PSA to the Sunday walkers of South Wales

Control. Your. Dogs.

It’s that simple. If they can’t recall, put them on a lead. It’s been said time and time again but for some, it’s not sinking in.

Gabby has been training at Parc Penallta all day today with some of her regular clients and has had in one day, 8 dogs rush off lead at her clients dogs REPEATEDLY. One group of people even swore and threatened Gabby and her client saying they shouldn’t be there if their dog is ‘not trained’. (The dog was on lead and ignoring everything and focussed on her handler).

All of the dogs Gabby had today have been excellent. Loose leash walking, ignoring dogs, bicycles, children and everything else. 8 people potentially ruined GOOD training sessions by allowing their out of control dogs to rush up to on lead dogs.

One incident of four off lead dogs rushing a German Shepherd we had on lead was possibly the most horrific encounter ever. The owner of the GSD has significant trauma having had her last dog killed by an off lead dog. Her current dog is not aggressive at all but the owner is terrified of something happening to her. Four dogs rushed at her leaving my trainer to manage the situation by physically stopping the dogs, fearing she was going to be bitten, while the owner was in floods of tears having a panic attack. Did the owners apologise? No. They shouted at and insulted my trainer and client. This is abhorrent behaviour. This is ILLEGAL behaviour and will be reported.

At Valleys Dog Behaviour and Training we start the process at our field in a controlled environment, build up handler and dog skills, then transfer to the real world when the dogs are able.

Today, people repeatedly reminded us that most of the dogs that come to us aren’t actually the problem, its members of the public with a sense of entitlement to other peoples and dogs space that’s the problem.

It doesn’t matter if it’s an off leash area. CONTROL. YOUR. DOGS. Everyone has the right to use common spaces and some of the world need to learn to respect that.
