From the RWAF
Very important news, the vaccine we’ve been waiting for to protect your rabbits against the highly virulent strain of RVHD is going to be available for your vet to order from 9th December. Discuss with your vet what your new vaccination protocol needs to be. Any vet wanting to find out more can join our RWAF Veterinary Professionals Group on Facebook.

Ive spoken to companion care and they have no idea of this new vaccine and wont be getting it in any time soon.

Could I ask everyone on here to call their vets over the next few days and to post here with what they say, so we can get a sense of which vets know about this K5 varient and its vaccine being available in this country as of the 9th

The practice manager at companion care is away for 2 weeks so i will be emailing him today for more info on this.

HI all. I've just had a question about the thermal door curtains we used last year and well for a few years now, they are great at keeping extra warmth in the house and keep the cold out, esp on back doors, but they also let you buns/ pets thru.
We just usually bull dog clip a corner up in the middle and ty and mal eventually learn to just bull dose thru the magnet clips when they want to come in or go out, so we can keep it fully closed.

Keeps the living room toasty even without the heating on.
We buy the ones speficially with the clear bit so we dont scare the pants of each other if we both try to go thru at the same. It has happened!

here they are

In light of recent comments online, it is clear that some of you have lost rabbits to RVHD2, some of which may be from the new, highly virulent strain. As this means that the current vaccine has not offered protection, reporting it will assist the regulatory authorities in allowing in vaccines that....

In light of the new RVHDv2k varient we have seen more posts today from the RWAF on this subject. no change from yesterday really, but the K5 varient has been known of for some time.

We will change our policy a little, as humans and shoes and items will be the main source of spread here:

We will be doing door stop hand overs only for arrival and collections and no viewings before bookings unless its via our camera service. This will hopefully be a significant risk factor gone moving forwards.
No toys, blankets or the usual bowls bottles or toilets. We have everything here including toys, boxes and packing paper so your bun will not be without play things. You can bring BRAND NEW toys still sealed thats fine.
Food remains the same, please bring a small tub or baggie of food with their name on.
Carriers - For the most part please give your carriers a good spray and wiping down before you put your buns in, so we only have clean carriers here. Not easy because they can stress wee on the way, but a clean plastic carrier would be prefered.

We will be stepping up our bio-security even more, with anigene sprays eveyrwhere so i can spray my bunny boots inbetween cottages more (each cottage will have its own spreay bottle, whilst anigene is not proven against K5 its is proven agaist RVHDv2 and other visues of the same ilk (non-enveloping viruses).
I already have back garden boots and separate upstairs boots so i dont x-contaminate upstairs and downstairs as well as having my own bunnies to worry about.

If ppl are interested in buying some ready made anti-viral disifectant i would be open to selling 1ltr bottles (ready to use, no need to mix) for those that want it. its much stronger than supermarket bought and is an anti-fungal, bactieride and virucide, as well as a surfactant, so good for cleaning too! I use it everywhere already and its much more user freindly than the Fam30 i use in our mega bath for cleaning bowls, bottles, toilets, dustpans and brushes, toys and everything else plastic we use.
If we get interest ill cost it up. Maybe do a refill service where you rent the ltr spray and then just bring it to refill when needed.

I hope the assures you all that we will be taking this as seriously as we did the v2 beak out a few years ago. I will be incontact with the local vets in the coming weeks and months to inform them , as most of the time they have no idea, and will badger them to get stocks in when they first become available.
I now know what the new vaccine is called so ill be on the ball trying to get info to you in the coming weeks and months.

Hoppy bunnies all and dont worry for now.
Be careful with shoes you wear ourside, be extra vigulent with cleaning anything you give your bunnies ebfore hand and think vectors into your house and risk acess them. its all we can do for now.

RVHD2 update

We are aware that there is, sadly, yet another strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic disease out there: “virulent” or “highly virulent” RVHD2. It’s been detected in Hungary, France, Northern Italy and the Netherlands, where it makes up approximately 50% of the cases seen (the other 50% being "classical" RVHD2). As yet, we can’t be sure of its presence in the UK, as no work has been done to look for it. We are in the process of finding out if it is possible to do any surveillance for it, but we know from past experience with previous strains, that it is only a matter of time before it gets here, if it’s not here already.

The good news is that there is a new vaccine which covers both it and the "classical" RVHD2 strain, but not RVHD1, nor myxomatosis. The bad news is that we don't expect this to be available in the UK until early next year. Because of the restriction placed on us by the Veterinary Medicine Directorate we are not able to provide the names of any vaccinations to rabbit guardians and care givers, only to clinicians such as vets. However, we are communicating this to them also so you should contact your vet for advice.

We hope to be able to give more news nearer the time of its release, including suggested vaccine regimes, for vets and for owners. Until then, please do not stop vaccinating with the currently available vaccine, as this offers the fullest possible protection available right now, , and please continue to take sensible precautions to avoid bringing it into your rabbit's environment (eg by changing outdoor footwear at the door, and being careful to forage in places with, ideally, no wild rabbits present).

If you are adding any new rabbits to your household (or if you run a rescue) then we advise quarantining any new additions for 2 weeks.

Review from Janet.
Many thanks to you both for looking after Bunny so well for us when we were away on our two recent holidays .
Bun clearly loves staying in her holiday cottage, and it was reassuring to see her happy, and enjoying her time there with you .
Tracey is very knowledgeable about the welfare of rabbits and offers a Great holiday homing service. Thank you.
