How to clean your dog's teeth at home! 🪥

Brushing your dog's teeth regularly is a great way to keep their gums and teeth healthier and will fight gum disease. Introducing tooth brushing gradually will mean that your pet's will learn to enjoy the experience more!

What will you need?

• A toothbrush with medium bristles and the correct size:
Medium and large dogs - adult size
Small dogs - Child Size
Toy or miniature dogs - small special toothbrush
• Pet toothpaste
• A quiet place without distractions
• Most importantly Patience.

❗️A few top tips to help you get started: ❗️

• Keep each session short (start with a few seconds and build to a maximum of a couple of mins)
• Try to stick to the same time of day that suits your routine to brush their teeth
• Repeat each stage until your dog is comfortable with it and then continue for 5 separate days before moving onto the next stage.
• Every dog is different so train at a pace you're both comfortable with and give lots of praise / rewards but only for good behaviour.🐶

The 5 stages of brushing! 🪥🦷

1 - Introducing the pet toothpaste
2 - Getting them used to something in their mouth
3 - Introducing the toothbrush - canine teeth to begin with
4 - Brushing the teeth further back
5 - Brushing all the teeth.

February is Pet Dental Awareness Month! 🦷🪥

Dogs and Cats don't just use their teeth to eat. They're also essential tools, for carrying things, playing, tugging, chewing and living life to the full! Teeth are as important to dogs and cats as our hands are to us.

Dogs and cats have 2 sets of teeth in their life, in puppyhood, dogs have 28 baby teeth. In kittenhood cats have 26! 🦷

Their baby teeth begin to fall out when they are replaced with permanent adult teeth, which usually starts around 4 months of age. When the baby teeth are shed they are often swallowed by the pet, but you may notice them in their bedding or on the floor, which is perfectly normal! 😍

Adult dogs then have 42 teeth and Cats have 30 teeth, a healthy mouth depends on healthy teeth, so it is highly recommended that you have an appropriate regular oral care routine from an early age and get them checked regularly at the Vets, just like you would the Dentist! 🩺🦷

‼️ To bring more awareness to this we are doing a Discount on our Mouthwash called Plaqaid and our toothpaste for pets. These together normally cost £15.90 but we are offering10% off for the entire month so this bundle will only cost £13.50 ‼️

DID YOU KNOW......

we are an RCVS Accredited Practice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All RCVS-accredited practices have to meet Core standards, including hygiene, health and safety ,clinical governance and the facilities provided. On top of this ‘Core’ accreditation, General Practices can gain species- or discipline-specific accreditations, for example, small animals just like us!☺️

To maintain the accreditation, practices are inspected by RCVS Assessors every four years and there are random spot checks.

It can be hard for owners to know what happens behind the scenes at the vets. The Scheme makes
more information about practices available to help animal owners choose a practice. In particular, the
Scheme can reassure people about hygiene and facilities available at an individual practice.

Let's talk about Aural Haematoma's! 👂🏼

An aural haematoma is when blood vessels break and result in a pocket of blood and a very swollen ear!

These can be caused by excessive head shaking or scratching when something is irritating a dog's ear, for example:

- An infection ❌
- A wound ❌
- Material lodged in the ear canal ❌

Aural Haematoma's are treated by draining the pocket, surgically repairing the haematoma site and stabilising the ear o prevent further damage. In some cases they may also need draining tubes or bandaging.🩺

Tyson recently had an aural haematoma and he came in to have surgery on it, now he's at home with his family during his recovery process! ❤️
