It's extremely warm at the moment as you have probably experienced, and as we head into the even warmer months, it's time to talk about ways we can keep our dogs safe and comfortable:
π Provide Ample Shade: Create a cool space in your garden or home with a shaded area, whether it's under a tree, a canopy, or an umbrella. This gives your dog a cozy spot to retreat from the sun.
π§ Offer Plenty of Fresh Water: Keep your dog hydrated by ensuring a constant supply of cool, freshwater. Check and refill their water bowl frequently, and consider using a larger bowl to minimise the risk of running out.
π« Avoid Hot Pavements: Protect your dog's sensitive paw pads from getting burned by hot pavements. Opt for walks during cooler times of the day, and evaluate whether your dog really needs a walk when it is really hot.
βοΈ Use Cooling Products: Help your dog beat the heat with specialized cooling products. Cooling mats, bandanas, or vests made with cooling materials can aid in regulating their body temperature and provide much-needed relief.
π« Avoid Wet Towels: Although it may seem intuitive to drape a wet towel over your dog, it can actually hinder heat dissipation and cause overheating. Instead, opt for other cooling methods like shade, cooling products, or encouraging your dog to lie on cool surfaces like tiled floors.
β³ Don't Rush Grooming: Avoid hastily booking grooming appointments solely to have your dog shaved. Their coat serves as a natural insulator, protecting them from the sun's rays and regulating their body temperature. Consult your groomer to determine the best grooming approach that maintains their coat's protective qualities.
βοΈ Use Dog-Friendly Sun Cream: Dogs with light or white fur, or those with exposed skin areas, are susceptible to sunburn and skin damage. Apply dog-friendly sun cream to protect these vulnerable areas, such as the nose, ears, belly, and groin, and be sure to use products specifically formulated for dogs to avoid any harmful ingredients.
