of having a dog a reality!" - Bella's borrower, Kirsten.
