This is a horse that I have been working with for a number of years. Between the owner, the physiotherapist, and myself, it was noted that she felt tight through the hips, which was causing her land on the outside of her hind hooves first. To help combat this, I used a lateral extension on the hind shoes to alter the axial swing of the limb and prevent it from travelling as far beneath her. Working together with the physio, having regular treatments, the horse has built up correct muscle and become more supple, thus working better behind and feeling much better in herself 🐴

This thoroughbred was presented to me recently, displaying a mild lameness in front. Veterinary xrays showed a slight derotation of the pedal bones and some arthritic changes. The horse was also hampered by two complicated cracks in the nearside fore. To help with the derotation, a Jim Blurton aluminium heartbar shoe was applied, with a rolled toe to ease breakover and help transfer weight to the horses frog. A raised heel pad was then used to help combat the derotation of the pedal bone. In addition, dental impression material was used to ease concussion and protect the thin soles. Once shod, the hoof cracks were thoroughly cleaned and debrided, and a hoof cast applied to strengthen the hoof wall, further prevent dirt ingress and avoid shoe loss in this wet and windy weather! He is now feeling much more comfortable, and improvements are already seen, and will continue to do so with a maintained remedial hoof care routine. 👍🐴

To all my clients;

💥Coronavirus/Covid-19 Protocols💥

As we are now under new government measures, I will continuing to work in the respect of animal welfare but will be applying the following:

⭐️ I am more than happy to help myself to a horse that has been left in their stable. If they require you to be present, social distancing MUST be adhered to at ALL times.

⭐️ I have hand sanitizer in the van, which I will use after and before touching any gates, taps etc.

⭐️ I will be thoroughly washing my hands at every appointment. Please show me where the taps are!

⭐️ Please no cups of tea or coffee (😭) for the foreseeable future, I will bring my own.

⭐️ At this time bacs payment is ideal as there no cross contamination. Cash to be placed in an envelope and placed in the van or in a designated location if you are not present.

⭐️ If you feel unwell or those you live with feel unwell, don’t risk it I’m happy to work on my own where possible or I can work with any nominated person. I have family at home too!!

⭐️ If I start to feel unwell or members of my family feel unwell, I will arrange cover during any period of self isolation. Consequently, if any of my local colleagues have to self isolate I am happy to provide cover where possible. We have a great network of farriers in the area and we will work together.

There can be no indication of how long this situation will last. It could be 1 week, 2 weeks or 6 months. The sooner it passes, the sooner we can get back to doing the things we love.

Finally, if any advice is required from my clients regarding hoof care during this time feel free to contact me any time.

Please share

Many thanks and stay safe!

Luke.

This is a horse who I have recently met, who had recieved diagnosis of navicular changes and arthritis in the distal interfalangeal joint. This horse suffers from thin soles and low, weak heels which have been crushed over a period of time. The horse had been on heart bar shoes to transfer some of the weight to the frog and copper sulfate sole pack had been applied to protect the thin soles; however the weather and poor ground conditions were causing a bacterial issue. To rectify this, I applied Stromsholm Razor Horse Pro Pads which are shock absorbing and provide a supportive but natural barefoot feel to the horse. Under these pads I used Magic Cushion hoof packing to fill the void between the sole and the pad, and to help kill bacteria and keep the area clean as well as reduce swelling, soreness and heat in the hoof. Finally, I used 3/4 fullered, quarter clipped shoes with a rolled toe to help ease break over. The result was a happy horse, who I will hopefully be able to help keep sound and riding, pain and bacteria free!

Nice to be back into the full swing of things. It has been a busy start to 2020, so please be aware I might not reply to messages immediately, however I will do as soon as I can! If your enquiry is urgent, please call and leave a message :) A lovely start to the year has been a kind gift from Nantwich Vets who I have worked alongside during 2019. However, in true 'take the good with the bad' spirit, I came home to a parking fine on the same day . I suppose that's what you get when you try to take full advantage of Derbyshire council 😁😉 I look forward to seeing you all soon!

🤧🤧ATTENTION TO ALL CLIENTS🤧🤧

With the current equine flu crisis, please be honest with me if you suspect any of your horses, or other horses on the yard are showing signs off illness.
It is no problem to cancel your appointment and i will prioritise your rebooking.
I would like to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. I will be using virkon to disinfect my tools, chaps and boots between yards, to help me do this please make sure that your horses are free from mud and I've got a clean working area to save me time and keep appointments running on schedule.
Thank you

This is a recent client, who I have attended a few times previously. An x-ray showed that the hind feet had a reverse rotation of the pedal bone. To help combat this, I shortened the toes, and applied wedge pads with frog supports. Following my visit, the horse had repeat xrays, which showed improvement. The biggest problem I faced with this horse was that wintery, muddy ground conditions made the pads slip and slightly move the shoes. I changed the horse to a 3 clipped shoe to help secure the shoe further thus ensuring the wedge stayed firmly in place, and our customers horse remained comfortable.Going forward, I hope to remove the pads and have the horses heels to grow down to replicate the job the pads were doing, removing the need for the wedge.

This horse was recently referred to me suffering with severe Laminitis, causing a rotation of the pedal bone. When I examined the horse initially, he was displaying a high level of discomfort and lameness in front. The x-ray confirmed that the best approach for this horse was imprint shoes, as traditional nail on shoes would create further trauma to the hoof capsule. Prior to applying the shoe, the hoof must be clean and dry. I lowered the heels and shortened to toe to help correct the position of the bone in the foot as well as the medial lateral balance. The shoes were applied by heating them in warm water until malleable, and then shaped to the foot. Once presented to the foot, I then glued and folded the cuffs of the shoes around the hoof. It is then set hard using 'Shoe Freeze', which is an extremely cold spray, hardening the shoe, fixing it in place. These shoes are a great aid for horses suffering with Laminitis as they are light and easy to apply, without causing further issues and using a non invasive method. Standard cycles on these will be 6 weeks, in which time I expect the horse to make good progress and I will then reassess the horse.

Here is one of my recent clients, a pony suffering from lamintis, which had caused a 2mm rotation of the pedal bones in the fore feet. Corrective trimming and a shortening of the toe has allowed me to position the pedal bone correctly, and applying aluminium heart bars has supported the foot, relieving pressure whilst keeping the shoe light and comfortable. This pony has already seen a marked improvement and I can only expect it to continue with this.
