Cassie (age 17) 2 weeks after having 16 teeth removed, abscess treated & now pain free 💗
“Born roughly august 2007 (she was about 12-14 weeks when my brother brought her home)
My brother Leigh was pretty drunk one night over the local pub & a man called in there with this little Jack Russell and said if someone didn’t give him £50 he’s going to let her go over the mountain. My very drunk brother returned home with Cassie. She lived with Leigh & Hayley until she had 4 pups in 2010 & we were having one. We had maxi who’s now nearly 14.
Hayley had just had her second baby and had 2 dogs & now 4 pups so I took full advantage & convinced her maxi needed his mother 😄
Her & maxi have an amazing bond they are inseparable. She still cleans his face & eyes 🥰
She was fiesty in her younger days but she enjoys the more laid back life snoozing on the sofa & eating the best food.
We used to call ourselves Cassies owners but she owns us more like 😄
We love every day we get to spend with her as she’s so precious & very much loved

🗞 Many of you will have seen the news reports today regarding the CMA’s (Competition and Markets Authority) review into the pricing of veterinary services.
At Jack’s, (as many of you will know) we welcome this review. 👍🏻

🥼FACT: Inflated corporate prices DO NOT equate to improved quality of care. We pride ourselves on offering the highest level of care, and welcome new clients with a full tour of our surgery.
🐾FACT: We have complete control over how we run Jack’s with no orders from ‘higher up’. This means we can truly make our decisions based on you and your pets needs.
👀 FACT: We have always promoted transparent and fair pricing. We listed our prices on our website as well as in our reception space from Day 1.
💰FACT: Many medications can be bought online at lower prices than we pay our wholesalers. We are always happy to provide written prescriptions.

Ever wondered how vets monitor anaesthetics in cats and dogs during surgery?
Veterinary Anesthetic monitoring is similar to that found in any human hospital. With the latest equipment at Jack's, we keep every patient as safe as possible during every surgical procedure - from routine neutering and dentals, to cancer treatments and emergency surgery.
Here's how we do it:
- The RVN (Veterinary Nurse) is the most important monitor during an anesthetic procedure. This professional staff member is trained to observe and monitor the patient throughout the entire procedure, from induction until recovery. The nurse works alongside the veterinary surgeon to adjust anesthetic levels according to the patient's vital signs and ensures that the patient remains stable throughout the procedure.
- The Electrocardiogram (ECG) shows the rate and pattern of the heartbeat. It will detect and show abnormal heartbeats called arrhythmias.
- The Blood Pressure Monitor measures the systolic (when the heart contracts or pumps) and occasionally the diastolic (when the heart relaxes or refills) blood pressure. Coupled with other monitoring equipment, this gives detailed information on the cardiovascular status of the patient.
- The Respirometer measures the number of breaths per minute.
- The Core Body Temperature is monitored by inserting a temperature probe into the esophagus. Maintenance of normal body temperature is especially important in pets and aides in speedy recovery from anesthesia.
- Pulse Oximetry may be used to monitor the amount of oxygen in the patient's blood (Sp02) and the pulse rate.
- The End-tidal C02 Monitor is often used in conjunction with a pulse oximeter. This device measures the amount of expired C02 and helps determine of the patient is receiving adequate oxygen during anesthesia.
At Jack's, we have the latest anaesthetic monitoring systems at the surgery and all of our staff are trained to the highest level - because we believe that providing the best care available is a MUST.

📢 "I have many, many pets so have to visit the vets far more frequently than most people. From simple health checks, microchipping and neutering of our new babies to being able to spend last precious cuddles on a sofa whilst saying goodbye to an old friend, I have been overwhelmed with the kindness, generosity and compassion from all the staff at Jack's.
Their exceptional care for owners as well as our pets shone through when, during a family emergency, they stepped in to help with respite care for Scrumpy, our special needs cat!
They're not just extra nice though. This cat is, as we speak, recovering beautifully after life-changing/saving surgery that I thought would require referral to a specialist centre, if attempted at all. Totally up-front about their experience, the risks and the total cost from the start, I had complete faith that Maryam and Lisa would only continue if, at every stage, they were sure it was in his best interests. We're still only a week past surgery and, so far, we are all amazed at how well he is recovering!
They truly are exceptional. Moving over 10 pets, especially when I had no concerns about the care from our previous vets of about 15yrs, felt a little uneasy (staff turnover had started making me feel a little anonymous and long-term health issues had to be repeated often.. but nothing at all complaint worthy!) But I am so very thankful that I took the leap.
They are a fantastic modern take on very old-school values and we are so very grateful (none more so than Scrumpy, who looks happier than he has in years!!) Thanks guys, you've definitely got it right! ###" 📢Rhian Costigan

TAFFY APPLE: Emergency surgery - Splenectomy (Spleen removal) 🚑🐾

"Taff went in to have a lump on his shoulder checked just before the New Year. We decided to have it removed and was booked in for surgery the next day. Surgery went well and he quickly recovered at home.
A couple of weeks later we went to go walking up Llyn Y Fan Fawr on a Saturday. Taff had seemed fine but when he got out of the car he was roached up through his back and was ataxic.
A call to the guys at Jacks vets and we were hurtling to the surgery.
At this point I thought he had just done something minor. Maryam saw him and after some quick tests it became clear he was seriously ill. He was internally bleeding from a tumour on his spleen. We decided to go for immediate surgery.
Luckily he made it through even though he was only given 50/50 chance of survival. He is now back to his old self and I would say he has actually regressed by a couple of years!
Taff is not just my dog he is my companion and emotional support at times. He is also a therapy dog and often comes into counselling sessions which can really help some of my clients.
All the staff were not just so kind and caring with Taff but me as well as I was so scared of losing him and was very upset. I cannot thank Maryam and all the team enough. Highly highly recommend them! It's like stepping back in time to when a visit to the vets was handled with a personal touch and care😁"
'Jack' - A name to live up to...
Swansea Jack (1930 – October 1937) was a famous Welsh dog who lived in the North Dock/River Tawe area of Swansea with his master William Thomas (see photo).
Jack rescued 27 people from the docks and riverbanks of Swansea! He is the most decorated dog of all time in the UK - having received numerous awards for bravery including two bronze medals equivalent to VC Cross.

Free parking as well.
I had a appointment at short notice. Excellent customer service and my puppy was treated with such love.
I phoned my previous vet from when I had a different dog, they were too busy to take my call and didn't even call me back.

Bruna is already a celebrity in her own right (she has a book written about her rescue story!). Thankfully we were able to help her continue her story after a life threatening ordeal..
Her wonderful owner Pat shares her experience from the last few weeks.
“Meet my beautiful Bruna.
On November 23rd this year, while I was out of the house for just two hours, she decided to break through a tough layer of plastic and into a sealed, unopened plastic tub to eat rather a lot of individually wrapped Christmas chocolates, and developed bloat.
She nearly died.
Without Maryam and her amazing team, I would have lost the dog who has changed my life more than any other dog I have ever owned – and I have had quite a few over the years.
My very special dog was rescued from the streets of Phuket, Thailand in 2017 by the brilliant Soi Dog Foundation. Like most street dogs she was at risk, having had yet another litter of pups and was struggling to survive. She lived by scavenging and taking risks on a daily basis, judging whether to trust people or even more critically, other street dogs who were also struggling to survive.
She came into my life in February 2018 and was the culmination of a pledge I had made to myself a number of years before, having travelled in Asia and witnessed first hand the appalling suffering of street dogs and cats. I had promised myself that if I ever had the opportunity to rescue a street dog, then I would.
I feel that Bruna is not just my dog but that she is an ambassador for so many dogs worldwide so I have written a book about our first year together to celebrate just how incredible street dogs are when you give them a chance – and of course, to celebrate one dog in particular: my lovely Bruna. It's "Adopting a Street Dog. ( The Story of Bruna and Me.)"

Bruna’s scavenging instinct has clearly never gone away and nearly cost her life – which would have been devastating. But she is already back to her cheeky “where’s my supper" grin and I can’t believe how lucky we are to still have her in our lives.

Jac is a playful pup known for getting into mischief!
Last week he was brought to Jack’s after being off his food.
A blockage was felt in his abdomen and an X-ray confirmed a foreign body in his intestine.
Jac needed emergency surgery and the foreign body was removed.
Although we still do not know what the foreign object was (even after removal) we do know that Jac is back to his playful, adorable self and for his bravery he is Jack’s Pet of the week!
🐾*Jack's Pet of the Week*♥️🐕
Louie is a therapy dog who helps children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties to self regulate and stay calm. He helps to distract them and to make the right choices when they are deregulated and displaying challenging behaviour.
Last week, Louie was rushed in to Jack's as an emergency. Louie was off his food, seemed distressed and had vomited over twenty times in the space of a few hours. 🚑
After complete blood tests were carried out in house, Louie underwent an abdominal ultrasound and had X-Rays taken. Test results within a few hours showed that Louie was suffering with 'Acute Pancreatitis', which can be a painful and life threatening condition. 🙏
Louie spent three days at Jack's on a drip receiving intensive treatment for Pancreatitis. By the third day the whole team was thrilled that Louie had made a spectacular recovery and was back to his old self eating well again. 🧡
Louie is now back doing what he does best at work - the children love taking him for a walk to help calm them down, or having a cuddle and talking about their feelings. They also read their books to Louie. 📖
** In one of the photos, a child who has autism has put ear defenders on Louie as another child was kicking doors. ♥️

🏆Pet of the Week🏆 Wyatt the Whippet Puppy! Wyatt gave his owner a scare when an emergency visit to Jack's found that he had a fractured tibia.💔 On his latest X-rays we were pleased to find he has now fully healed!🙌 "The whole team at Jack’s vets were absolutely amazing with my whippet puppy Wyatt! Wyatt recently broke his leg and with a lot of bandage changing and about 10 different types of bandaging, (due to Wyatt attacking the bandage )Wyatt is now fully healed!
