Can cold water swimming be detrimental to your dog's rehabilitation? 💦
The short answer is yes it can be!
So many dogs love a dip in the canal, sea, lake, but at this time of the year, the temperature will still be below 12 degrees 🥶. This can negatively impact your dog’s rehabilitation.
When the body goes into cold water, the blood vessels constrict and the heart beats faster 💗; this increases blood pressure but blood flow slows. Without the required oxygen the muscles fatigue and swimming becomes increasingly difficult.
The lack of oxygen also hampers recovery and increases risk of further injury.
In a hydrotherapy session the water is heated between 28-32 degrees Celsius 🌡️
The warmth of the water opens the blood vessels, increasing oxygen circulation, slowing fatigue as well as aiding the muscle recovery process.
The warm water also helps reduce inflammation around the joint, helping it to move more freely and decreasing pain.
In addition, at a hydrotherapy centre your four-legged friend is being monitored for signs of fatigue and resting them between sets, to get the most out of the session.
Hydrotherapy helps accelerate the recovery process and return your dog to full function. Swimming in cold water can slow this down or even set it back.

A little progress update… doing so well to keep on track 🙌🏼 🐶 the fun stuff coming soon 🫶🏻
The number one question… What is hydrotherapy
💧 canine hydrotherapy is available in two formats, either swimming pool or underwater treadmill. We will offer the treadmill.
💧 hydrotherapy is known as a complimentary therapy and/or alternative exercise
💧 Hydrotherapy is a popular choice for rehabilitation following injury or surgery, or for dogs with chronic conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia or arthritis.
💧 It is a water-based therapy that uses key properties of water to support the dog’s weight, which in turn reduces pressure on joints and encourages an increased range of movement.
🌟 Great for….
Relief of pain, swelling & stiffness
Muscle strengthening and maintenance
Alleviating muscle spasm
Increased range of motion in joints
Improved circulation
Cardiovascular fitness (heart & lungs)
Increased tissue healing
Increased speed of recovery
Gait modification
Increased proprioception
I will keep posting information on our services but if you have any questions please feel free to ask 🐾
