This is becoming a welfare issue!

Im tired of hearing “the vet says there is no pain” by a guardian after they have taken their dog to the vet. It leaves me deflated and frustrated and feeling so sorry for the dog.

Myth Bust:

PAIN CANNOT BE RULED OUT IN ANY ANIMAL (dog, cat, horse or hamster), by anyone!

* A quick palpation - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

WHY?

The dog may shut down due to environmental factors or dislike of a strange human touching them, they keep still to get it over with ASAP!

The dog may be over aroused or overwhelmed by the clinical environment (excited/scared etc) to the point that adrenaline is so high it blocks pain!

* Blood Tests - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

There is currently NO blood test that can detect pain.

* Diagnostic imaging - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

Yes they can pick up a variety of conditions, but even the GOLD standard MRI doesn’t pick up everything, but NONE of them can detect PAIN.

Just because a source cannot be found doesn’t mean there is no pain.

PAIN is subjective, it is whatever that being (human or animal) perceives it to be!

Pain can come in many different forms, it is extremely complex, and can effect the individual in many different ways. A dog may get injured, the injury may have healed, but the pain remains … this is known as maladaptive pain.

Behaviour can be a HUGE indicator for PAIN:

* There could be a change of behaviour that has been directly caused by PAIN.

* There could be a worsening of behaviour due to an increase or new presence of PAIN.

* There could be a lack of “normal” behaviour due to PAIN.

* There could be behaviours that are present but that the guardian/owner don’t deem to be problematic that are indicators of PAIN.

* The dog may have ALWAYS displayed behaviours that are indicators of PAIN, but they have been ignored and put down to “just the way they are”.

* There may be NO problematic behaviours at all …. And the dog might still be in PAIN!

* The dog might be energetic, always on the go … and still be in PAIN.

* The dog might be lazy … and still be in PAIN.

* The dog may zoom up and down stairs … and still be in PAIN.

Diagnosing PAIN is not simple and can be difficult to get on top of.

A PAIN relief trail can be great! But often only one type of analgesic is tried and sometimes this doesn’t get results leading to the ASSUMPTION that there is no PAIN!

Here’s why:

* The drug was only trialed for 2 weeks - when living with chronic pain it can take longer to relieve. 2 weeks is not enough.

* The drug used wasn’t targeted to the type of pain the animal is feeling; soft tissue, bone, nerve or a combination of all.

It might take a number of different medications or a combination OVER TIME to see a difference.

ALWAYS keep in mind, NO ONE can rule out another being’s PAIN.

NO ONE. Not me. Not you. Not a Doctor. Not a Vet.

Let sleeping dogs lie!

Veterinary Centres of America (VCA) (2021), estimates that, "60% of dog bites in children occur when the child wakes or attempts to wake a sleeping dog". In the UK, 75% of dog bites involve children, with a bite to the face or head. So clearly this demonstrates that any family dog can bite due to startle reflex, and that children are the most common victims. Simply touching the sleeping dog, talking near their face or kissing them on their head can be enough to startle a sleeping dog.

We would all love to believe that our dog would never bite us, our children or anyone else. Unfortunately, studies show that most bites are inflicted by their own family dog or a dog they know. You probably can't fathom your gentle dog biting you or your family. It would be completely out of character for them, but sadly this is often what families say after their dog has seriously bitten them or a family member, and its seen time and time again.

It is so unfair to euthanise dogs for startle reflex, when this behaviour is not a conscious choice. Regardless of whether your dog has startle reflex, make sure you always provide:

-Separate sleeping area that children cannot access, such as a bed behind a pen.

- Use safeguards, such as a barriers and child gates to keep your dog and children separate when you cannot 'actively' supervise their interactions.

-Prevent children playing on the floor and near a resting/sleeping dog.

- Always have a barrier between your dog and your baby/toddler when your baby/toddler is playing/crawling on the floor.

-Teach your children to never disturb the dog when they are resting.

- Train your dog to rest/sleep in a designated area, rather than the sofa.

The startle reflex is your dog's body and brain bracing them for potential danger. So by letting them sleep, you may very well save their life, and that of your child's. - Holly Leake

I went to visit my grandad, he is in his 80's.

He is suffering with various physical ailments bless his heart.

He was always an active man in his youth, the ability to do things for himself has reduced and mentally it impacts him.

He is on various tablets for the pain, but today, I decided to stop his tablets because he is just old.

We went to go out for a walk but he is slow, it's a pace that I find a bit frustrating being honest, so I take his hand and apply a bit of gentle pressure to pull him along a bit faster.

He struggled badly to get out of bed, a handrail would help him but I dont like the look of it on the wall, they don't exactly make the room look as nice.

I know he struggles but he is just old......

So many dogs go through this EVERY DAY.

Dragged along for walks they have " always" done instead of being walked at a slower pace or shorter distance.

Dogs not receiving the pain medication and professional support such as physio, myotherapy, chiropractic support because hey they are just old.

Dogs trying to get up and walk on slippy floors because rugs don't suit the room, or it's hassle washing them.

It's not OK to do nothing and write things off as " just old age".

Old age is not an excuse for allowing a dog to struggle and be in pain. Old age is not an excuse to not bother making adaptions and changes to our own expectations.

Having a dog of old age is a privilege, an absolute privilege, and we should cherish, adapt, support, and want to do AS MUCH AS WE CAN to make their golden years the best we possibly can.

Just like I hope most humans would do all they could to help their parents and grandparents feel comfortable in thier latter years and have as much support as possible , our dogs deserve the same thoughts and considerations.
