Having been in business for over 50 years, The Water Garden was one of the first aquatic retailers in the whole of Wiltshire. We are a family run business with over 100 years of combined knowledge, versed in both old school and modern fish keeping techniques. Hi Everyone.
So.. all this hot weather we are getting at the moment.
The main thing to do is not to panic when looking at the rising temperature of your fish tank. Remember that fish can take quite high temperatures before they start to struggle, as the temperature rises slowly in the water the fish will adjust to their new environment.
Saying that there are a few things you can do to help.
Keep the room where the tank is situated cool, blinds or curtains shut windows open.
Keep the lid of the tank open. This will allow hot air between the lights and the water to vent off.
Slow right down on the food. Urine from the fish will increase the bacterial load on the tank which will in turn de-oxygenate the water.
Lights off over the tank. If you've got live plants they can take up to 4-5 hours of light a day.
Air pumps are a life saver!!!
Make the outlet of your filter splash on the water surface.

Big things not to do.
Don't turn off the heater. It's thermostatic it's not working anyway.
Don't do big water changes with colder water. Temperature fluctuation will stress your fish.
Don't add frozen bottled water. Again, temperatures will drop and then come straight back up again. Waste of time!!!.

RED ALERT! All pond enthusiasts, this years weather has amounted in an uprising in pests/bugs targeting your precious & !

Be on the look our for leaves with mottled brown marks (see the pictures below), this is the cause of Water Aphids and Waterlily Leaf Beetles. These pesky blighters will sit on your lily pads and gauge themselves full if left unchallenged!

"How does one rid themselves of these pests?", I hear you murmuring. The most efficient way to rid these bugs is manual removal, using techniques such as brushing the bugs off, spraying them off with water hoses and 'pinching'/removing the infected leaves!

This marginal plant brings a stunning splash of deep maroon to your ponds, these typically flower a vibrant red between August - October.

🌿Oxygenating Plants🌿

Native oxygenating plants are essential for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems in any sized pond. They include species such as water crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis), hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), spiked water milfoil (Myriophyllum specatum) and Curley pond w**d (Potamogeton crispus). Nannacara anomala, also known as the Golden Eye Cichlid, which is due to the Male having a very golden eye! In the two photo's the first is the female, the second is the male with it's iconic golden eye.

A small peaceful cichlid reaching sizes of around 7cm, best kept individually or in pairs, we have a nice selection of these in store right now!

Ghost Koi are a cross between Mirror or Common Carp and Koi Carp. They are hardier than Koi and can be fast growing.

These Koi grow large and, although they are very hardy, they are also very messy and will easily uproot plants as they get bigger. They will also eat a lot and produce a lot of waste so water quality is parramount!

As with any Koi, large filtered ponds are a must for long term health.

Green Tench are a large bottom dwelling pond fish (70cm). In the wild you would typically find tench in slow moving bodies of water, with lots of plant life. They are great 'clean-up' crew for your ponds and are partial to eating various aquatic invertbrates - however as with any scavenging/bottom dwelling fish, you still need to ensure that they are getting plenty of food.
