Introducing Phoebe...

We have been quiet for a little while as we have some exciting news!

Phoebe is now staying with us! And we are super excited to see what we can achieve!

Phoebe is 4 years old and has been bounced around a little bit in this time, luckily she found her way to who has done an incredible job with her and really set her up to be a really great dog! She is now with us and we are incredibly grateful to Kate for trusting us to give Pheebs a good home!

She has already been an excellent family dog which is one of my biggest priorities, she has been fantastic with Gus which has made the transition even easier for her and us.

I am very excited to dive in and see what we can achieve together!

Big happy 3rd birthday to the boy Gus (aka Gustopher)

I will never not be grateful for him and what our journey has become.

The best dog for our family and amazing with my kids

The best stooge dog, from where he used to be to how neutral he now is and how he reads other dogs will always amaze me!

Happy birthday my boy, looking forward to seeing where we go in the future!

We are now finished for the year!!

Big thank you to all the people I have been lucky enough to meet, learn from and train with!

It has been an incredible year with lots of new friendships made and a whole lot of learning that's been done. The mentorship I completed with and was one of the best decisions I've made so far so thank you guys for everything and the continued support!

A big shout-out to Nick and Yas and Ben who have become some very close friends since we started up and have always been there for the highs and lows. It's always nice to have like minded people to be able to talk to about anything

It goes without saying but a massive thank you to my family, without their guidance, support and encouragement none of this would be possible!

Also a big thank you to all my clients who have trusted the process and put the work in and seen some amazing results with their dogs, nothing makes me happier than seeing people finally able to enjoy life with their dogs again after having issues that have affected day to day life!

I am very much looking forward to 2024 and have some exciting things in the works with some great people so watch this space...

Part of the British Veterinary Association - BVA 2024 political manifesto ….

Question:
How much first-hand terrible damage have the BVA vets seen due to responsible e-collar use for sheep avoidance conditioning to ensure that dogs are kept FULLY under control around livestock?

Answer: None.

The same e-collars the BVA lobby government to see blanket-banned, despite a weight of scientific evidence supporting their unique, life-protecting capabilities and the voice of the national sheep farming body warning strongly against doing so - “An animal welfare disaster” (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/09/03/electric-dog-collar-ban-will-lead-animal-welfare-disaster-warns/)

Or perhaps there is a body of robust, longitudinal scientific research to equate a lead with adequate and appropriate control that the world is unaware of?

Nope.

The juxtaposition that is the BVA political position on e-collars and livestock worrying can be summarised with a simple analogy..

‘We want to reduce the number of child and road-user fatalities in road traffic incidents … And … We want to see a total ban on vehicle horns or the yell of a parent, which can startle children to deter them from stepping out into moving traffic, by virtue of the fact that both are potentially psychologically unpleasant.
Instead, we recommend never allowing a child leave the home unaccompanied and never letting go of their hand throughout their entire lifetime’.

It really IS that irrational ..

It's that time of year again...

Many shops and supermarkets have stocked up on festive rawhide treats and stockings. THESE SHOULD NOT BE FED TO YOUR DOG.

Many of us are confused and outraged that these are still being made and sold. However, there are lots of dog owners out there who may not be aware of the dangers of rawhide- we need to do our best to educate them.

✋ Rawhide production is generally far from what you would call 'natural'. In many cases, the final product has been subjected to all sorts of potentially harmful chemicals, such as bleach or hydrogen peroxide
✋If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, they can get stuck in the esophagus or lower in the digestive tract. In some cases, rawhide obstructions require emergency abdominal surgery to remove the blockage and if it doesn't come in time, dogs can die.

Building trust...

Some dogs are more nervous than others and need more time and a slower approach and that is absolutely okay.

Some dogs are super keen to work or play straight away which is great but for a lot of dogs these things can be quite a challenge.

We don't get to choose what a dog deems as aversive or scary that's on an individual basis, what one dog loves another may be very unsure of.

Does this mean that we have to wrap our nervous dogs up in bubble wrap and avoid all the things that they may find scary? Absolutely not!

Yes we may take a slower approach but we will build the dogs trust in us and build their confidence with the scary things to help them overcome this and show them that there is nothing to be afraid of.

We want to build up enough trust in our dogs that they look to us in these moments to help guide them through them and not shy away from these challenges.

Dogs are way more resilient than a lot of people give them credit for and we need to start appreciating that and using it to help dogs overcome their fears to allow them to experience so much more rather than sheltering them away from this.

Don't rush the process...

So often people will rush their training, the reasons for this might be having too high expectations initially or seeing things on social media and wishing your dog could do that or just simply laziness.

Training your dog is hard work and it takes countless hours and repetitions to allow your dog to understand that these things are the new norm

Now there are ways to speed up some elements of this and by seeking out a good trainer, they can point you in the right direction but it will still require hard work.

You need to be willing to put the work in at home with your dog if you want to see real change, these things don't happen after 5 or 6 reps.

The same way you wouldn't be able to go to the gym a couple times and expect to look completely different, these things take time, practice and effort.

Take the time to build a relationship with your dog and if you can see that your dog isn't quite getting something, slow it down and go back a few steps and start again

Big thank you to for getting these shots!

Foundations...

What are foundations in dog training?

Foundations are the basic understanding of the fundamental commands such as sit, stay, down, recall and a loose lead walk as well as a good understanding of your basic marker words.

All of my sessions will start with making sure the dog has a good understanding of the foundations so that there is no confusion or conflict when we ask the dog to perform a simple command.

This also gives a dog the opportunity to understand that even in a situation they may feel unsure in that when we ask them for one of the basic commands, they know how to complete the task and bring the focus and engagement back to you rather than what was making them unsure in the first place.

Having good foundations gives you something to be able to fall back on and use to your advantage at any point in your training and it should be something that every dog owner does with their dog as the bare minimum

Get out there and really nail these foundations with your dog and you will see how beneficial it is!

If you are struggling with these foundations then please reach out to a good trainer that can assist you in your journey and help clarify things for you and your dog!

Huge welcome to Sam (great name if I do say so myself) who joined us with her owner for some reactivity issues and to sharpen up some of the loose lead walking

Sam's owner is spot on with everything he does with her and works really hard on building fantastic obedience as well as a really beautiful relationship

We really just tweaked a few things here and there and provided a bit more clarity between Sam and her owner and some little bits to put into practice at home and they were flying

Sam is a super driven dog and loves to work and play with her owner as much as physically possible which makes training an absolute joy!

Really looking forward to seeing how these guys get on after some practice!
