Fluffy Marigold is a sweetheart and as cute as they come. But sadly her life wasn’t an easy one before she came into our care.

Found abandoned on a housing estate along with her brother, she was fearful, dirty and injured. Both Marigold and her brother (who has now been adopted) had sustained injuries during early kittenhood, but hadn’t received vet care.

Brave little Marigold has now had an operation on her patella and doing her exercises to build up the muscles again. She runs up and down stairs following a laser pen and loves her feather toy. She’ll bring it to you sometimes too, letting you know it’s play time. But most of all Marigold prefers curling up on her fosterer’s lap…she’s definitely a lap cat!

Marigold is a sweet-natured and affectionate little puss, despite all she’s been through; that’s all behind her now.

We’d love to see Marigold adored and at the centre of her adopter’s world, lavished with love and fuss.

She’s lived with both cats and a dog, but seems to prefer to be the only pet in the household. Marigold is used to older, very gentle children who know to treat her kindly. She’s been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

Marigold is fully recovered from her operation and her little leg is getting stronger every day, but she may always walk with a slight limp. Thankfully this doesn’t seem to affect her day to to day activities and fun. Whoever adopts this sweet little flower will have a lifetime of love. Marigold is gorgeous.

Today is World Spay Day, a global day dedicated to promoting the importance of spaying and neutering pets as a way to control overpopulation and reduce the number of unwanted animals in rescues.

From around the age of 4 months, kittens reach sexual maturity and are therefore capable of breeding and producing kittens themselves.

Most people do not have the time or desire to breed from their cat and do not wish to add to the number of unwanted cats and kittens already looking for homes.

Neutering a cat not only prevents unwanted pregnancies occurring but also curbs unwanted behavioural patterns associated with sexual maturity and reduces the risk of certain diseases.

Reasons for neutering female cats

Population control. It is important to neuter a female cat before she can have kittens herself. This happens very quickly depending on breed, time of year born and individual development. The first season usually occurs around six months but can be earlier. Queens can have up to three litters in a year.

Control of nuisance. Female cats will ‘call’ (come into season and be receptive to the male cat) regularly, about every three weeks during sexually active times of the year if they do not get pregnant. Having entire female cats in an area will attract entire males with the attendant problems of spraying, fighting and caterwauling.

Welfare issues. Unwanted kittens may not be cared for and are likely to suffer from various infectious diseases such as cat ‘flu or worse. There are unlikely to be enough new homes available for them.

Health issues. Female cats which are not neutered are more likely to suffer from pyometra (infection of the womb) later in life and with mammary tumours. Queens with infectious diseases may pass these on to their kittens. Pregnancy and birth are also not without risk.

Wildlife issues. Cats with kittens will hunt more actively and if they are not being fed will need to catch more wildlife to feed their kittens.

Reasons for neutering male cats

Control of nuisance. Unneutered male cats are likely to stray over a large area, will mark their territory with a very pungent spray and are much more likely to fight – with attendant noise nuisance.

Health issues. Fighting males are much more likely to spread diseases such as FIV and FeLV to other cats. They are also likely to suffer from fight injuries such as abscesses. Because they wander over a large area they are also at greater risk of suffering road traffic accidents.

Pet issues. Unneutered male cats will wander from home and may not return. They may also spray inside the home and may be aggressive to their owners. Therefore it is desirable to neuter kittens early enough to ensure that the above problems are prevented. Most people do not want to live with an unneutered male cat.

Population control. Obviously, male cats do not have kittens themselves and it only takes one male in an area to make lots of female cats pregnant, so neutering a female cat makes a great deal more difference to limiting numbers, but it all helps!

Please get your cats neutered. All rescue centres are at full capacity, please do your bit to help us.

Pretty young puss Willow came to us when a family member developed allergies. She settled quickly and is such a sweetheart.

Willow is as lovely as her name. She’s playful and curious and fascinated by the world around her. Willow is such an unusual colour, she’s a tabby but with gorgeous amber highlights in her fur.

She’s now been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated and ready for the next chapter in her life. Willow lived with children so is used to family life, but hasn’t met dogs or lived with other cats before. Lovely Willow would suit a home where her owners will enjoy playing with her…and she loves a cuddle and a fuss. She’s a joyful little cat to be with.

Good luck finding your new home pretty Willow.

Our volunteers were out early this morning to assess and trap a small colony of ferals on Gower.

A mother cat and her four youngsters from last year were reported to us. We believe there are five in all.

We managed to catch three of the youngsters this morning 😀

The three we caught were all female. Obviously the original mother is female. We are not sure of the fifth

Assuming there are 4 females then they could have 6 kittens each in the next couple of months - that makes 29 cats by the spring !!! Then they could go on to have another litter in the summer - another 24 kittens.

YOU DO THE MATHS !!

Luckily this little colony was bought to our attention and we will make sure it is kept under control and will provide food for the feeders. They are a very much loved part of the small Gower Community

Loads of people in the area are feeding the cats and providing water, food and shelter so yet another potential disaster averted 😀

Ginny who has been renamed Bella recently found her new loving home

"Bella is brill, she's absolutely full of it and such a character. She likes to play a lot and every morning she likes to hide and then pounces. She goes into the cupboard to get her pouches and Dreamies. 😹 She enjoys being out in the garden."

A lovely result for this gorgeous girl 🥰

"We adopted Coco and Poppy (renamed Sid and Frankie) two weeks ago. They have settled in really well and are great friends. They play and chase together constantly and then curl up together in a chair for a rest. We love having them and they have made the house come alive. They are just starting to explore the outdoors - next stop will be cat flap training!"

Another pair of happy adopted cats ❤️

Easy like Sunday morning…

Sweetheart Momo can have a stretch and continue dozing on the window sill while she waits for a new loving home.

Little beauty Momo came to us when her owners could no longer care for her. Understandably she was a bit bewildered to begin with, but has got used to the idea of a new home and a lovely new life.

Good for you Momo! Young Momo is a petite cat who is so pretty…her fur is slightly fluffy, especially on her beautiful tail which she curls around over her paws. Momo loves to snuggle under blankets…so be careful where you sit! We think

Momo would suit being the only cat in the household and we understand she’s never lived with dogs. Momo would make a lovely companion to share a chilly evening, she’s a snuggly little cat who likes to be close to you.

Momo is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped…she’s good to go. We’d love to see Momo find her happy ever after, she deserves it.

Duchess went to her new home yesterday and hasn't taken long to settle in.
Her new slaves say-
"Duchess is slowly getting used to her new surroundings. She spent a lot of time cwtched up on the settee with us last night. Plenty of purrs and head rubbing - all a good sign"

You may remember just before Christmas 2023 Mary and her 3 kittens Noel, Angel and Gabriel were rescued from a shed by one of our volunteers. We have recently had an update on Noel who is now called Camillo-
"A year ago today, my wife and I adopted Noel, whom we renamed Camillo, from Swansea Cats and Kittens. I am writing to let you know that Camillo continues to do well and is a joy in our lives"

It's so lovely for us to have updates on the cats and kittens we home.

Gorgeous Ollie is such a joyful young puss, his fosterer says ‘he’s perfect’ and ‘he’s the best’ so who are we to argue?

Young Ollie came to us when his owner had to move to accommodation which didn’t allow cats and was very sad to let him go.

But Ollie has taken it in his stride and soon cheered up and settled nicely in his foster home.

Ollie was already neutered and chipped and is now vaccinated too…he’s good to go!

He’s a big lad for his age and will need a loving home where he’ll have plenty of opportunities to play and explore outside.

Ollie is a friendly boy and so should be fine with children who know to be gentle and who’ll enjoy playing with him…there’s lots of fun to be had! Ollie hasn’t lived with other cats or met dogs before, but he’s a chilled, young cat so may well settle in a home with other welcoming pets.

Good luck finding your forever home lovely boy.

You may remember last year Luna raised well over £1,000 for Swansea Cats and Kittens ♥️

Luna has set herself another challenge this year to help the cats and kittens in the Swansea and surrounding area

Luna is riding her bike 20 MILES to help the cats and kittens !!

Last year when Luna was 7 she rode her bike 12 miles !! Wow that is some distance but we have absolutely no doubt that she will reach her target

Thank you Luna for being so passionate about helping the cats in the area ♥️

‘My name is Luna and I am 8 years old. I really really love cats and kittens. 😻 Last year I did a 12 mile bike ride to raise money for Swansea Cats and Kittens.’

Stanley enjoying a Lick e Lick treat from one of our volunteers visiting him in his pen today. Probably the first treat he has ever had ♥️. He was so keen to get his paws on the treat he managed to get it all over his nose 😹

Gorgeous boy Stanley was found as a stray and once neutered and vet checked will soon be looking for a loving new home.
