🔷 Rabbits and small furries are NOT toys, please refrain from buying them as gifts this Christmas.
Exotic pets have specialist needs and care requirements, they are not to be taken on without extensive research and knowledge.

We love Christmas, but what we don’t love is rabbits being given as a Christmas gift. Rabbits are not just for Christmas, they are pets that deserve our care and commitment for many years 🐰🎁🙅

Contrary to popular belief, rabbits do not make good first-time pets for children and are not a good Christmas present idea. Rabbits are a 10-year commitment and can equate to over £11,000 over their lifetime!

This is one of the reasons why so many rabbits are abandoned every year, and UK rescue centres are facing a huge crisis - the worst ever.

Rabbits are living, breathing animals, not objects or playthings. Don’t add to the current welfare crisis, please think twice about giving rabbits as Christmas presents.

🔷 Struvite crystals seen under the microscope in a rat urine sample, they look like beautiful winter snow flakes! ❄️

Struvite crystals like this form when the urine becomes more alkaline, often because of bacteria altering the pH of the urine during a urinary tract infection (UTI).
A combination of Magnesium ammonium phosphate and Calcium apatite chemicals, these crystals grow rapidly and can aggregate and form stones causing a blockage in the urinary tract.
Here at PALS, when processing urine profiles, we examine the urine sediment under the microscope to find and identify crystals such as these in small amounts at the early stages of UTI. Together with bacterial cultures and sensitivity we enable swift diagnosis so that veterinary professionals can initiate early treatment with the most appropriate antibiotic.

🔷 NEWS UPDATE.
We are aware that there is another strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic disease (RHVD) called “virulent” or “highly virulent” RVHD2.
It has been detected in Hungary, France, Northern Italy and the Netherlands, where it makes up approximately 50% of the cases seen (the remaining 50% being “classical” RVHD2). The Rabbit Welfare Association (RWAF) and experts studying the new strain cannot be sure of its presence in the UK, but know from past experience with previous strains, that it is only a matter of time before it arrives in the UK, if it’s not here already.

Here at PALS our PCR test detects both RHDV-1 and RHDV-2, including the virulent strain of RHDV-2. However, it cannot differentiate between RHDV-2 and its virulent strain. Therefore, the PCR result will indicate RHDV-2 positive.

Please contact the laboratory for further information, sample requirements and pricing.

For further information regarding vaccination for RHVD, please contact your exotic veterinarian.

🥶 ❄️ Extremes of temperature outside are often a source of worry for rabbit owners. Whilst we need to take extra care to make sure our outdoor rabbits are protected from the cold weather, rabbits in suitable housing will cope well. They have grown their winter coats ready for the chilly days and nights and generally speaking do better than we do! ❄️ 🥶

There are some simple adjustments that can be made to make sure your bunnies are kept warm.

❄️ Exposed outside areas/mesh can be covered with tarpaulin to keep out any draughts, wet and cold.

🥶 Extra bedding and hay can be used and straw is good for extra insulation and trapping the warmth/heat.

💦 Ensure that your rabbits’ water is changed regularly and has not frozen throughout the day and especially in the evening/last thing at night.

🔥 We recommend snuggle safe pads as a good and safe way to help to keep your rabbits warm during the freezing temperatures.

🛏️ Rabbits should have their usual access to their sleeping areas, hides and exercise area. Extra hides in their outside spaces can be used for warmth, filled with straw and hay they will provide warm spaces.

❄️ Outdoor bunnies should not be brought inside during cold weather. Extreme changes in temperature for their little furry bodies is not good and can affect their ability to adapt when put back outside.

🔷 A great read from our PALS Blog 📖 'What defines an Exotic Veterinary Laboratory'

As a Leading UK Exotics Laboratory we receive many questions relating to exotic animals, sampling guidelines and our range of veterinary diagnostic tests. Our in-depth blog explores these topics, giving a clear insight into what defines an Exotic Laboratory.

By definition, an exotic veterinary laboratory is a laboratory that receives specimens from a range of species, from exotic or more unusual pets, to zoo, rare farm species or wild animals. These specimens could be from animals that weigh several hundred kilograms, to less than a hundred grams! Speci...
