⚠️ Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure or even death in dogs. The higher the amount your dog eats, the greater the risk of liver failure complications.

Manufacturers extract xylitol (also called birch sugar) from birch trees, corn fiber, hardwoods and other vegetable matter. It’s made into a white powder that looks and tastes like sugar. It’s about as sweet as sucrose but contains about half the calories, and it doesn’t cause blood sugar spikes.

👉 Here's where xylitol/birch sugar is hiding:
* Drink powders
* Cough drops and syrups
* Instant coffee
* BBQ sauce and ketchup
* Vitamins
* Candy and chocolates
* Toothpaste and mouthwash
* Chewing gum and mints
* Peanut butter, jam, pancake syrup
* Pudding

When a dog eats something containing xylitol, it’s quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. This causes a potent release of insulin from the pancreas. This rapid release of insulin results in a profound drop in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia). And it can happen within 10 to 60 minutes of ingestion. Untreated, this hypoglycemia is often life-threatening.

But ... if you know your dog is poisoned with xylitol, you need to get your dog to the vet for an intra-muscular shot of glutathione. Glutathione is the "king of antioxidants" and is found in every cell. The liver is the major organ of detoxification and desperately needs glutathione to stay healthy ... especially in poisoning emergencies like this. Giving it orally doesn't work ... it must be injected directly.

Most compounding pharmacies can prepare this for you as an intramuscular solution that you can take to your vet or emergency clinic.

On sunny days, pavements can get too hot for dogs to walk on.

To check, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds; if it’s too painful for your hand, then it’s too painful for your dog’s paws. Find out more: thekennelclub.org.uk/hotpavements.

You're probably already aware of the risks posed by warm weather and leaving pets in hot cars, but did you know that wintry weather can also pose many risks too?

The new year is a good time to get your pet checked out to ensure they are as happy and healthy as possible.

💧 Antifreeze is very toxic for all pets, so please do not put it into any outdoor water sources such as bird baths, water features and fountains.

🐾 During walks, your pet's feet, legs, or belly may pick up salt and grit, irritating their skin. Wash your pet's paws and undercarriage if they come into contact with salt and grit.

🚗 Always check in and under your car before departing. Cats shelter under cars when it is cold and sit or even climb inside the bonnet to keep warm.

❗And remember: Do not give your pet dishes containing raisins or grapes, onions, leeks or chives (most dressings and stuffing), as well as bread, processed or sugary foods, and desserts.

Did you know Conkers can be poisonous and harmful to dogs? On crisp autumn walks your dog may come across conkers that have fallen from a horse chestnut tree, but are these shiny seeds poisonous or harmful to dogs? Find out at thekennelclub/conkers.

I posted this for the first time 3 years ago. It went massive with over 20,000 shares to date.

This is such an important message but it still blows my mind how far and wide it went.

Dogs are not public property even though they are in public.
Not every dog wants to be touched by random strangers.
Not every owner wants to have their dog being touch constantly.

Advocate for your dog.

Listen to your dog.

It is OK to say NO.

We need to create a culture where we just ignore the dogs we see out and about. It is ok to look and think about how cute they are but please refrain from trying to interact with them.

We need to take in to account whether the dog wants to be interacted with.

Dogs are sentient beings meaning they are able to perceive or feel things. They perceive sensations and have the ability to perceive emotions, such as love, happiness, fear, stress, and suffering.

We need to start from no longer seeing animals as lesser than us and start to see see them as living being with feelings.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 ….

Fun fact : dogs possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in humans . The part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is about forty times greater than ours. Dogs also have something called neophilia, which means they are attracted to new and interesting odours .

Please sign the petition! To make Dog theft a specific criminal offence.

The Government should create a specific offence for dog theft, with 8 years minimum sentencing and a fine of at least £5,000. Dogs are like members of the family to many people and current laws do not reflect this. Dogs are a support network for so many, a family member, a lifeline.
